Not too long ago, I made the daring decision to tutor a cousin in algebra. Two hours in, I wasn’t sure who was tutoring whom. We could barely make progress!
Between his tangents about Minecraft and my distress signals to his parents, it became abundantly clear we needed to find him some professional help. Not the psychiatric kind—though, honestly, after trying to explain linear equations for the tenth time, I was ready to sign myself up.
So parents, if you’re feeling like I was—lost and confused about the curriculum the kids are learning these days—save yourself the headache with this article. I’ve listed all of the best tutors in Auckland (which my aunt and uncle made me find after I gave up on my cousin)!
How much does tutoring cost in Auckland? In Auckland, expect to spend at least 28 NZD per hour for one-on-one tutoring. This price is just an estimate and will vary depending on tutoring packages and what tutoring company you go with. |
How We Chose
1. Educatum
Address: 3102 Great North Road, New Lynn, Auckland 0600, New Zealand
Contact Details: +64800355755
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 3 PM to 8:30 PM
- Saturday – 9 AM to 2:30 PM
Website: Educatum
Educatum might just be your lifesaver—especially if you’ve got a kid between 5 and 16 struggling to crack the codes of math and science.
First off, they offer a mix of one-on-one coaching, study buddy sessions, and (thank heavens) online tutoring, which many parents have described to us as a gift for their jam-packed schedules.
The group sessions are small too—just six kids—so your child won’t just be another face in the crowd. That’s a solid ratio for ensuring each kid still gets attention.
Others I talked to also liked the mid-year and end-of-year exams they do. These come with certificates up for grabs that make monitoring your kid’s progress easy.
However, I noticed that Educatum only tutors in math and science. So, if your child is looking to write the next great novel or paint like Picasso, you’ll need to look elsewhere for that guidance.
And heads up, I was told that it’s a pay-per-month deal, which is easy on the budgeting side but means committing to more than one lesson.
Pros
- Small group sessions
- Variety of tutoring types (online, group, etc)
- Regular exams for tracking progress
Cons
- Only tutors in math and science
- Requires a monthly commitment

I’m able to reach the best possible grades
“I joined Educatum in year 8 and it’s been incredible seeing how much progress I’ve made over the years. The support and encouragement I’ve received have ensured that I’m able to reach the best possible grades and understanding of content I’ve been taught at school. Thank you so much for all the help provided at Educatum and I would definitely recommend Foram and his team for anyone who wishes to improve with their maths and science.”

2. MyTuition
Address: 1 Beresford Square, Auckland Central
Contact Details: [email protected]
Operating Hours: Monday to Friday – 10 AM to 4 PM
Website: MyTuition
After talking with several parents, the consensus is clear: MyTuition is spot on when it comes to personalised learning. They cater solely to the Year 7–13 crowd across NCEA, Cambridge, and IB, which is great for those in the older age brackets but not ideal if your kid is still mastering multiplication.
Many parents also said they loved the flexibility of their tutoring sessions. Whether at home or the local library in Auckland, the sessions are hassle-free and well conducted. They do online lessons too, BTW!
And every student gets a post-lesson summary, so no parent is left in the dark about their kid’s strengths, weaknesses, and the next steps to take. Plus, their tutoring services are pay per lesson—perfect for commitment-phobes.
Pros
- Pay per lesson
- Home, library and online lessons
- NCEA, Cambridge and IB tutoring
Cons
- No tutoring for kids below grade 7

He learnt so much more than he did at school
“We had an excellent experience with My Tuition. My son had an excellent tutor in physics who was smart and young so they totally got each other. He learnt so much more than he did at school. His tutor made it a lot easier to understand physics and getting the feedback each week was really helpful. He learnt a lot, it really helped. The whole process was very seamless and easy. Highly recommend!”

3. Ace Tutors
Address: 8 Kalmore Place, Dannemora, Auckland 2016, New Zealand
Contact Details: +64211072851
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday – 7:30 AM to 9:30 PM
Website: Ace Tutors
Ace Tutors is a beacon of knowledge, particularly for secondary school students. If you’re hunting for a specialist to buff up those math and science marks, Ace Tutors could be your ticket.
First up, from speaking with their tutors, I noted they offer a free trial lesson. Curriculum-wise, from NCEA to Cambridge to IB, they teach math and science like they were born, doing quadratic equations and periodic tables.
However, that’s the extent to which their curriculum goes. They strictly tutor secondary-level pupils (no elementary students here) and don’t dabble in the literary field.
Despite this, many parents I talked to loved the flexibility of their lessons and the patience the tutors have with their children—no rushing through lessons, either.
Pros
- Math and Science tutoring for secondary level
- Flexible lessons
- Patient tutors
Cons
- No English tutoring
- No tutoring for younger kids

Mr. Param has helped me immensely by explaining any topics or questions that I have
“As a year 9 student newly entering college and being introduced to learning many new and unexplored topics in a way of learning I have never done before Ace tutoring by Mr. Param has helped me immensely by explaining any topics or questions that I have about what I am learning in a very self paced environment. It helps me understand any topics that I have questions about or a general curiosity to learn about in the best way for me and helped me grow at my own speed.”

4. Kip McGrath Three Kings
Address: 852a Mount Eden Road, Three Kings, Auckland 1024, New Zealand
Contact Details: +64212473751
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 10 AM to 8 PM
- Saturday – 8 AM to 3 PM
Website: Kip McGrath Three Kings
Kip McGrath has carved a niche in tutoring kids specifically in math and English, so if your kid needs help outside of those subjects, this isn’t the spot for you.
Before your kid can start tutoring here, they have to take an assessment (yes, it’s free). From speaking with their tutors, the assessment helps them design a personalised learning plan for your kid.
In these customised learning programmes, they blend written exercises with snazzy computer-based activities.
And every session closes with feedback and regular progress reports. So your anxieties about whether your child is improving can take a chill pill.
Do note that the sessions are weekly and fully dedicated to one-on-one interaction. So there aren’t any group sessions here, which is not great if your kid learns better in a more social learning environment.
Pros
- Free tutoring assessment
- Personalised learning plans
- Regular progress reports
Cons
- Math & English tutoring only
- No group tutoring

9. Brilliance Educare Centre
Address: 18-20 Frost Road, Mount Roskill, Auckland 1041, New Zealand
Contact Details: +6496204690
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 4 PM to 8 PM
- Saturday – 2 PM to 6 PM
Website: Brilliance Educare Centre
Brilliance Educare caters to kids from year 0 to 13, dabbling in NCEA, Cambridge, and IB curriculum.
Their approach? From what I’ve observed, whether it’s the intimacy of private sessions, the digital convenience of online tutoring, or the dynamic vibe of group tutoring, they’ve got it all.
And they keep their group sessions cosy and compact, maxing out at eight kids per group, all matched by IQ levels.
However, I’ve been told Brilliance isn’t your bargain tutoring company—it’s on the pricier side.
But hey, parents have also told me their flexible class timings are a godsend, especially for those who perform the daily juggling act of work, parenthood, and the occasional sanity maintenance.
Pros
- Year 0 to 13
- NCEA, Cambridge, and IB curriculum
- Private, one-on-one and group sessions
- Flexible class schedules
Cons
- Expensive
