The 5 Best Vet Clinics in Auckland for Trusted Care and Peace of Mind

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Reputation: We spoke with pet owners and checked online forums to see what people had to say about their experiences at these clinics.
  • Services: We visited the clinics to check if they offered a wide range of services. This included routine checkups, vaccinations, dental care, and more.
  • Accessibility: We considered the clinic's location and ease of access, especially for people who need to visit frequently.
  • Cost: We compared prices for standard services like vaccinations and checkups. Value for money was a major factor for us.

Pet parents—you know the drill—those unpredictable moments when our beloved furry companions suddenly require extra attention.

Maybe your dog gleefully laps up your morning coffee like it’s the treat of the century. Or, your cat returns from a neighborhood brawl sporting a few new battle scars.

Either way, these unexpected scenarios usually lead to one thing—a trip to the vet.

We at Auckland Magazine did some digging to save you the stress of scrambling to find the right care. Here are the top-rated vet clinics in Auckland that are ready to keep your four-legged family members happy, healthy, and full of life.

How much does it cost to take your pet to a vet clinic in Auckland?

It costs at least 40 NZD to take your pet to a vet clinic in Auckland.

This is just an estimate. The cost will vary depending on your pet’s needs like vaccinations, dental care, surgery, and more.

Operating Hours:

Swanson Road Veterinary Clinic has been a local favorite for years. One thing that stood out to us is their dedication to educating pet owners and empowering them to make the best choices for their pets.

Their care for senior pets also deserves a special mention. Regular “nose-to-tail” exams help catch potential health issues early, like one cat owner who discovered their pet’s kidney problem in time to take action.

We also loved their online booking system—a lifesaver for busy pet parents like us.

However, there have been occasional hiccups with appointment cancellations not being properly communicated. This can be very frustrating, especially if you’ve taken time out of your day or rearranged your schedule.

Pros

  • Focuses on educating pet owners
  • Excellent care for senior pets
  • Convenient online booking

Cons

  • Appointment cancellation issue

Kind and knowledgeable staff

“Swanson Rd vet has to be the best clinic around. We take our kitten to see Susan, who has been the best we could have asked for. All the staff there are so kind and knowledgeable. Their prices are always the best. All situated in an adorable building with adequate parking.

Thank you team for all your help.”

Very informative and helpful reception staff

“Dr. Danielle and Dr. Sue are both very gentle and caring with our cats. The nurses and reception staff are also very informative and helpful. Everyone’s really nice, friendly and kind. Recently, we had one of our cats get a dental extraction and the service was great – from the drop off to the next day after the procedure when one of the nurses kindly gave us a follow up call to see how our kitty was doing. Thank you so much for your amazing work Swanson vet clinic! ♡”

What makes Auckland Pet Hospital stand out is its focus on preventative care and making visits stress-free for both pets and owners. Their boarding services are a godsend for pets needing extra post-procedure care.

We saw all these firsthand when they helped one person’s cat with arthritis. They came up with a plan that included pain management and nutritional counseling, and we find that impressive.

Their cardiology services are awesome, too. They’re equipped to handle even the most complex heart conditions, which is really reassuring.

Another thing we really liked was their behavioral counseling services. They take a really kind approach to help pets with behavior problems. We appreciate that they work with anxious pets and create custom training programs, too.

However, we were disappointed that one of our concerns wasn’t taken seriously. When we requested our pet’s medication, the staff member we approached seemed rushed and impatient. It left us feeling dismissed.

Pros

  • Focuses on preventative medicine
  • Stress-free procedures and boarding
  • Personalized care plans
  • Excellent cardiology services
  • Behavioral counseling services

Cons

  • Dismissive staff

Prompt and delightful to deal with

“My party and I were travelling and the wizard wanted to bring their Persian Schrödinger cat to another dimension. Thus we needed an MPI approved vet to fill the forms and checks to see if the cat was ok for transport. They were prompt and delightful to deal with even though the cat was trying hard to move around and escape.”

Compassionate staff

“The staff here are awesomely compassionate – and clearly animal lovers in their own right. I have been coming here for the last two decades and have always received top quality and very caring service, especially when my various cats have needed extra special care.”

Auckland Veterinary Hospital has been a trusted name for over 30 years, and it’s easy to see why. The team is highly skilled, and their vets have such a calming presence. It’s a real comfort, especially for nervous pet parents like us.

One thing we really love is how much they focus on preventative care. Their annual health checks are thorough and give peace of mind.

Their in-house diagnostic labs are a standout, too—super quick and accurate. One owner even shared how their cat’s heart murmur was caught early during a routine checkup, which likely made all the difference.

We were also seriously impressed by their surgical expertise. Whether it’s a tricky orthopedic procedure or tumor removal, they’ve got it covered.

And here’s a bonus: they’ve partnered with My Rover, so you can order pet food online. You can even pick up prescription meds straight from the clinic. It’s such a handy service that saves a lot of hassle.

With all these nice things considered, there’s a hiccup. We felt the vets could be a bit more empathetic at times. If you value a warm and reassuring approach, this is something to keep in mind.

Pros

  • Over 30 years of trusted experience
  • Highly skilled team
  • Focuses on preventive care
  • Quick and accurate in-house labs
  • Expert in complex surgeries
  • Convenient online services

Cons

  • Lack of empathy from vets

Thorough and detailed in explaining information

“Would highly recommend Auckland Veterinary Hospital. We came to them for a second opinion. The vet was very thorough and explained everything in terms that were easy to understand. We were only with them for about a month but they were very accomodating and were able to see us whenever we called, squeezing us in at very short notice when needed. They even followed up with phone calls to see how our dog was doing. We were also made very comfortable when it came time to say goodbye. They went above and beyond with our dog’s care and we will continue to recommend to others. My only regret was not coming to them sooner!”

The Strand Veterinarian really impressed us with its holistic approach to pet care—it’s like they thought of everything!

Their pet wellness plans are a standout feature. We love how these plans are tailored specifically to your furry friend. This also covers everything from regular checkups to preventative care like flea and worm treatments.

What really wowed us? They include pet insurance in their plans! Talk about making life easier. This really makes keeping up with your pet’s healthcare so convenient.

Plus, you can add on extra services like microchipping, dental care, and even registration. It’s like a one-stop shop for all your pet needs.

Another thing we absolutely loved is their fear-free environment. They go above and beyond to make pets feel safe and comfortable. They really treat each one like their own.

Just a heads up: some people mentioned issues like being double-charged for vaccines and struggling to get refunds. It’s a bit of a bummer, but hopefully, you won’t have to deal with it.

Pros

  • Holistic approach to pet care
  • Custom wellness plans
  • Offers pet insurance
  • Provides extra services
  • Fear-free environment

Cons

  • Double charges for vaccines
  • Difficulty in obtaining refunds

They have treated us as part of the family

“Dudley came into my life as a rescue over 12 years ago and has been under the care of the team at The Strand Vet ever since. They have treated us as part of the family, taking care of his needs through all stages of life and he absolutely loves coming to the clinic. Now in his later years with loads of love care and  heaps of daily pills he continues to thrive against the odds. Although I know pet healthcare is expensive…having my old mate with me every day against the odds for me is priceless.”

Caught an issue that we can now work through preventively

“Took my new puppy for his first vet visit and the staff were absolutely wonderful. They took time to show me around, made sure to make the experience positive for my doggo with lots of treats, socialising, and scratches. They were very thorough with the first visit and even caught an issue that we can now work through preventively. A really great team that I would definitely recommend!”

5.  Kohimarama Veterinary Clinic

Address: 325 Kohimarama Road, Kohimarama

Contact Details: +64 9 521 1457

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Friday – 8 AM to 6 PM
  • Saturday – 9 AM to 12 Noon

Website

Kohimarama Veterinary Clinic has been around forever, and it shows. The owner’s experience is next level—working with zoo animals? That’s seriously impressive!

One thing we really love about this clinic is the top-notch equipment they have. Digital X-rays, ultrasounds, an in-house lab—it’s like they’ve got a mini hospital just for pets.

Emergency care is another big win for them. They’re available even after their listed operating hours. It’s such a relief because let’s face it, pet emergencies don’t happen on a schedule.

What really blew us away, though, is their focus on animal dentistry. From cleanings to extractions and even restorative work, they’ve got it all covered.

And the results? No more bad breath or gum disease for their pets. It’s the kind of transformation that makes you wish you’d brought them in sooner.

However, we found dealing with rude staff disappointing. Good communication is so important, and it can be frustrating when it’s lacking.

In addition, antibiotics were noticeably pricier than at other clinics. If you’re on a tight budget, it might be worth exploring other options.

Pros

  • Extensive experience
  • Equipped with advanced tools
  • Offers emergency care
  • Exceptional focus on animal dentistry

Cons

  • Rude staff
  • Expensive antibiotics
