But after years of chasing thrills – hiking in Bali, ziplining in Queenstown – I realised I haven’t fully explored my own backyard yet.
Sure, I know where to find the best dumplings in Dominion Road and where to find the best photo spots near the Harbour Bridge. But the real stories? The hidden gems? I’m pretty embarrassed to call myself a local at this point.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been booking tour guide packages here and there. A few were free, others were more luxurious, and a handful had me hiking up volcanoes! Bottom line is, you’ll find the best of them here – all from firsthand experience!
How much do tours cost in Auckland?
The cost of a tour in Auckland starts at $500 for a 6-hour tour involving 1 to 3 participants. A package for 4 to 16 people ranges from $700 to $900. Private luxury tours cost more.

Services from Black Car Transfers & Tours focus on luxury touring, so I immediately had high expectations. True to what most say, they take care of clients in the best possible way.
One of the things I liked was the communication. They send messages before pick-up promptly, giving me enough time to get my stuff together. I was greeted warmly and respectfully upon meeting the driver.
The tour across Auckland was amazing. We visited iconic destinations such as Hobbiton, Waitomo Caves, and Rotorua. However, I did wish there were more default locations that are less tourist-y.
I did like that I could customise my stops and itinerary. If you’re a small, private group, you can expect the same treatment.
The commentary on the history and significance of each stop was fun to listen to. My tour guide was enthusiastic, so I can see how this company would work with families with kids.
I do have to admit that paying for this tour did hurt, as it was quite expensive. That said, if you’re booking as a group, you can split the fees amongst yourselves (it still wouldn’t be cheap, just saying).

Right off the bat, I can see why many love Auckland & Beyond Tours. They just keep it simple – their tour guides are personable and friendly, so it’s easy to chat with them for questions and requests.
Even the cultural commentaries on each stop were full of humour. I can’t see why this energy won’t be helpful in long, tiring, full-day tours.
Sadly, though, if you want to request a specific guide for the tour, it may not always be possible.
What makes them different from most, though, is the level of care they offer. During the tour, they suggested other sightseeing options and even stopped for coffee breaks and ice cream.
This level of care begins with their communication. When they picked me up, they were just right on time, and I could feel just how careful the driver was in navigating the roads.
The vehicle itself was just divine. They use Mercedes-Benz vans for all their tours, so you’re really travelling in style. WiFi, leather seats, bottled water – they’re all there.
If there’s one observation, travellers seeking fast-paced or large-group experiences may have to check elsewhere. This company is more ideal for small, customised tours.

3. Auckland Free Walking Tours

Even without the luxury of premium cars, Auckland Free Walking Tours still ensured a memorable experience. They’re friendly and inclusive – during my tour dates, I’ve seen all types of travellers, including families, solo travellers, and new residents.
One of the major things I loved is how personalised the suggestions are. Recommendations include spots like cafes and restaurants. I found this helpful for local orientation.
When I booked a tour with them, the entire process online was seamless. Of course, the time is strict, as there are no other options other than 10:00 AM. This works for solo players or a small friend group.
Just take note that groups of over 7 people need to book a private tour.
As for the tour itself, the duration is just right to really absorb the stops. Key destinations include many iconic areas in the city, covering landmarks, modern culture, and social insights.
I did have a great time on this tour despite not being among the fancy options. There are limitations, though, considering the nature of the tours. Group sizes are limited, it’s weather-dependent, and it’s not ideal for those with mobility conditions.

4. Wild Kiwi Adventure Tours

Wild Kiwi might be my best pick when it comes to both structure and flexibility. I liked that there are organised itineraries, while still giving me the option to choose the activities.
From the onset, I was treated to an awesome selection of adventure tours. Had to drag some friends as they’re made for small groups, and we all agreed that the trip was worth the money.
Premium tours are also available for those who need top-notch accommodation. I’ve yet to check the packages out, but I like that it’s an option when needed.
And because most of the tours are adventurous, it’s definitely a plus that the guides are safe and confident drivers. Winding mountain roads was easy-peasy for them – I got to enjoy the scenic routes with peace of mind.
If there’s another thing worth noting, it’s their adaptability. I experienced some weather difficulties and road closures during the trip. They adjusted the itinerary like nothing happened.
Cons? Well, the tours are definitely expensive. I also heard some complaints about the poor refund process, though most of these had arisen during the pandemic period only.

“I can’t recommend Wild Kiwi enough. Both guides I had for the Big South trip were fantastic, helpful, and fun! Claudia had so much passion for New Zealand, and Tom was super informative about every place we visited. We saw so much of the South Island and all activities were optional, so was easy to be adventurous or have a quieter day if that’s what you needed. The bus journeys might be long but the views were spectacular, and there’s lots of stops along the way. I’d recommend this to anyone, but in particular solo travellers, it was a great way to meet new people and make friends whilst exploring this beautiful country.”

First Light Travel does pretty much anything. I like them for custom tours, as they make it easy to craft experiences based on interests, budget, and pace.
For more specific tours, the range of options is also great. They offer self-driver tours, private guided holidays, and family adventures.
When I booked an option with them, I was happy with how seamless everything felt. Booking online was a breeze, and they communicated details to me within the hour. I was picked up at the airport, and even that felt stress-free.
I do love the balance between pre-planned activities and free time. For people who don’t like worrying about logistics, like me, while still enjoying a bit of freedom, this is a great start.
They have a team of Kiwi experts, so there’s always firsthand commentary on each destination. They’re able to recommend quality accommodations and hidden gems, too, which I appreciate.
The only issue is that popular travel seasons book out early, so there’s no guarantee you can secure a package. Advanced reservations are recommended, though I understand how the lack of flexibility can be frustrating.
