That’s when I suggested gown rentals. It’s a smart way to get a stunning look without overspending. The only problem? She wasn’t sure where to start.
To help her (and anyone else in the same boat), I enlisted the rest of my Auckland Magazine team to do some digging. After asking around and reviewing the options, we found the top gown rentals in Auckland that can make the whole process stress-free.
How much does renting a gown cost in Auckland?
Renting a gown in Auckland can cost anywhere $25 to $80, depending on the style and shop. If you’re looking to rent formal or designer gowns, expect them to be expensive. The final price still depends on the rental period.

Rent My Wardrobe is an adorable gown rental shop founded in 2024 by Maia. What stood out to us about this shop is that they have over 150+ collections to choose from. From chic non-designer to fancy designer pieces, they have it.
The fact that they have designer gowns made it possible for ladies who want to wear something high-end without paying thousands. Not all rentals offer designer pieces, so we consider this shop a great find.
Aside from that, they have reasonable pricing. For as low as $50, you can rent their Arabella Maxi, a lovely, elegant dress perfect for casual occasions. There are also cheaper ones, which cost $45.
But we also have to be honest that there are some that are on the pricier side. This includes puffy gowns and sequin-designed dresses. We completely understand since those gowns are new arrivals and are of top quality.
Other than that, we found this shop nice. Customers also said that Maia is organized and helpful throughout the rental process. For us, this makes the experience even more favorable.
Another good thing? They offer loyalty cards. This is perfect for those who often have to attend parties.

The Social Wardrobe is a rental shop famous for its 30-minute try-all-you-want appointment. This is a nice strategy on their end, but also a perfect opportunity for customers to try all the gowns they want before deciding.
They have their Mount Eden shop, but their rental services expand into wider areas. If you’re in Epsom, Newmarket, or Ponsonby, you can also rent from them. They have delivery options for convenience.
When it comes to the gowns they offer, we’re satisfied with their collections. They have different brands, including Paris Georgia, Lexi, and House of CB. Another good thing is that they have XL and XXL sizes, for those looking for such.
Aside from that, they also have accessories for rent. This might be an extra service, but helpful if you want something to complement your gown.
Clients are also happy with their experience with the shop, saying that they have a great fitting room. The gowns are also clean, and the staff are comfortable to talk to.
The only thing to take note of is that they’re on the pricier side. Their rentals typically start at $100.

Thread Rentals Ltd is another rent, wear, return shop built by Isabella Charman. She started selling her extra clothes and ended up building a rental shop instead.
If there’s one thing we like most about Isabella’s shop, it’s their level of inclusivity. When you visit their site, it’s clear that they have plus-size collections. It’s in front of their page, so ladies won’t have to ask anymore if they have such sizes.
Also, they have reasonable pricing. In fact, their large sizes are only priced at $35 to $70. This is indeed a budget-friendly shop, ideal for students and moms who are looking to save money.
Their collection also didn’t disappoint. From formal to flirty gowns and dresses, they have it. The designs are gorgeous. In fact, a customer said that the Mirella V-neck she rented got more compliments than she expected.
Clients also highlighted the shop’s great customer service. A customer said that she needed a dress at the last minute for her graduation, and the shop immediately assisted her and even helped her pick something that looked good on her.
The only thing we’re not so happy about is that they’re not open at weekends. This might not work for those whose only free days to browse gowns personally are Saturday and Sunday.

YsabelleQue is a well-established dress rental shop. Unlike other boutiques that serve a wider area, this shop only offers rentals in Auckland.
We appreciate that their shop has gowns and dresses available in sizes 6 to 26. Aside from their wide rental sizes, they also have great designs. A great example is their Bianca gown with refined trails and laces.
In fact, many clients adore their dresses. They mentioned that their collection has more luxurious-looking styles and colors. This is ideal if you want gowns with rhinestones or even pearl detailing.
We think that their fancy collection might also be the reason why they’re a bit expensive. Their rental fees are $300, while their fitting appointment is priced at $30. This is very far from other rental shops’ pricing.
But aside from their pricing, we appreciate that they have accessories, hair and makeup services. Many clients are also happy with this service because it saved them time, and the quality is great.
Lastly, we’re happy that they’re open 7 days a week. This is good news for busy ladies out there.

Stylestarter Boutique is a rental shop known for same-day rentals. This makes them a go-to store for those who need a dress at the last minute.
Their offerings captivated us than those of other shops. Their gowns and dresses are more in neutral colors, like white, black, and beige. This is perfect for those who don’t want bold colors, like red or blue.
Also, their pricing seems reasonable for us, with prices starting at $65. For their higher-priced styles, they allow flexible payments using Afterpay. We’re surprised that they offer interest-free payment since not all shops have this.
Customers are also glad with the store assistants. A client said that he sent a DiDi driver to collect the dress she rented, and the transaction went smoothly. She also said that the shop has great communication, even via email.
Another client also mentioned that aside from great dresses, the shop also has the best customer service. The staff are friendly and helpful in a way that won’t intimidate you.
The only thing to worry about is that some of their deliveries are a bit later than expected arrival. A client said that the package should’ve come at least 2 days before, instead of a day before.
