We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Authenticity and Flavour: We looked for restaurants that deliver true, vibrant Thai flavours. This means finding places that balance sweet, sour, salty, and spicy, whether it's in a classic curry or a unique, regional dish.

Menu Variety and Uniqueness: While Pad Thai is a classic, we prioritised spots offering unique signature dishes or specialty drinks, and a wide range of options, including authentic street food or hard-to-find recipes.

Quality of Service and Atmosphere: A great meal is about the whole experience. We considered the friendliness of the staff, and the overall vibe or ambience of the dining room, including casual takeaways and upscale dining rooms.

Value and Convenience: We assessed whether the price matches the portion size and quality. We also looked at convenience factors like online ordering and takeaway efficiency.

Craving the amazing flavours of Thailand right here in Auckland? Mount Roskill and its nearby suburbs have some incredible hidden gems.

If you’re hunting for a quick, spicy Pad Thai or a rich Massaman curry that transports you to Bangkok, you don’t have to travel far.

We’ve been eating our way through the area to find the absolute best Thai restaurants in and near Mount Roskill, covering everything from cozy takeaways to vibrant eateries.

This list is for all our fellow foodies looking for their next great Thai meal.

How much does Thai food cost in and near Mount Roskill?

You can find great value around Mount Roskill. A quick and satisfying lunch special, like a Pad Thai or Green Curry, will usually set you back between $15 and $20.

For a more substantial dinner, expect main dishes to range from $20 to $30, depending on your choice of protein (seafood and duck are often a bit more).

If you’re planning a full fine-dining experience with appetisers, mains, drinks and desserts (if available), you might budget around $60 to $100 per person for a really special night out.

1. Makiin Thai

Address: 124A White Swan Road, Mount Roskill, Auckland

Contact: 09 626 2244, 021 267 6124, [email protected]

Schedule: Mon 3:00 PM – 09:00 PM, Tues-Sat 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Must-Try: Duck Noodles Soup

Makiin Thai is all about authentic, smile-inducing comfort food. This is my go-to for a “pick me up” meal, especially their homemade specialties.

The menu has classics, but the real magic is in dishes like the “Hell Fried Rice,” which uses their own chili paste and has a serious kick.

When I last visited, I finally tried the Duck Noodles Soup, and the rich, herbal broth was incredible. I also love that you can customise the spice level on most dishes.

You can ask for “Thai Hot,” and believe me, they will deliver.

One small thing to remember is that rice isn’t included with most mains, so you have to order it on the side. It’s a minor detail for food this good.

Pros

  • Authentic Thai comfort food
  • Customizable spice levels (Mild to “Thai Hot”)
  • Unique menu with homemade pastes
  • Specialty Thai iced teas and coffee

Cons

  • Rice must be ordered separately for most mains
  • Closed on Sundays

Our fav small local Thai spot – get the crispy roast duck (ped grab) must order if yoh love big flavours and textures. Overall really good food, haven’t found a dish we don’t like yet! Will be coming back for sure

– Kayc Hilihetule, Google Review

There’s good Thai food, and there’s exceptional Thai food, the food at this place is exceptional. We didn’t go for your usual green curry or pad Thai, and instead decided to try something new. All three dishes we ordered were fantastic, authentic flavours, big portions. We will be back!

Schedule: Mon 4:00 PM – 9:30 PM, Wed-Sun 12:00 PM – 9:30 PM

Must-Try: Gaeng Massaman

Thai Kitchen is a local treasure that feels like it’s built on generations of family passion.

You can taste the experience of Head Chef Anong Poungkhajohn, who has over a decade in the craft. What really sets this place apart is the incredible range of options.

You’re not just choosing chicken or beef. They offer duck, lamb, scallops, and mussels for most mains.

I was amazed by the five different types of fried rice. The Tom Yum Fried Rice, in particular, is a game-changer.

It’s primarily a takeaway, but the quality is top-notch.

My only gripe is that they are not available on Tuesdays, so you might have to consider this for weekday dining.

Pros

  • Head Chef with 10+ years of experience
  • Strong focus on family-tradition flavours
  • Extensive protein options (duck, lamb, seafood)
  • Unique specialties like Tom Yum Fried Rice

Cons

  • Closed on Tuesdays

Best halal Thai foods in Auckland!!! I loved beef padthai and thai fried rice, they are super yummy!!! Also, the staff is very friendly and fast service👍

– Nuke Martiarini, Google Review

My wife and I live on the north shore, and Thai kitchen is still worth drive! Generous portions of fantastic food, excellent staff, and ecologically friendly packaging. There is nothing to not like about this place. It’s a local treasure.

Must-Try: BBQ Scallops

Narmthong is where you go when you want to try something truly special and signature.

Their menu is packed with unique dishes you won’t find elsewhere, especially in the “Narmthong Signature” and “Fish Lover” sections.

They make a big deal about their homemade and secret sauces, and you can absolutely taste the difference. I tried the B.B.Q Scallops, and the “Narm Thong secret sauce” was complex and delicious.

They also have authentic regional eats like E-Sarn Sausage, which is a must-try for adventurous eaters. The whole vibe feels more upscale than a standard takeaway, making it a great choice for a flavourful sit-down dinner.

Just remember they aren’t open for lunch and are closed all day on Tuesdays, so you’ll need to plan your visit for the evening.

Pros

  • Dedicated “Narmthong Signature Dishes” menu
  • Use of unique homemade and secret sauces
  • Extensive “Fish Lover” section with whole fish options
  • Offers regional dishes like E-Sarn Sausage

Cons

  • Closed all day on Tuesdays
  • Only open for dinner service

I have been here a few times but never posted a review before. Lovely food. Very tasty and flavourful. Spring rolls, curry puffs, prawn Penang curry, spicy fried rice, pad Thai and steamed rice. Portion size was meh but this is not your regular Chinese takeaway so don’t expect the same. Overall great food and good service

– Charles Misquitta, Google Review

Not everyday the food looks exactly like the pictures in the menu and not that really matters but it tasted as amazing as it looked. I had the penang curry and golden prawns. The portions were a decent size and value for the price. We went for an early dinner so there wasn’t a lot of other people but the atmosphere was relaxed and warm.

Website: https://www.plathong.co.nz/

Address: 609 Mount Eden Road, Auckland

Contact: 09 630 1000, [email protected]

Schedule: Mon-Sun 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Must-Try: Red Whisky Prawns

Pla Thong is not your average Thai takeaway. It’s a proper fine-dining experience, well-suited for a special date night or anniversary.

The menu is designed by a top-class, award-winning chef, Somsak Jantarose, and it shows. The ambience is elegant, with traditionally dressed staff and high-class service.

When I went, I splurged on the Red Whisky Prawns, and the presentation and flavour were both impeccable. It felt like a real treat.

They even have a curated wine list to match the food.

Be warned, the venue itself is quite small and intimate, seating only about 30 people, so booking is absolutely essential.

Pros

  • Thai fine dining experience
  • Award-winning chef with 35 years of experience
  • Elegant decor and high-class service
  • Curated wine list to match meals

Cons

  • Very small venue (seats 25-30)
  • Higher price point (fine dining)

Food presentation, food serving, ambience, service, menu, price – everything is perfect. I tried one of their Chef’s Recommendation. Photo – Red Whiskey Prawns. Tastes really good and spiciness is just right. (Spicy Level: Mild.) Their staff is friendly and helpful. Will definitely come back.

– Mary Vergara, Google Review

My experience was great! The food was yum and it was so nicely done! I’ve been to alot of Thai restaurants but this one beats the quality of food and service by far! Didn’t wait long to get served of food either! Would recommend dining at this place for anyone33!

5. Kiss Kiss Eatery

Website: https://www.kisskisseatery.com/

Address: 1 Rocklands Avenue, Balmoral, Auckland

Contact: 09 600 3076, [email protected]

Schedule: Mon-Wed 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Thu 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM & 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Fri 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM & 5:00 PM – 9:30 PM, Sat 12:00 PM – 9:30 PM, Sun 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Must-Try: Thai Style Pork Ribs

If you want a fun and vibrant night out, Kiss Kiss is the place.

It’s less of a traditional Thai restaurant and more of a cool Asian fusion spot inspired by Thai street food. The social, buzzing atmosphere draws groups of friends.

They have a fantastic bar menu with tap beers, buckets, and cocktails. The food is made for sharing.

We ordered a bunch of things, but the Thai Style Pork Ribs were the absolute standout and were incredibly full of flavour.

The Pad Thai is also a crowd-pleaser.

It’s a popular spot, so it can get busy, and parking in Balmoral is notoriously tricky. Also, they don’t open for lunch early in the week (Mon-Wed), so it’s more of an evening and weekend vibe.

Pros

  • Fun, vibrant, and social atmosphere
  • Thai-inspired street food and Asian fusion menu
  • Full bar with cocktails and tap beer
  • Offers catering, food truck, and venue hire

Cons

  • Limited free parking in the area
  • No lunch service from Monday to Wednesday
  • Can be very loud when busy

Delicious food and friendly, flawless service! Highly recommended! The Thai-style pork ribs and chicken skewers were full of flavor, while the crispy chicken rice and Pad Thai are generously portioned – perfect for sharing. The roti and pork bun were also a hit. Portions were so generous we couldn’t finish everything and took the rest home ($1 takeaway box). The only downside is the limited free parking. Overall, an ideal spot to enjoy delicious, authentic fusion Thai dishes in a relaxed, casual setting with friends or family.

A must try food, love their Pad Thai and sticky rice with mango (my favorite, thanks to @LucelleFoodie for introducing this resto to us) and also thanks to the staff working this Thursday for being so friendly and accomodating.
