We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
To find the best of the best, we focused on the complete dining experience. Here’s what we looked for: Food Quality & Authenticity: We looked for places using fresh, high-quality ingredients and offering authentic flavours. This means a curry that tastes like it's straight from India or fish and chips that are perfectly fresh and crispy. Atmosphere & Vibe: A great restaurant provides a complete experience. We prioritised spots that felt welcoming, from the best cafés for brunch and family-friendly bistros for dinner to casual takeaways for the beach. Service & Convenience: We value great service from friendly, attentive staff. We also looked at modern conveniences that make life easier, like online ordering, reliable delivery options, and how easy it is to book a table. Value for Money: This isn't just about being cheap. It's about what you get for the price. We assessed whether the portion sizes, ingredient quality, and overall dining experience felt worth the money.

Must-Try: Chicken Madras

Brothers Bar & Eatery is your go-to for an authentic Indian culinary journey right in Mairangi Bay. They nail both the traditional dishes and some cool modern takes.

The atmosphere is a real standout. It’s super warm and inviting, with elegant decor that makes it feel a bit special, but still relaxed.

I tried the Chicken Madras on a recommendation, and it was incredible. The flavour in the sauce was deep and rich, not just hot. This makes it a great choice for a flavourful Saturday night dinner.

They also have handy mobile apps for ordering, which is a great touch. Just remember that the restaurant is closed on Mondays, so you’ll have to get your curry fix on another day of the week.

Pros

  • Authentic Indian cuisine
  • Multiple service options (dine-in, takeaway, delivery)
  • “Order Online” feature and mobile apps
  • “Reservations” option available

Cons

  • Can get busy on weekends (booking advised)
  • Not available on Mondays

Customer Reviews

I have been twice now and the food is excellent, chicken Madras is particularly good, great flavour in the sauces and very reasonably priced. Also lovely waitress.

Super authentic tasty food; sizzling platter with fluffy, flavoured naans. Dined in with pre-cocktails (during happy hour!) Perfect little spot with a great new vibe. Looking forward to trying more dishes.

Must-Try: Lamb Shank

Montrose serves as a versatile all-day spot for the neighbourhood. It shifts from a bright, bustling café in the morning to a cozy, elegant bistro at night.

Their “Real food, Real service” philosophy is shown in their use of locally sourced ingredients for their brunch dishes.

I stopped by for their afternoon High Tea, which felt special with its beautiful selection of savouries and sweets. It’s a fantastic place to catch up with friends or family.

While they’re fully licensed, they also offer a BYOW (Bring Your Own Wine) night, which is a great perk.

Unfortunately, it’s only available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so you have to plan ahead if you want to bring your own special bottle for the weekend.

Pros

  • Versatile (café, bistro, bar)
  • Special High Tea service (2-5 pm)
  • Uses locally sourced ingredients
  • Flexible function and catering options

Cons

  • BYOW option is limited to Wed/Thu only

Customer Reviews

Very cozy place. You can enjoy local artist’s works. Their roast lamb is really good. The staff are very friendly and caring.

Absolutely beautiful and delicious meal. I got the meatballs – which were presented very well. Great service and a positive atmosphere on top of that. Would definitely recommend to anybody who is looking for a good meal

Must-Try: Peperone Pizza

Calimero stands apart from other pizza places by specialising in unique Brazilian pizzas that are a must-try. Flavours like the Frango Catupiry are a delicious change of pace from the usual.

They also run their own delivery service, using their own drivers. I found this made a huge difference. My Peperone pizza arrived way faster and hotter than when I’ve used third-party apps from other places.

They have a huge menu with heaps of options to customise, which is fantastic.

With so many choices, it’s a great spot for ordering with a group. Even picky eaters will find something to love.

If you want their food for catering, do take note that their packages require a two-day advance notice, which can be a bit limiting for last-minute plans.

Pros

  • Unique Brazilian pizza menu
  • Fast in-house delivery service (not third-party)
  • Extensive menu (Traditional, Gourmet, etc.)
  • Pizza customisation (extra toppings, stuffed crust)

Cons

  • Catering packages require a two-day advance notice

Customer Reviews

Excellent pizza. It still tastes good when you’re on your final slices when it gets cooler. You can really taste the ingredients and their freshness.

My favourite place on the shore to get pizza from, and arguably their best branch! The pizza is always incredible, they use the freshest ingredients and I love the bases. The best staff, service and my go-to takeaway spot. I’ve tried almost every flavour and you can’t go wrong. 5 stars always!!!

Pattaya Thai Cuisine

Fri: 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Sat & Sun: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, 4:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Must-Try: Green Curry

Pattaya Thai delivers that “gourmet” Thai experience, focusing on high-quality ingredients and that perfect, harmonious balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy.

The restaurant emphasises warm, Thai hospitality. It’s an atmosphere you feel when you’re there.

I ordered the Green Curry, and it was one of the best I’ve had on the Shore. It was creamy, aromatic, and packed with fresh vegetables.

They also make it super easy to order online with their own apps.

My only small gripe is their split service hours. They close for an hour and a half in the afternoon on most days, so if you want a very late lunch around 3:30 PM, you will find them closed.

Pros

  • Authentic gourmet Thai flavours
  • Dedicated mobile apps for ordering
  • Good vegetarian and gluten-free options
  • Online takeaway ordering system

Cons

  • Split service hours (closes mid-afternoon)

Customer Reviews

First time trying this place after moving into the area. Ordered a hot red duck curry takeaway. Took about 15 minutes. It was so good! Lots of vegetables, a whole breast cut up on top and actually spicy! Came with rice so very well priced for $24, especially for the duck serving. Woman on counter super friendly. Will be back!

Had vegan red curry and a vegan stir fry satay. The red curry Had lots of aroma and flavour. Definitely the best I’ve had in northshore!

The peanut sauce in the satay stir fry was quite sweet and could do with some peanut bits in it however didn’t take away too much from the overall experience. Thanks for the good food! Will be back for more curry! 🙂

Must-Try: Burger & Chips

You can’t live near the beach without a top-tier local “chippy,” and Mairangi Bay Fisheries is exactly that.

They focus on high-quality, sustainable seafood, and you can taste the difference. This makes it a great spot to grab a parcel and head down to the beach.

I had a burger and chips from there that was fantastic, featuring a generous-sized burger and perfectly crisp chips.

They are open seven days a week, which is a massive bonus for those last-minute cravings.

It’s definitely my new go-to for a classic beachside feed, and an absolute must-visit if you’re in the area. However, it’s worth noting that it can be very busy on sunny evenings.

Pros

  • Open 7 days a week
  • High-quality, sustainable seafood focus
  • Locally sourced ingredients
  • Online ordering and mobile apps available

Cons

  • Can be very busy on sunny evenings

Very affordable and delicious!!! My uncle is super picky, but he loves their fish and chips. The owner and the staff are all very friendly.

Best lunch on the Shore, I travel from Wairau Valley to get a great lunch at a fantastic price!!! The food is fantastic!
Where else can you get a burger like this? Where else can you eat it with a view like this???
