5 Best Business Bank Accounts in Auckland (Small Business, Startups & Sole Traders)

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Fee Transparency - Hidden costs can eat into your margins quickly. We looked for clear pricing structures to ensure you aren't blindsided by unexpected transaction fees at the end of the month.

Digital Integration - Time is money for any business owner. We prioritised banks that sync seamlessly with accounting software like Xero or MYOB to save you hours on administrative tasks.

Customer Support Accessibility - When a payment fails, you need help immediately. We checked if support is available when actual business happens, rather than just strictly during traditional banking hours.

Scalability - A side hustle can quickly turn into an empire. We examined whether these accounts offer room to grow, checking for features like easy overdrafts or complex asset finance options.

Starting a business is thrilling, but sorting out the financial admin? Not so much. I know the feeling of drowning in paperwork when all you want to do is launch your product or serve your first client.

Finding the right banking partner is crucial because it’s not just about a safe place for your money. It’s about cash flow and ease of access that actually help you grow.

Whether you are a sole trader or running a bustling SME, the right support makes all the difference. I’ve dug into the top local options to help you find the perfect fit for your venture.

How much does a business bank account cost in Auckland?

The cost of banking really depends on how you operate. Most major banks in Auckland won’t charge you a cent just to set up an account, which is a relief for bootstrapped startups. However, you need to watch out for the ongoing costs. Monthly service fees usually sit between zero and $12.50. You might find that transaction fees, such as charges for manual deposits or electronic transfers, can add up if you have high volume. It is worth noting that if you are a non-profit or a brand-new business, many banks offer fee waivers to help get you off the ground.

ANZ (Manukau Mall Branch)

anz-manukau-mall-branch

Website: https://www.anz.co.nz/business/accounts-and-cards/business-accounts/
Address: Store S001/S185 Manukau Station Road, Manukau City Centre, Auckland
Contact: 0800 269 296
Schedule:

  •  Mon – Wed & Sat: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Thu – Fri: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Sun: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

ANZ stands out immediately if you work in a specialised field. Their tailored accounts for industries like law and agribusiness show they understand that not all businesses operate the same way.

The Solicitors Trust account and Agri Current account are prime examples of this industry-specific focus. Beyond that, their “Trust Management services” are a lifesaver for professionals managing multiple client funds.

I actually popped into the Manukau branch recently to ask about their merchant services, and despite the queue, the staff moved with impressive efficiency. However, it’s not all perfect.

If you are looking to save, be aware that opening a Term Deposit requires a hefty minimum investment of $10,000. That might be a steep barrier for a small startup just finding its feet.

But if you need robust depositor compensation schemes and diverse financial capabilities, ANZ is a heavy hitter worth considering.

Pros

  • Easy access for daily transactions
  • Competitive interest on premium calls
  • Flexible overdrafts linked to accounts
  • Fixed returns on Term Deposits

Cons

  • High minimum investment for Term Deposits

BNZ Auckland HQ

bnz-auckland-hq

Website: https://www.bnz.co.nz/business-banking/small-business
Address: 80 Queen Street, Auckland, 1010, New Zealand, Auckland
Contact: 0800 275 269
Schedule: Mon – Fri: 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM

BNZ makes a compelling case for the “little guy” with their Big Small Business Package. They really emphasise support for growth, offering local partners who can guide you through scaling up.

This is fantastic if you feel a bit lost in the corporate world. A major perk is their partnership with CrowdStrike, giving you a year of free cybersecurity protection.

The Free Partners Centres are another unique touch, providing physical space for meetings without the overhead of renting an office.

On the downside, their Business First Transact account has eligibility restrictions.

It is generally capped for businesses with an annual turnover under $5 million. If you are already past that stage, you might find their entry-level perks less accessible.

Still, for everyday banking with zero monthly fees, it’s a strong contender.

Pros

  • Zero monthly or transaction fees
  • Mobile payments via BNZ Pay app
  • Seamless online store integration
  • 24/7 account management access

Cons

  • Turnover limit of $5 million

Customer Reviews

Visited BNZ to open a new account and was impressed by the Tessa’s professionalism and friendliness. She guided me through the entire process patiently and made everything straightforward. Thank you Tessa!

I had an excellent experience when I visited the branch. The front desk staff, Mr. Chandima, was exceptionally helpful and polite. The process of opening a bank account was quick and smooth, and I am extremely satisfied with the service.

Westpac Auckland City

westpac-auckland-city

Website: https://www.westpac.co.nz/business/
Address: 79 Queen Street, Auckland Central, Auckland
Contact: 0800 400 600
Schedule: Mon – Fri: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Westpac appeals to business owners who want more than just a vault for their cash.

Their “Westpac SMARTS” program offers free access to insights from top business minds, which can be a game-changer when you are looking for strategy.

I also appreciate their commitment to sustainability. Their specialised loans for green goals are perfect if you are trying to build an eco-conscious brand.

They also offer “Westpac Get Paid,” a flexible solution to help you turn sales into cash faster, whether you are online or in-store. However, you need to be careful with their lending products.

They are strictly ring-fenced for business purposes, so you can’t mix personal or household needs into those loans.

I spoke to a cafe owner on Queen Street who swears by their industry specialists, noting that having a banker who actually understands hospitality made a huge difference during the off-season.

If you’re a business owner in the Auckland area or are trying to open one, they’re an option highly worth considering.

Pros

  • Platforms tailored to business size
  • Earn rewards on business spending
  • Accounts for non-profits available
  • Virtual credit card for easy spending

Cons

  • Loans are strictly for business use

Customer Reviews

I had the great luck to work with Joanie Rankin regarding my home loan and general accounts. Superb service. Thorough, helpful, and genuine. I highly recommend!

Went to the bank yesterday to get some very important documents sorted that I was a little stressed about. I had called into the customer line for westpac the day before but still was unsure of what needed to be done. The tellers at the bank were cheery, friendly and knew exactly what to do to get it done. They double, triple checked with me that everything was correct and I left feeling happy and confident everything was properly completed. Would recommend the very helpful staff at this branch ❤️

ASB (Auckland Branch)

asb-auckland-branch

Website: https://www.asb.co.nz/small-business-banking/small-business-banking-options.html
Address: 300 Queen Street, Auckland Central, Auckland
Contact: 09 306 3011
Schedule: Mon – Fri: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM

ASB is all about speed and integration. Their Seven Day Settlement feature is a massive benefit for retail or hospitality businesses that don’t want to wait until Monday to see their weekend takings.

It really helps smooth out cash flow bumps.

They also offer a Card Tracker feature, which lets you see exactly where your card details are stored across different subscriptions. It is a smart way to keep a handle on those recurring expenses that often slip through the cracks.

Plus, their Visa Debit for Business comes with zero annual fees, which is a nice bonus.

However, not everything is free. While the card fee is $0, using the FastNet Business service will incur transaction fees, and you might face monthly overdraft costs.

If you rely heavily on complex online transactions, those small fees can accumulate. But for seamless integration with Xero or MYOB, ASB is hard to beat.

Pros

  • Diverse payment acceptance options
  • Auto-sync with accounting software
  • Separate business and personal expenses
  • Tools for foreign currency management

Cons

  • Fees apply to FastNet Business

Customer Reviews

Great experience. I did not catch their name, but a staff member helped me verify my identity without me booking an appointment. Very friendly. Made me feel appreciated and that my time was respected.

I had a great experience with ASB thanks to Tino. He was incredibly kind, patient, and professional throughout the whole process. He made everything easy to understand and took the time to answer all of my questions. I truly appreciate his support and friendly attitude — it made a big difference. Thank you, Tino!

Kiwibank (Fanshawe)

kiwibank-fanshawe

Website: https://www.kiwibank.co.nz/business-banking/
Address: Level 3/155-167 Fanshawe Street, Auckland Central
Contact: 0800 113 355
Schedule: Mon – Fri: 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Kiwibank wears its local ownership like a badge of honour, and for good reason. They market themselves as being “home for the long haul,” which resonates if you want to keep your profits within the local economy.

Their 20-minute online onboarding for registered companies is incredibly slick. It removes the headache of long appointments and endless forms.

I also love the “QuickPay+” feature, which turns your iPhone into a payment terminal without needing extra hardware. This is 100% New Zealand-owned, which feels good to support.

However, their support hours are a bit of a letdown. The business banking team is only on the phones Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

If you have a crisis on a Saturday, you are out of luck until Monday morning. Despite that, their data integration for lending decisions is fast, often providing answers in minutes.

Pros

  • Wide range of borrowing options
  • QuickPay tap to pay on iPhone
  • Notice Saver and Call accounts
  • Access to expert economic insights

Cons

  • Phone support is Mon-Fri only
