The 5 Best General Practitioners in Auckland Every Family Needs to Know

general-practitioners-in-auckland
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Areas of Expertise: We evaluated how many years each GP has been practising and the range of conditions they commonly treat. Key areas must include family medicine, chronic disease management, and preventive care.

Accessibility and Availability: We reviewed clinic hours, same-day availability, and online booking systems. We evaluated how easy it was to reach the clinic via phone or email.

Clinic Facilities and Environment: We observed the cleanliness, organisation, and overall atmosphere of each clinic. Clinics must be modern, well-equipped, and welcoming.

Range of Services: We examined how comprehensive the services were, including vaccinations, minor procedures, health screenings, and long-term care management.

Cost Transparency: We reviewed consultation fees and ACC coverage. We also took note of whether the pricing was clearly communicated.

When a family starts looking for a GP, the criteria are pretty much endless. They want someone who listens, understands, and feels like they’re part of the family.

From the little ones to Mum and Dad, a reliable GP can make any health journey much easier.

Availability, bedside manner, and trust all matter – and those are just a few things on top of quality services at a price that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

We took the time to speak to past patients and visit clinics ourselves to find Auckland’s best GP. See which ones are actually worth booking for your next check-up below!

How much does it cost to see a general practitioner in Auckland?

The cost of seeing a general practitioner in Auckland ranges from $60 to $90 for a 15-minute consultation. Average rates apply for enrolled adult patients. It may be lower for those with a Community Services Card.

1. Integrative Health Clinic

integrative health clinic

Location: 317 Pakuranga Road, Pakuranga Heights

Contact: +64 20 4026 3764

Website

We find Integrative Health Clinic to be a premier choice for patients who have “fallen through the cracks” of the standard medical system. Unlike most clinics that handle a high volume of general practice cases, this clinic is privately funded. This unique setup gives them the freedom to trade administrative box-ticking for deep, patient-centred care and root-cause medicine.

We were particularly impressed by their Initial Discovery Process. Instead of a standard 15-minute appointment, new patients undergo a staggering 105 minutes of clinical time: 60 minutes with an Integrative GP specialist and 45 minutes with a Naturopath.

This “deep-dive” onboarding is a major plus for patients with chronic symptoms—such as fatigue or hormonal imbalances—who have previously been told their blood reports are “normal.” The clinic uses an extensive intake form and specialised questionnaires to map out a patient’s biological history before they even step through the door.

Their diagnostic reach is also far beyond the standard scope. We loved their use of advanced functional testing, including DUTCH hormone panels, gut microbiome analysis, and genetic screening. This data-driven approach allows for highly personalised treatment plans, often utilising body-identical hormones and targeted nutraceuticals.

While they don’t offer general practice enrollment or urgent walk-in care, they are a standout choice for those seeking a specialised, multidisciplinary pathway to wellness that blends modern medicine with nutrition and lifestyle strategy.

Pros

  • Unrivalled consultation time (105-minute initial blocks)
  • Root-cause focus for “mystery” symptoms
  • GP and Naturopath collaborative team model
  • Advanced diagnostics (DUTCH, Gut, Genetics)
  • Specialised hormone care (Body-identical options)
  • Privately funded for low-admin, high-focus care
  • Reduces reliance on long-term medications

Cons

  • Non-enrolling clinic (Patients must maintain an external GP)
  • Higher investment for advanced testing and long-form consults

Truly unique approach

“I have been seeing Nayana for a few years now – she has helped me after having two children to restore my energy levels by identifying root cause and gentling working with me to help restore balance in my body and rebuild. Her approach is truly unique in identifying root cause and then treating accordingly. I totally trust and enjoy working with Nayana and highly recommend her.”

Website

We find Grey Lynn to be a top choice when it comes to affordability and breadth of services. As a VLCA high-needs funded practice, enrolled children can receive free 15-minute consultations.

Non-enrolled patients only have to pay $60 to $79.50 for 15 minutes.

We loved how comprehensive their new patient enrolments are. This process includes a 30-minute first visit with added nurse time before seeing the doctor.

The clinic also assists with medical record transfers and guides with the Ministry of Health eligibility criteria.

These factors are a major plus to us, especially for new patients.

We also find them a solid choice when it comes to the range of minor procedures. Patients can come here for skin tag removals, steroid injections, and lesion excisions.

The approach to consultations is also in-depth, with thorough reviews of patient history.

Unfortunately, the clinic suffers from occasional staff shortages. There’s also some dissatisfaction with reception, resulting in relatively long appointment times.

Pros

  • VLCA high-needs funded practice
  • Relatively low-cost
  • Free consults for eligible patients
  • Phone and video consult options
  • Medical record transfer assistance
  • Wide range of minor procedures
  • Onsite Health Coach
  • ACC injury appointments available
  • Thorough consultations

Cons

  • Occasional staffing shortages
  • Limited urgent availability
  • Some issues with reception

Excellent experience

“Dr Kavi and the team work hard to be efficient yet caring. From the phone call/reception to everyone at the clinic, me and my family have excellent experiences. Dr Kavi is a superb GP he is very thorough with the 15min timeslot and is always timely with followup comms. Thank you Grey Lynn Family Medical Centre”

Genuinely cares

“Grey Lynn Family Medical Centre is a wonderful GP practice, and Dr Kavitesh Deo is an excellent doctor. He is always spot on with his diagnoses and genuinely cares for his patients’ wellbeing. I have seen Dr Neil Hefford a number of times as well and he was, likewise, excellent.”

We find Life Doctors particularly strong when it comes to immigration medical services. They offer a wide range of services, including standard GP consultations, ACC injury assessments, and disease management.

It’s also a plus that eligible patients can enrol to access lower consultation fees.

The clinic is approved for both NZ and Australian immigration. They complete examinations and upload results directly through the eMedical system.

This takes away a lot of the rigorous process from the patient’s hands.

Services are available daily, which is a major plus. According to some of the patients we interviewed, turnaround times can be as soon as the same day.

Standard processing is within 3 days.

The range of services is comprehensive. They offer blood tests, urine tests, and blood pressure checks, among many others.

Staff communicate in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

That said, patients have to take note of certain extra fees. There’s a $10 cancellation fee within 24 hours, and an additional $5 fee for urgent same-day prescriptions.

Pros

  • Approved NZ immigration panel clinic
  • Direct eMedical system upload
  • Daily medical appointments
  • Same-day processing available
  • Comprehensive service range
  • ACC consultations
  • Enrolment available for lower fees
  • Multilingual staff
  • Free on-site parking

Cons

  • Cancellation fees apply
  • Extra fee for same-day prescription
  • Occasional long phone wait times

Fast and professional

“The clinic is very clean and organized, and the staff were efficient. They processed my additional medical documents for my Australian visa quickly, and I got my test results in just a week. Really appreciate their fast and professional service!”

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

What’s great about Bayside Medical Practice is that they focus more on long-term doctor-patient relationships.

It’s also a plus how Dr. Lee encourages potential patients to book a free 10-minute interview before enrolling. This emphasises compatibility and sets trust early on.

In terms of core services, they provide full GP care. Core offerings include ACC consultations, prescriptions, vaccinations, and contraceptives.

Travel vaccines are also available, though they are not certified for Yellow Fever vaccination.

Flexibility is a plus. Video and phone consultations can be arranged via reception.

On top of that, pricing is transparent and clearly tiered. Kids aged 0 to 13 are free, while adults over 18 pay $80 to $125 for basic consultations.

Many patients also confirmed Dr. Lee’s approachable bedside manner. He’s attentive, personable, and clear in his explanations.

Our only frustration is that his 15-minute consults feel very strict. In some instances, additional fees apply for extended time. Some patients felt that the approach was a bit rushed.

Pros

  • Free 10-minute pre-enrolment interview
  • Long-term care continuity
  • Online enrolment option
  • Video consults available
  • 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring
  • Wide range of services
  • Offers travel vaccinations
  • ACC injury management
  • Personable and attentive

Cons

  • Consultation length can feel tight
  • Requires additional fees for extension
  • Minor issues with late appointments

Professional knowledge and care

“Bayside is a great practice. Dr Lee is a happy, chatty and approachable and backs it up with professional knowledge and care. The reception and nurse staff are very nice and super prompt. It’s not hard to get a short-notice appointment if I ask nicely. 😁”

Friendly and caring

“My family and I have been visiting Bayside medical for a number of years now and can say we are very happy. All staff including Dr Young Lee are so friendly and caring. Highly recommended.”

5. Grafton Medical Centre

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Grafton Medical Centre stands out as a modern clinic. Everything feels seamless – booking is streamlined via phone or Manage My Health.

Screening questions were also asked prior to appointments. This makes it easy for patients to better recall their medical history for a more straightforward consultation.

We appreciate the flexibility they offer too. Phone, video, and face-to-face consultations are available.

As for the range of services, we like the strong emphasis on preventative health and lifestyle medicine.

Through collaborations with dental clinics, gyms, and professional specialists, they’re able to create a multidisciplinary network.

Some of their core offerings include adult and paediatric care, women’s and men’s health, and child health checks. This makes them a flexible choice for all types of needs.

When it comes to care, patients consistently describe the doctors as attentive, empathetic, and thorough.

That said, we’re sad to find out that short follow-ups are often billed at standard rates. For already expensive treatments, extra costs can easily add up.

Pros

  • Prevention-focused clinic
  • Streamlined booking options
  • Phone and video consultations available
  • Pre-appointment screening
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration
  • On-site parking
  • Fluent in English and Cantonese
  • Wide range of services
  • Diligent follow-ups

Cons

  • Minor issues with billing
  • Slow email response at times
  • May charge extra for slightly extended appointments

Incredible team

“Absolutely incredible team. Dr Lung, Dr Selva, the nurses and the receptionists genuinely care about your needs and are so attentive in trying to meet urgent requests or anything you may need. We will continue to remain grateful for their expertise and care.”

KR | Google Review

Goes above and beyond

“Dr Lung has been my GP for more than a decade (initially at another practice and then at Grafton Medical). Him and his team always go above and beyond, whether it is following up with results or checking in when I’ve been in hospital. I cannot speak more highly of him and I am so thankful he is my GP.”
