Running a business in Auckland is tough.
Start-ups figuring out shareholder agreements and established SMEs dealing with a contract dispute both share one need: crucial legal advice.
But finding a lawyer who “gets it” – someone who speaks plain English and doesn’t just watch the clock – can be a challenge.
You need a partner who protects your business without all the intimidating jargon.
We’ve looked at firms across the city, from boutiques to full-service giants, to find the best commercial lawyers in Auckland who can help you navigate the complexities of business law.
How much does a commercial lawyer cost in Auckland?
Legal costs in Auckland can feel all over the place.
For straightforward tasks like registering a business or reviewing a simple lease, many firms offer a fixed fee, which can range from a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.
For more complex work, like drafting a multi-layered shareholder agreement or handling a commercial dispute, you’ll likely be looking at hourly rates.
These can start around $250/hour for a junior lawyer and climb to $600/hour or more for a senior partner. The key is to always ask for a clear fee estimate or fixed-price quote upfront so there are no surprises.
1. Asco Legal

Website: https://www.ascolegal.co.nz/
Address: 6 Uxbridge Road, Howick, Auckland
Contact: 09 308 8070 and [email protected]
Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Asco Legal is all about making law less intimidating. They call themselves “down-to-earth,” and that’s exactly the vibe I got.
They’re a boutique firm, so they don’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead, they focus on being brilliant at a few key things, especially franchising.
If you’re buying a franchise, they know that world inside and out, which is a massive advantage.
They really drill down on giving advice you can actually understand, “bringing law back down to earth,” as they put it. Their emphasis on clear, upfront pricing is a huge relief, so you know what you’re in for before you commit.
The only potential catch is that because they are a focused boutique firm, they might not cover every single legal area a giant corporation needs. But for commercial, property, franchising, and other legal business concerns, they demonstrate deep expertise.
Our experience working with ASCO Legal on our business purchase was exceptional. Chris, Izzy, Cassandra, and Nadia provided outstanding support, guiding us seamlessly through every step of the process. Their team was consistently responsive, professional, and detail-oriented, ensuring a smooth and stress-free transaction. We couldn’t have asked for a better team and highly recommend their services to anyone navigating a business purchase or sale.

Schedule: By appointment.
Evolution Lawyers is built for the modern business owner who hates wasted time and money.
Their whole model is “powered by technology,” which means they’re virtual, mobile, adept, and super-efficient.
This isn’t your grandad’s stuffy law firm.
They started the firm specifically because they felt traditional lawyers weren’t providing good value. They focus on competitive rates and pragmatic solutions, which is a great fit for start-ups or SMEs trying to keep costs down.
They’re a general practice, so they can handle your business contracts, property leases, and even your personal trust, all in one place.
The only thing to consider is that, as a general practice, they might not have the same super-niche, deep-dive specialisation in one complex area (like insolvency) that a dedicated boutique firm would.
But for all-around business needs, they’re incredibly efficient.
I have used Evolution Lawyers for both house conveyancing and for my commercial business. In all my dealings with them I have found them to be extremely knowledgeable, timely and professional. I actively refer my clients to them and would have no hesitation in recommending them for any type of legal work.

Address: Level 9, HSBC Tower, 188 Quay Street, Auckland
Contact: 09 377 9966 and [email protected]
Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
If you’re looking for stability and a firm that has seen it all, McVeagh Fleming is a powerhouse.
They’ve been around for over 100 years, so you’re buying into a massive amount of experience and a rock-solid reputation.
This is a “full-service” firm, which means they can handle literally anything you throw at them, including complex mergers and personal family trusts.
One of their biggest advantages is their membership in ‘Ally Law,’ a global network. If your business deals with international suppliers or customers, this global reach is invaluable.
They also have three offices across Auckland, which makes them really accessible.
The only trade-off for this size and history is that the firm may feel more “corporate” than a boutique law firm, so if you’d rather keep things flexible and aren’t big on formal procedures, you might feel a bit boxed in here.
I would like to thank Taufil Omar and Lu Wang at McVeagh Fleming for helping me in my commercial matter that was extremely complicated. But they made is very easy and took the pressure off us & my family.
I highly recommend them always.

Address: Level 20, HSBC Tower, 188 Quay Street, Auckland
Contact: 09 379 7333 and [email protected]
Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Martelli McKegg offers the best of both worlds: the stability of a firm that’s been around for over 100 years, plus a massive international reach.
They are part of Meritas, a huge global affiliation of law firms. This means if you have a legal issue in another country, they have a trusted partner ready to help.
Their motto is “From complexity to clarity,” and they really focus on giving practical advice that just makes sense for your business.
I particularly liked their promise that a partner oversees every single project.
It gave me real peace of mind knowing a senior expert was reviewing my file, not just a junior. They really want to get to know your business.
The only minor drawback is that their main physical office is in the CBD, which might be a bit of a trek if you’re based out in the suburbs and need regular face-to-face meetings.
Such a great firm who take care of your needs. Show some interest in people with genuine care.
Lee is so amazing and is caring.
Go out of their way to make sure the service in Excellent.
Highly Recommended.

5. Norling Law Limited

Website: https://norlinglaw.co.nz/
Address: Level 1, 55 Corinthian Drive, Albany, Auckland
Contact: 09 973 0543 and [email protected]
Schedule: By appointment.
Norling Law is who you call when things get really serious. They are a highly specialised boutique firm that lives and breathes complex commercial disputes and insolvency.
This isn’t the firm you use to review a simple lease. This is the firm you hire when you’re facing high-stakes litigation or urgent financial trouble.
Their whole approach is “results-focused” and they have a “Get it Done” attitude, which is exactly what you need in a crisis.
They’re based in Albany but serve clients all over New Zealand. They even offer a 30-minute no-obligation chat to see if they can help.
The clear downside is their narrow focus.
If you need general commercial advice, immigration, family law, or property help, they might not be the right fit. But if you’re in a tough dispute, they are specialists.
Norling Law were outstanding to deal with — highly knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely committed to achieving the best possible outcome for their clients. Their communication was clear and consistent throughout the process, and they provided expert guidance with care and integrity. I would whole heartedly recommend Norling Law to anyone seeking experienced and trustworthy legal representation. Special thanks to Marizan – she was a pleasure to work with.
– Christine Boyce, Google Review
Norling law helped me to clear a heap of debt and set up a payment plan which I can afford. They were so nice and supportive and didn’t judge me on my past mistakes! They had so had brilliant advice. I am so happy with the result. Highly recommend!
