We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

We know, it’s really scary to actually be on the wheel for the first time, but let’s face it, we’ve all been there.

You grip the steering wheel, heart racing, hoping you don’t make a mistake. Finding the right driving school can make all the difference.

So, you want a place that’s not just about passing the test but about feeling confident and safe on the road. So, let’s get right into the best driving schools in Auckland that will get us both from zero to hero in no time.

How much does it cost to enrol in a driving school in Auckland?

To enrol in some of the best Auckland driving schools, you can expect to pay around $70 to $90 per hour for individual driving lessons. Some driving schools offer package deals, which can drive down the costs slightly. Other costs to consider include whether you are using an automatic or manual vehicle and hiring a vehicle for a driving test.

How We Chose

Accreditation and Certification: We ensured each driving school is certified by reputable organisations like the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), guaranteeing adherence to high safety and instructional standards.
Instructor Expertise: We evaluated the experience and qualifications of instructors. Schools with certified, patient, and knowledgeable instructors who can handle diverse learning needs were rated higher.
Training Methods: We prioritised schools that use modern vehicles with dual controls and emphasise practical driving experience. Schools offering defensive driving courses and customised lesson plans scored higher.
Client Reviews: We considered feedback from past students. Driving schools with high pass rates, positive testimonials, and success stories reflecting significant improvement in driving skills were given top marks.
Facilities and Resources: We assessed the quality of training environments, including the availability of well-maintained vehicles, online resources, and additional support services like mock tests and flexible scheduling options.

From what we’ve seen, Trinity Driving School is an excellent choice for both new and experienced drivers seeking comprehensive and personalised driving education.

They offer a wide range of courses, from basic driving skills to advanced defensive driving techniques. With these, every kind of driver can receive a well-rounded education.

The instructors at Trinity are not only highly experienced but also excellent at customising their teaching methods to match individual learning styles. We like how this can boost the student’s confidence and competence behind the wheel.

We also noted that Trinity provides a supportive and relaxed learning environment. The students we spoke with appreciated this, stating that this aspect makes learning to drive far less intimidating.

The school also incorporates real-world scenarios in their training sessions, effectively preparing students for various driving conditions.

While their services are all pretty great, there are still a few drawbacks that we have to address. For instance, their lessons do cost a lot compared to other competitors and are only limited to a six-day class session.

Pros

  • Comprehensive range of courses
  • Experienced and adaptive instructors
  • Supportive and stress-free learning environment

Cons

  • Higher lesson costs
  • Limited weekend availability

Instructors like no other

Sam is a very good instructor. He is very positive, gives motivation and confidence.  Provides right coaching.  I tried many driving instructors but everyone were working for money trying to increase number of lessons by lowering the confidence but Sam is the only person who actually helped with correct training and  techniques.

Patient and Understanding

Sam was amazing. He put in alot of effort into each lesson, and made my son feel comfortable. He is really patient

and explained every step in a manner that a learner driver would understand. My son enjoyed the lessons with him, and he became a very confident driver.

He was able to pass his restricted the first time, and I truly believe it is all thanks to Sam.

Alert Driving School is a top choice for anyone looking to master the road in Auckland. We found their range of courses extremely beneficial—from basic driving skills to advanced defensive driving and overseas licence conversions.

We appreciate that the instructors at Alert are NZTA-approved and bring a wealth of experience to their teaching. From what we’ve observed, they’re adept at customising lessons to address specific needs, significantly boosting driving confidence.

One unique aspect of Alert Driving School is their multilingual instruction, offering lessons in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Gujarati. We like how this inclusivity makes their services accessible to a diverse group of learners!

However, there are a few drawbacks to consider. First, we’re a bit iffy that the cost of some specialised courses can be higher compared to other schools.

Additionally, their weekend availability is limited, which might be inconvenient for those with busy weekday schedules.

A1 Driving School is a stellar choice for aspiring drivers in Auckland. We were particularly impressed by their deep-rooted experience and comprehensive course offerings.

Their diverse lesson plans, ranging from beginner courses to advanced defensive driving, is great for every driver to find the right fit for their skill level.

One of the standout aspects we noted about A1 is their personalised instruction. Upon observing their sessions, we noted how the instructors are adept at adjusting their teaching methods to suit different learning styles.

The consensus of the students we surveyed is that the flexible approach made their learning experience both effective and enjoyable.

Also, we approve of A1’s dual-controlled vehicles that provide an extra layer of safety.

We must note, however, a couple of things we believe aren’t much of a standout. The school’s popularity means that booking slots, especially on weekends, can be challenging.

And while their lesson prices are competitive, they may be higher compared to some newer driving schools in the area.

Pros

  • Has a strong reputation being an older establishment
  • Personalised and adaptive teaching methods
  • Dual-controlled vehicles for enhanced safety

Cons

  • Limited weekend availability due to high demand
  • Potentially higher prices compared to newer schools

An enjoyable experience

Had my first lesson of many today, it was amazing! Door to door service so your instructor will drive to your house, they have great options for north shore lessons which is really difficult to find. Also really great prices for lessons. As a learner driver I was made to feel very comfortable, normally my legs would be shaking and I’d have to pull over multiple times to bring myself together but I experienced none of that. My instructor was Adrienne and she made the experience very enjoyable, I felt absolutely no anxiety and it was a very calm experience. I was taken out of my comfort zone which made for a great experience as I learnt lots. Would definitely recommend and im looking forward to my next lessons!

Doesn’t push and force the issue

I thoroughly enjoyed my driving lessons with Ned. He’s very calm and helps me whenever I need it. He doesn’t push me into anything and the root we go on is very safe for a learner driver.

West Auckland Driving School got our attention for their exceptional approach to driver training. From what we’ve observed the school’s focus on practical, real-world driving skills stood out.

Their courses cover everything from learner’s permits to advanced licences for various vehicle classes, ensuring comprehensive training for all levels.

Students we spoke with mentioned that this style helped them grasp complex driving concepts more easily. In turn, they felt more confident and well-prepared for real-world driving.

On the flip side, high demand can sometimes make securing a spot a bit challenging, particularly during peak periods.

Moreover, the school’s wide-ranging and detailed course offerings can be more costly than those at other driving schools, which might be a concern for budget-conscious learners.

Pros

  • Flexible scheduling to fit busy lifestyles
  • Experienced instructors with industry knowledge
  • Wide range of licence endorsements

Cons

  • High demand can make booking challenging
  • Course offerings can be more costly than at other schools
