Then came the sensors, cameras and monitoring plans. Choosing a setup for a home is tricky enough, let alone one for a shop or stockroom.
So I looked into local installers to find the best alarm system in Auckland for different properties. Here are several options worth a closer look.
How much does an alarm system cost in Auckland?
Basic DIY kits cost around NZ$250–$900. A standard professionally installed home alarm usually costs NZ$1,200–$1,500.
Smart or wireless systems cost about NZ$2,000–$3,500+. Adding CCTV can increase the price by NZ$1,200–$4,500.
App-based self-monitoring ranges from free to NZ$100 a year. Standard 24/7 professional monitoring costs NZ$25–$50 a month. Premium live video monitoring starts at NZ$80 a month.

Kiwi Alarms caught my eye because it designs systems around each property.
This NZ-owned company has installed more than 24,000 custom systems for homes and businesses. It works with Paradox and Ajax equipment, and can service older alarms from other brands.
I like having a choice between alerts sent to my phone and professional monitoring for burglary, fire and panic signals.
Its monitored service runs 24/7 too, with staff who can check the property under the response instructions you’ve arranged.
However, Kiwi Alarms’ standard office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Weekday-only operations may inconvenience customers who work standard hours.

It’s also a great bonus that its technicians can service most major alarm brands, including systems they didn’t install.
Smartphone control is available on compatible setups, while month-to-month professional monitoring starts at $35 plus GST.
Do note that there are a couple of costs to check before giving the night watch a night off. Guard call-outs cost extra, and Garrison states a shorter warranty for wireless equipment than for hard-wired gear.

Plenty of alarm companies default to a full replacement, but that’s not what Kiwi Security do. I really appreciate that the company is willing to work with what’s already installed, keeping the components and cabling that still function.
The team services brands such as Bosch and Paradox and can reuse some components and cabling during an upgrade. That’s handy when your old system still has useful life in it.
Kiwi Security also offers landline-free monitoring and a free app for checking alarm activity and alerts. There’s no annual admin fee too, so that’s one less charge to keep track of.
The catch is a 50% deposit when you accept the quote, with the balance due on installation. If you choose monitoring, check the contract: its terms describe automatic 12-month renewals and require three months’ written notice to end a term.

The 30-day money-back guarantee on its alarm installations adds another layer of peace of mind. It takes some of the worry out of choosing a system.
Just note that the Agility 4 only supports up to 32 detectors, including eight camera detectors, so a sprawling site may need another setup.
With self-monitoring, you’ll be the one checking the photos and deciding who to call.
