City Views or Harbour Hues: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Accommodations in Auckland

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

When we were choosing the best places to recommend, we looked at how each stay enhances the entire travel experience, not just the room. We focused on the following key factors to ensure our suggestions cater to diverse traveller needs:

Location and Accessibility: We focused on finding locations that put you right where things are happening or places with super easy access to transportation. A central location is a huge plus for tourists who want to walk to attractions and for business travellers who need quick commutes.

Unique Offerings and Style: Every location had to offer something special, such as a beautiful building design or truly amazing, customised service. This ensures we feature a range of distinct options for various traveller preferences.

Value for Money: We looked at more than just the lowest price and focused on what people actually received for their money. We took into account the quality of the amenities, the size of the rooms, and how satisfied guests were overall, and then compared those factors to the cost of the night.

Targeted Comfort and Space: We checked for options that cater specifically to families needing room to spread out or couples desiring a quiet, luxurious, and intimate atmosphere. This ensures we have suitable choices for those requiring extra space or a higher level of luxury.

Planning a trip to the stunning City of Sails? Finding the right accommodation in Auckland is the first step to an amazing trip.

If you want to be close to all the sights and sounds for work or fun, you can stay right downtown. But, if you’re looking for something quieter, maybe for a romantic getaway or a family holiday, there are plenty of peaceful, luxurious spots too.

We’ve gathered a list of the top hotels and places to stay, highlighting options for high-end luxury, budget-friendly travellers, and those needing roomy family suites.

We are breaking down the best options so you can book with confidence and enjoy this vibrant city.

How much does accommodation cost in Auckland?

The price of your stay in Auckland really depends on when you’re visiting, where you want to be, and how much comfort you’re after. Prices also move around a lot with seasons and big events, so treat these as rough ballpark figures rather than fixed rates.

If you’re a budget-minded backpacker, you can usually find a bed in a shared hostel room for around $30 to $60 NZD per night. If you’re a tourist or business traveller looking for a comfortable, standard hotel room in a central location, expect to pay roughly $150 to $300 NZD per night, depending on the time of year and how far in advance you book.

If you’re travelling with your family and need a larger serviced apartment, or if you’re a couple wanting a luxurious, fancy hotel, prices will generally start at around $350 NZD. The cost can climb much higher than that, especially if you want those amazing harbour views! No matter your budget, you’ll find a suitable option in Auckland.

As always, it’s worth checking a few dates and booking platforms, because deals, packages, and seasonal promos can make a big difference to what you actually pay.

The M Social Hotel’s main appeal is its prime waterfront location right on Princes Wharf, offering spectacular harbour views.

This hotel is a fantastic pick if you want to be right on the water and next to all the action. The rooms are contemporary and stylish, making it feel very current and trendy.

I especially loved the floor-to-ceiling windows. Getting up in the morning and seeing the boats in the marina was a beautiful start to the day.

Customer Reviews

One of the best hotels i have stayed at. The location was perfect, the view from the room was beautiful. Rooms were clean and just the right size. The staff were all so lovely and attentive. Food was delicious especially the breakfast buffet (one of the best I have had). Great value for money. Only small thing was the shower head was quiet small but it wasn’t an issue. Would highly recommend and would definitely stay again. Thanks immensely ☺️

A true gem in Auckland’s CBD. We stayed for 7 nights and I’m glad we did. Quick, easy walk to shopping, restaurants and attractions. Rooms are very quiet, staff is terrific (the coffee is excellent and served with a smile), and breakfast buffet is varied and delicious. Highly recommended

Contact: 09-888-6868

Hours

  • Check-in: 2:00 PM
  • Check-out: 11:00 AM

If you’re heading to Auckland, the Hotel Grand Chancellor is a strong choice, especially for business travellers.

What I love most about this hotel is its proximity to the New Zealand International Convention Centre. This makes it a brilliant and convenient base for corporate travellers once the convention centre, scheduled to open in February 2026, is fully up and running.

Even as a leisure traveller, I found the central location incredibly useful. It’s super close to the Sky Tower and Queen Street shopping.

I highly recommend getting a higher room because the city or harbour views are a lovely way to relax after a long day! You can also relax in the hotel’s courtyard, if that’s more up your alley.

Just be aware that because it’s so central, the immediate area can be quite busy and a bit noisy at times.

Pros

  • Ideal location for business travellers and sightseers
  • Stunning city and harbour views from upper floors
  • Family-friendly room options available
  • Comfortable, well-equipped rooms with large beds
  • Dedicated courtyard for a quiet city oasis

Cons

  • The very central location can be noisy at times

Customer Reviews

We stayed in a room on the 11th floor, and had a fantastic view of the harbour and the sky tower which looks great at night. The service from the staff has been excellent and had a lovely chat with the lady that was overseeing breakfast on Saturday morning and she told us she was running a marathon the following morning. After a busy day mooching around, we had dinner in the hotel restaurant, we can highly recommend the pork ribs 😋 👌. The rooms are a good size and have everything you need, and the bed in our room was huge and very comfortable. Highly recommend this hotel 😊

Spent 3 nights for our 25th anniversary.  What wonderful accommodations.  Staff were warm and welcoming.  We were given a surprise treat in our room for our anniversary.  Thank you staff for making it so special. The rooms are a great size and I love the layout. Bathroom was treat clean and spacious. The location is close to everything we wanted to do. I will definitely recommend and come back.

Its location right on Queen Street is ideal for easy access to the city centre and is directly opposite the Aotea Centre and Town Hall. This makes it a huge convenience if you’re in town for a show, concert, or event.

Just be aware that the check-out time is a bit earlier at 10:00 AM, which might feel a little rushed compared to other hotels.

Overall, this hotel appeals strongly to anyone drawn to beautiful architecture, style, and a luxurious stay close to the city’s cultural heart.

  • Prime location for shows, concerts, or events
  • Offers a fantastic on-site dining experience

New favourite Auckland hotel! Check in a breeze, given a room upgrade, valet parking (was not charged for). Room clean & fresh, very upmarket, great shower, bed very comfortable. Their restaurant very clean & relaxing ambiance, great food. Welcoming staff all very well trained (other Auckland hotels take note). We will definitely return as we go to many Town Hall concerts. Thanks guys.

  • Check-out: 11:00 AM

Ohtel Auckland is a chic, five-star boutique hotel with rooms that have a cosy, apartment-style feel and a cool, unique vibe

The use of mid-century furnishings and cool Kiwiana artwork gives it a wonderful, funky vibe.

Couples especially love the thoughtful touches at Ohtel. You’ll find some really fun touches in certain rooms, like working record players and beautiful standalone tubs.

Even though it’s right by the lively Viaduct Harbour, the rooms are surprisingly peaceful and quiet. Plus, you get great relaxation amenities like an outdoor pool, hot tub, and sauna.

Just a heads-up, the secure onsite car parking is limited and costs $32 per night. If you have a car, you absolutely must book parking in advance.

Pros

  • Unique 5-star boutique style with custom furnishings
  • Excellent location right next to Viaduct Harbour
  • Features a pool, hot tub, and sauna for relaxation
  • Quiet rooms despite being near a busy area

Cons

  • Parking must be reserved in advance due to limited spots

Customer Reviews

The staff here is amazing!  Everyone is extremely friendly and attentive, and it’s in a perfect location – just next door to Viaduct Harbour where all the restaurants are but we couldn’t hear any noise in our room, which was great.  The parking is easy, although you do need to reserve that beforehand, and the breakfast was delicious.  We enjoyed the pool, hot tub and sauna as well.  Perfect boutique hotel and would definitely stay here again!

Great suite, the self standing bathtub and the record player were nice additions. Our suite also had a fairly big patio even though it was too cold in Auckland to enjoy it but would be perfect during summer. They even had a pillow menu from which you could order with your desired shape / firmness. The only con is that it’s not that central but you just have to walk 10 minutes to get to the main street.

5. Hotel Fitzroy

Website: https://www.fablehotelsandresorts.com/hotels/hotel-fitzroy

Address: 43 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland

Contact: 09-243-0400

Hours

  • Check-in: 2:00 PM
  • Check-out: 11:00 AM

Hotel Fitzroy offers a quiet, high-end boutique experience, with thoughtful inclusions like in-room breakfast, a complimentary minibar, and evening drinks, all away from the city centre’s hustle and bustle.

This small boutique hotel is tucked away in the stylish Ponsonby neighbourhood, which is known for its cafés and galleries. It’s a little removed from the CBD bustle.

While the rooms are on the smaller side, they are beautifully designed with luxurious touches like rainfall showerheads and high-end finishes.

The biggest practical hurdle is that there is no lift as the hotel has only 2 floors. This can be an issue for guests with heavy luggage.

The hotel offers wheelchair-accessible accommodation, but because it’s a small boutique property, it’s best to let them know about any mobility needs and request an accessible room well in advance.

Overall, if you’re looking for a personalised, high-end, and quiet retreat, Hotel Fitzroy is a fantastic choice.

Pros

  • Exclusive, personalised small boutique experience
  • Complimentary daily breakfast and evening drinks
  • Located in the beautiful, trendy Ponsonby area
  • High level of finish and design in all rooms
  • Exceptional and attentive staff service

Cons

  • The hotel does not have an elevator

Customer Reviews

Fitzroy was all we wanted to wrap up our honeymoon. The hotel is located in a beautiful area, rooms are quiet and beds are large, breakfast was delicious and the 2 team members we interacted with – Pablo and Eric – were friendly and helpful (thanks Pablo for the “what to do in 1 day in Auckland” recommendation) We would totally come back here if ever again in Auckland. Last but not least, short 30 mins ride from the airport

We had a great experience at this hotel. The rooms are a tad small, though adequate for a couple. It feels very “boutique” in nature as the room has a high level of finish, it is a small hotel, and the common “library” room upstairs is cozy and pleasant. The complementary hors d’oeuves and drinks is a nice touch and the breakfast was exceptional.
