Your Guide to the Best Counselling Services in Auckland

best-counselling-services-auckland
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Qualifications and Ethics: We ensured that each practice is staffed by registered professionals adhering to strict ethical codes. This guarantees a safe and highly confidential environment for your healing process.
  • Accessibility and Inclusivity: Finding a therapist who understands your cultural background or speaks your primary language is vital. We prioritized clinics offering multilingual support and culturally grounded approaches.
  • Affordability and Funding Options: Therapy shouldn’t be a financial burden, so we looked at practices offering sliding scale fees or government subsidies. We also highlighted providers accepting Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) funding.
  • Treatment Approaches: Every individual responds differently to therapy, making a variety of evidence-based methods essential. We selected services that tailor their therapeutic frameworks to meet your specific emotional needs.

Reaching out for help is a brave step, and finding the right support makes all the difference. If you’re looking for anxiety counseling or seeking guidance with a partner through marriage counselling, the city offers a wealth of compassionate professionals.

To help you navigate your options, I have explored the best counselling services in Auckland, focusing on those offering a warm and profoundly human approach to care. Find your safe space to heal here.

Address: 22 Alexander Ave, Papatoetoe / 101 Carruth Road, Papatoetoe

Contact: (09) 277-9324

Hours: Monday – Friday: 8 am – 7:30 pm

Navigating the aftermath of a traumatic experience requires an immediate and highly supportive response. Thankfully, Counselling Services Centre offers a 24/7 crisis service for survivors of sexual harm and trauma.

They have spent nearly four decades building deep roots in the Counties Manukau community, ensuring that care remains culturally appropriate and deeply respectful.

The centre also provides fully funded therapy for ACC Sensitive Claims, removing the financial barriers that often prevent individuals from seeking help. Their staff can conduct sessions in languages like Samoan and Hindi, ensuring that non-English speakers feel fully understood.

However, their primary dedication to trauma and crisis response might make them less suitable if you’re seeking general life coaching. Despite this narrow focus, their unwavering commitment to respect makes them a safe harbor for those in deep distress.

Pros

  • 24/7 crisis response availability
  • Fully funded ACC Sensitive Claims sessions
  • Services available in multiple languages
  • Nearly 40 years of community trust

Cons

  • Primarily focused on severe trauma
  • May not suit general life coaching needs

process was quick and easy

The whole booking process was quick and easy. I found a therapist I felt would be a good fit on the site. Then I called and left a voicemail asking for this therapist and for the day/time I wanted. When the front office called back, they had already confirmed the therapist and time was available. My session was three days later. I’ve been seeing her for a month now and everything is going great. Thx for making something tough a little easier!

Address: 15A Norman Spencer Drive

Contact: (09) 280 4064

Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm

Finding a therapist who genuinely understands your cultural background can fundamentally change your healing journey. Sahaayta Counselling Services focuses heavily on supporting South Asian migrant families, offering a holistic space that respects unique family dynamics.

A close friend of mine talked to their Hindi-speaking counselors during a difficult life transition, and she felt an immediate sense of relief in being understood in her native language.

Beyond one-on-one sessions, they run community programs like anger management and women’s groups to foster broader social wellbeing.

Plus, they operate on a sliding fee scale and assist with government subsidies, making mental health care far more accessible for newcomers to Auckland.

While their niche focus on the South Asian community is a massive strength, it might feel slightly exclusive if you fall outside that demographic. Regardless, their deep commitment to multilingual care provides a vital lifeline for many families.

Pros

  • Culturally specific South Asian support
  • Multilingual counselling options
  • Sliding scale fees available
  • Additional community and educational workshops

Cons

  • Niche focus may not appeal to everyone
  • Less tailored for general counseling seekers

staff were empathetic

I spent 4 weeks here and can’t speak highly enough of the staff there and the support provided. With 24×7 service the staff were empathetic and genuinely loved their ministry. Standouts for me were Deo and Christina who always provided a listening ear and went above and beyond

both welcoming and helpful

I’ve been consistently attending counselling here with Stephen Yao for the past 3 and a half months, and it has been the most strengthening thing I’ve ever done! He is a great therapist, who has helped me not only process my inner struggles, character flaws, etc. But also be free to assert who I am in a healthy way that has let me build off what I understand about myself. I want to commend PCC for being a place that is both welcoming and helpful and would recommend anyone going through grief, depression or any other mental issue to seek them out 🙏🏽

Address: Auckland Central branch – 80 College Hill, Freemans Bay, 1011

Contact: +6421720889

Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm

Sometimes, true healing requires digging past surface-level symptoms to understand the deeper patterns shaping your life. Conscious Counselling does so with an integrative psychotherapy model, weaving together methods like Narrative Therapy and Hakomi.

The practice views wellbeing through a whole-person lens, connecting your physical sensations with your emotional experiences for profound long-term growth.

When I attended an online session here to work through some lingering anxiety, the practitioner’s pacing felt incredibly safe and respectful of my emotional limits.

Clients also appreciate the flexibility of choosing between serene in-person sessions in Freemans Bay or secure video calls from home.

As for the downsides, because this is a single-practitioner service focused strictly on adult individuals, you will need to look elsewhere if you require couples therapy or child counseling.

Pros

  • Integrative psychotherapy approach
  • Connects physical and emotional well-being
  • Flexible online and in-person formats
  • Focuses on deep personal growth

Cons

  • Limited entirely to adult individuals
  • Single practitioner means limited availability

creates a comfortable, safe space

Over the past few months Guy has been absolutely exceptional in his approach to helping me with a number of issues. He is a great listener, and creates a comfortable, safe space to explore ideas and work through problems. With just a couple of sessions, I’ve felt a huge improvement in my day to day life and am really grateful for all the help he’s provided. Cheers Guy!

My experience of treatment with Guy has been entirely beneficial and worthwhile. I would absolutely recommend him without hesitation.

I always felt safe and comfortable in his space.

Gary was so patient, understanding, and down-to-earth. He made it easy for us to talk openly, and I always felt safe and comfortable in his space. There was never any judgment — just genuine care, support, and guidance. I’m really grateful for the positive impact he’s had in mine/our lives. Thank you, Gary, for your kindness and for creating such a safe space — I couldn’t recommend you enough.

his very helpful methods has allowed us to regain our understanding

Highly recommend Garey’s relationship counselling. We were in a longterm bad cycle that we were unable to escape on our own. Time with Garey and his very helpful methods has allowed us to regain our understanding of one another and return to a happy marriage. Very worthwhile.
