Best Restaurants on Albert Street, Auckland: From Fine Dining to Rooftop Glam

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
Vibe & Atmosphere: First impressions count. Is this a spot for a noisy group, a quiet date, or a lightning-fast solo lunch? I looked for places that feel welcoming and fit their purpose. Food Quality & Must-Try Dish: This is the big one. I judged places on flavour, freshness, and execution, especially of their signature dishes. Is the food memorable? Value for Money: This isn't just about being cheap; it's about feeling like you got your money's worth. I considered portion size, ingredient quality, and the overall experience relative to the price. Service & What Makes Them Stand Out: Good service can make a meal. I also looked for the special features that make a restaurant stand out from the crowd.

Albert Street isn’t just one of the busiest thoroughfares in Auckland’s CBD; it’s a surprisingly diverse culinary hotspot.

It’s my go-to strip whether I’m dashing out for a quick (but delicious) work lunch, planning a sophisticated dinner, or just exploring with friends.

But let’s be honest, “Where should we eat?” can be a tough question. The options range from hidden food court gems to chic, upscale bistros.

If you’re a local professional, a visitor, or just a hungry foodie, I’ve got you covered.

I’ve eaten my way up and down the street to put together this list of the 5 must-try restaurants on Albert Street, Auckland.

How much does dining cost on Albert Street?

Dining on Albert Street can fit most budgets, depending on what you’re after.

Based on my experience, you can expect to pay around NZ$19 to NZ$40 for a main meal at most local restaurants. If you’re treating yourself to a more fine-dining experience, mains will likely start from NZ$30 and go up.

For a good, hearty pub-style meal, you’ll be looking at about NZ$30 for a main. As for drinks, a glass of wine usually sits between NZ$9 and $15, and a beer will cost you about the same.

Schedule: Mon-Sun: 6:30 AM-10:30 AM, 12:00 PM-3:00 PM, 5:00 PM-10:00 PM

Must-Try: Steak Frites

Bistro Saine is your spot for that perfect, classic neighbourhood bistro feel, but elevated.

The moment I walked in, it felt both timeless and modern, with a sophisticated but unstuffy atmosphere. The focus here is on comforting dishes where high-quality, local ingredients are the real stars.

Their philosophy is all about “provenance,” and you can seriously taste it in their food.

I went for their must-try Steak Frites on a friend’s recommendation, and it was exceptional, with perfectly cooked steak and a generous pile of crispy, golden fries.

The staff also did an amazing job pairing a wine for me, which really completed the meal.

It’s an ideal choice for a long lunch meeting or a romantic dinner.

Just a heads-up: if you’re planning a morning meeting, their breakfast menu is listed as being for Hotel Indigo’s “in-house guests only,” so you’ll have to aim for lunch or dinner.

Pros

  • Focus on local NZ producers
  • Seasonally changing menu
  • Classic dishes with integrity
  • Excellent wine list

Cons

  • Breakfast is for hotel in-house guests only

Customer Reviews

We’ve been here twice now, and both times were fantastic! The food is absolutely delicious, and the wine list offers an amazing variety.

The staff are attentive and friendly, and Pierre did an excellent job pairing the wines with our food. Outstanding service all around. Will definitely be back.

I could not fault this restaurant. Went 4 times over my stay at the hotel. Ate breakfasts, dinner with champagne and extra cocktails. The food was amazing, especially liked the small details of the cabbage gratin and créme caramel was another favourite dish. The service the best. I also ate two breakfasts, the salmon toast was so good with a caper créme fraiche sauce I added scrambled egg, and the potato gratin with bacon too. I look forward to visiting again.

Schedule:

Must-Try: Trevally Oka, Coconut, Chilli, Taro, Mango

Trivet is built for social, sharing-style meals.

The concept is fantastic: it blends global flavours (with a nod to Polynesian cuisine) using the best local produce from Aotearoa.

Being open seven days a week makes it a reliable all-day spot.

The moment you walk in, the vibe is warm, earthy, and welcoming; it really does feel like a “home away from home.”

We went as a group and ordered a bunch of plates to share, which is definitely the way to go.

The absolute standout was the Trevally oka; it was so fresh and vibrant with coconut, chilli, and mango. The slow-cooked lamb was a close second, just falling off the bone.

It’s an amazing place for a group catch-up or a date.

We did ask about their private dining space for a future birthday, but be warned, it’s very “intimate” and seats only up to six guests, so it’s not for a larger function.

Pros

  • Approachable sharing-style menu
  • Locally sourced & sustainable ingredients
  • Open 7 days (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Warm, welcoming “homey” atmosphere

Cons

  • The private dining space is very small (6 guests)

Schedule: Mon-Sun: 8:00 AM-2:00 PM

Must-Try: Eggs Benedict on Hash Brown, Hollandaise & Baby Spinach w/ Bacon

Up Cafe is a true CBD gem, especially known for its amazing catering and unique cafe offerings.

Far more than a coffee stop, it’s a fully licensed bar and event venue that earned a spot among Auckland’s top cafés in 2020.

I popped in for brunch and went straight for their Eggs Benedict on a Hash Brown. Swapping the usual English muffin for a crispy hash brown base takes it to a whole new level! It was served with perfectly cooked bacon, baby spinach, and a rich hollandaise.

The vibe is super friendly, and you can tell why they get such high praise for their service.

The main downside is their limited hours. They close at 2 PM, so it’s strictly a lunch or breakfast dining. This is a real shame because the food is so good, you’ll wish you could grab it for dinner.

Pros

  • Diverse offerings (cafe, bar, catering, events)
  • Formally recognised as a “Top Cafe”
  • Unique menu items like Koko Samoa Coffee
  • Strong reputation for friendly service

Cons

  • Limited operating hours (closes at 2 PM)

Customer Reviews

Newly arrived in Auckland and to be fully honest, Up cafe is my fav place to get breakfast; coffee before work or brunch on my day off ! Food, ambience and the staff are just A M A Z I N G ! Would recommend any one to go 🤩

Delicious food, huge portions, really fair prices, super friendly and helpful staff. 10/10 recommend and will be coming back.

Waffles are delicious! Thick, fluffy, crisp on the outside, perfect.

Galata Kebabs & Grill

Schedule: Mon: 9:30 AM-2:00 PM; Tue: 9:30 AM-3:30 PM;  Wed-Thu: 9:30 AM–8:30 PM

Must-Try: Chicken Kebab

Galata is where you go for genuinely authentic, flavour-packed Mediterranean food.

This isn’t your typical late-night kebab joint. Their grills and mezes stand out for their exceptional quality and commitment to fresh ingredients.

They have a huge menu, but the barbecue is the highlight. I grabbed their signature Chicken Kebab (the shish tawook), and the meat was so moist and tender.

You can really tell it’s been marinated properly and cooked with care over the charcoal grill, which adds a great smoky flavour.

On top of the great food, the owner is famously friendly and makes you feel instantly welcome, even when the place is chaotic.

This spot is super popular, especially around lunchtime, so be prepared for a bit of a wait during the peak rush.

It’s 100% worth it, but just factor that in if you’re in a hurry.

Pros

  • Authentic Mediterranean & grill flavours
  • Generous portion sizes
  • Incredibly friendly and speedy service
  • Wide variety (kebabs, plates, vegetarian)

Cons

  • Can have long wait times during peak lunch

Woaaa – Vietnamese Cuisine

Must-Try: Crispy Roast Pork Baguette

Tucked away in the Park Central Food Court, Woaaa is serving up some of the most authentic Vietnamese street food I’ve had in the city.

They specialise in flavours from Hoi An and Hue, and their Banh Mi is the star of the show.

What makes them different? They make their own baguettes, pâté, and mayonnaise from scratch, and you can absolutely taste the difference.

I tried the crispy roast pork baguette, and it was perfect. The baguette had a light, crisp crust, the pork was flavourful, and the fresh herbs and pickled veg cut through the richness. It’s my new favourite quick lunch escape that tastes like a mini-trip to Vietnam.

This is now a non-negotiable for my workday lunch rotation.

The only catch is that their hours are limited to weekdays. They’re closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, so you’ve got to get your Banh Mi fix Monday to Friday.

Pros

  • Authentic regional Vietnamese flavours
  • Homemade Banh Mi components
  • Focus on fresh ingredients
  • Online ordering available (Uber Eats, DoorDash)

Cons

  • Closed on weekends & public holidays
  • Located in a busy food court
