Some things are best left to the professionals. Take it from a guy whose DIY electrical “fix” involved a questionable amount of duct tape, a prayer whispered under his breath, and a light show that would’ve made a disco jealous (and terrified).
Well, let’s just say my attempt to rewire the fixture resulted in more sparks than a Tinder date gone right. Since then, I’ve left my DIY electrician days behind and now always leave it to the pros in town.
But who are these pros? As it happens, the Auckland Magazine team took some time to help me find these guys – here are all the ones with the best chance of helping you evade electrical disaster.
How much does an electrician in Auckland cost? Electricians in Auckland generally charge at least 90 NZD an hour. This rate varies depending on the experience of each electrician and the services offered. |
How We Chose
1. Grammar Electrical
Address: 27 Morningside Drive, Morningside, Auckland 1025, New Zealand
Contact Details: +64 9 884 4831
Operating Hours: Open 24 Hours
My friends recently set up a home in Auckland, and from rewiring some dodgy outlets to installing some fancy new downlights, Grammar Electrical did the job.
Unfortunately, they said booking an appointment for the actual work wasn’t exactly a speedy process. So, a little more communication about wait times would have been appreciated.
Nevertheless, they liked that Grammar Electrical’s team didn’t just slap on new light fixtures and call it a day. The electricians explained everything clearly, answered my friends’ never-ending questions patiently (there were a lot!).
Safety was a big deal too. They double-and triple-checked everything. It gave my friends real peace of mind knowing their house wasn’t going to turn into a horror movie of exploding outlets.
Initially, though, Grammar Electrical gave them a detailed quote before they started any work. There were a couple of minor charges that weren’t initially mentioned, like disposing of some old wiring.
Pros
- Safety first
- Clear explanations
- Detailed price quote
Cons
- Minor charges added
- Appointment lags

Great service and smooth process
“I contacted few electricians, only Grammar electric did the site visit. Great service by Kieran. He did the site visit, understood the work and answered all my questions. Came back another day to install exactly the way we discussed. This made everything very smooth. Price and timeframe are as per my expectation”

Would definitely book Grammar again for any other electrical repair work
“Patricia was able to book same-day repair and process a deposit over the phone. Keiran was early to our address. He assessed our situation and explained the different options for solution. He gave follow-up advice in case of the problem recurring. Would definitely book Grammar again for any other electrical repair work.”

2. Laser Electrical Auckland
Address: 9 Dundonald Street, Eden Terrace, Auckland 1021, New Zealand
Contact Details: +64 9 638 8883
Operating Hours: Monday to Friday – 6:30 AM to 4 PM
If you’re looking for a reliable electrician in Auckland who will explain things clearly and get the job done right, Laser Electrical may be the electric company you’re looking for.
They have multiple branches across Auckland, but it was a bit confusing trying to figure out which one to call. Maybe a central booking system or a clearer branch breakdown on their website would be helpful.
Regardless of this, we observed how, from the initial call to the follow-up email, everyone at Laser Electrical demonstrates professionalism and friendliness.
They took the time to explain things in a way anyone could understand, which is great, especially when dealing with potentially complex electrical issues.
Additionally, we noted that all their electricians are registered with the Electrical Contractors’ Association of New Zealand, and they prioritise eco-friendly practices.
We also liked that this company embraces new technologies. Their electricians can even install an EV charger (for those with an electric car).
It’s worth noting that though Laser Electrical isn’t the cheapest option on this list, the quality of service and peace of mind might be worth it.
Pros
- Multiple branches
- Embraces new technologies
- Eco-friendly practices
Cons
- No central booking system
- Expensive
Customer Reviews
Very knowledgeable and did a fantastic job
“Quick service at a good price. Cheaper than other companies but they do a fantastic job. I had another company attend before Laser and the guy couldn’t fix my power outage (first of all he was too old and weak to pull out a fuse for starters). The laser electrician came in and was young yet very Knowledgeable and actually left with everything working. Couldn’t recommend a better electrician service.”

Competitive pricing and good professional input
“We recently completed extensions and upgrades to our house including a swimming pool, Laser not only offered competitive pricing, but it was their additional professional input of offering and explaining the options available when requested. Helpful staff that always turned up on time and left the site tidy. Highly recommended.”

3. Amps Electrical Ltd
Address: 605D Great South Road, Manukau City Centre, Auckland 2104, New Zealand
Contact Details: +648002947348
Operating Hours: Open 24 hours
We at Auckland Magazine recently had the chance to put Amps Electrical Ltd. to the test. We needed some rewiring done in our office—the kind of job that sends shivers down any technophobe’s spine.
Amps Electrical returned our call promptly and were able to squeeze us into their schedule within the week. We did have to confirm a few times, though, and there was a bit of back-and-forth.
Not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of. Because, well, when your office electrics are on the fritz, you don’t want to wait around.
The electrician who came out, Harry (we think that was his name?), knew his stuff. And it didn’t feel like we were being spoken to in some secret electrician code.
There were a couple of times during the job where we wished the communication had been a bit more proactive. A quick heads-up about a potential delay or needing to grab an extra part would have been appreciated.
Still, he was patient and persistent, and he rewired our office with ease. And the final bill wasn’t an eye-watering shock.
Pros
- Prompt scheduling
- Knowledgeable electricians
Cons
- Communication issues
- Potential delays

Professional and genuinely respectful electricians
“I recently rang on behalf of my elderly father who is not tech savvy and needed electrical repairs done to his house.I spoke to Harry Singh from the Manukau branch in Auckland and although he was busy he managed to make time to call in to my dads house and assess what needed to be done as well as update me on the details. The work they done (Apologies I also need to thank his co worker but do not know his name)was excellent and my father was very happy and believe me my dad is not an easy man to please.I would recommend this company not only for their professionalism but also for their genuine respect they showed in making the whole process comfortable.”

Harry could not have been more helpful
“Harry was awesome. I had an electrical problem on Xmas Eve (a Sunday) and gave Amps a call. Harry took the time to work through the problem with me over the phone. We eventually identified the issue and were able to resolve with needing a visit. Harry could not have been more helpful. I will definitely be using Amps next time I need a Sparkie. Thanks Harry.”

4. Strike Electrical
Address: 300 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021, New Zealand
Contact Details: +64 508 787 453
Operating Hours: Open 24 Hours
Strike Electrical got a gold star from a lot of their past clients for a lot of reasons. First, they have a user-friendly website that’s easy to navigate. Booking an appointment online is also easy.
There’s also their 24/7 availability, which is perfect for those electrical emergencies that never seem to happen at a convenient time. Still, a heads-up might be handy—while they advertise free quotes, their emergency call-out does come with a fixed fee.
From what clients say, they’re friendly, professional, and happy to answer queries. Nearly everyone we asked also said the company fixed their electrical problem quickly and efficiently and (this is a big plus for them) left the workspace clean and tidy.
However, one minor thing: a handful of the people we talked to did feel the job took a tad longer than initially anticipated. It might be helpful to set clear expectations about timelines upfront, especially for non-emergency situations.
Pros
- User-friendly website
- 24/7 availability
Cons
- Fixed emergency service fee
- Delayed job completion

8. Aotearoa Electric Auckland
Address: 23 William Pickering Drive, Rosedale, Auckland 0632, New Zealand
Contact Details: +6494152074
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 7 AM to 7:30 PM
- Saturday – 9 AM to 1 PM
This one I got to test personally, as I recently had the chance to call in the crew at Aotea Electric Auckland for a bit of a house rewiring project.
From the initial quote process to scheduling the actual work, communication with Aotea Electric was smooth sailing. They kept me updated on everything.
The quality of their work was excellent, and they cleaned up meticulously afterwards—no random wires or mysterious tool parts left behind.
While the final bill was fair for the quality of work, though, I think the initial quote could have been a bit more detailed. It would have been nice to have a breakdown of the costs for materials, labour, etc. upfront.
That said, talking to other clients of theirs seems to show others disagree. What most of us did agree on, however, was that scheduling the company can be difficult.
In my case, scheduling the actual work took a few rounds of back-and-forth with Aotea Electric. They seem to be a busy bunch, which is a good sign in a way, but it did mean I had to be a bit flexible with my availability.
Pros
- Great communication
- Excellent quality of work
Cons
- No breakdown of costs
- Availability issues
