The 6 Best Preschools in Auckland for Your Child [2025 Review]

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Choosing the best preschool in Auckland is one of the first huge decisions we make as parents.

This means finding a genuine community that will nurture their budding curiosity, help them grow into confident little people, and get them ready for the big adventure of primary school.

It’s all about finding that perfect fit: a place where your child feels safe, happy, and genuinely excited to learn every single day.

Auckland is home to a fantastic range of options, from bustling centres with all the bells and whistles to smaller, boutique kindergartens with a super close-knit feel. The sheer number of choices can feel a bit overwhelming, which is why we’ve done the legwork for you.

To help you sort through it all, we’ve put together a list of some of the best preschools in the city, based on what truly matters to families.

How much do preschools cost in Auckland?

Alright, let’s talk numbers. What’s the damage for preschool in Auckland? Honestly, the cost really varies depending on the type of centre, the hours you need, and your child’s age. The good news is that the government helps out with 20 hours of free early childhood education (ECE) per week for all three- and four-year-olds, which makes a massive difference to the wallet.

On top of that, you might also be eligible for a Childcare Subsidy from Work and Income (WINZ), so it’s definitely worth checking if you qualify. For any hours beyond the free 20, or for kids under three, you’ll be paying out of pocket. As a rough guide, a larger, full-time daycare centre might charge around $200 a week for an older child (after the 20 free hours) or closer to $300 for a younger one. Smaller community preschools could be about $7 an hour, while a home-based educator might charge somewhere between $7 and $10 per hour. These fees often reflect things like lower teacher-to-child ratios, included meals, and extra resources.

Just make sure to ask about any optional extras, like fees for stationery, special activities, or tech, so you don’t get any surprises on your invoice.

Right away when you enter you notice the space is very bright and spacious with lots of natural light and has very creative play areas. The connected outdoor space is very lovely too. The teachers are very attentive, caring and passionate and we have fully trust them with his preschool education. Our son always looks forward to going there, he found many friends and learnt so many new things including some words from other languages like Mandarin, Brazilian Portuguese or Maori as well as new cultural concepts. Address: 123 Saint Luke’s Road, Sandringham, Auckland 1025
Contact: 09 815 1206 / [email protected]
Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM

What I loved most about Bambinos was its genuine “home away from home” atmosphere. As soon as we walked in for a tour, the place just felt warm and secure, which instantly put me at ease.

You can really tell it’s family-owned; there’s a personal touch that comes from their 30-plus years of experience, and the teachers were so friendly and clearly passionate about what they do.

They greeted every child by name and seemed to know all the little details about their day.

Their program is based on New Zealand’s Te Whāriki curriculum, which lets kids learn through their own interests. This approach is fantastic for building confidence.

They also have a dedicated “Readiness to School” program to help the older kids feel prepared and excited for their next step.

The only real snag is their limited number of locations, so you have to be lucky enough to live or work nearby to make it a practical option.

Pros

  • Family-owned with 30+ years of experience
  • “Home away from home” environment
  • Structured Te Whāriki curriculum
  • Purpose-built, child-friendly facilities
  • Dedicated school readiness program

Cons

  • Limited locations (only three centres)
  • It may not be convenient for all families

4. Poppies Kindergarten

poppies-kindergarten

Website: https://www.poppies.co.nz/
Address: 1 Hapua Street, Remuera, Auckland 1050
Contact: 09 520 3424 / [email protected]
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:15 AM – 3:30 PM

A friend of mine sends her daughter to Poppies Kindergarten, and she absolutely raves about its small, private feel.

Since it’s licensed for only 40 kids, the teacher-to-child ratio is amazing, meaning every child gets plenty of individual attention and support.

As a fixture in the Remuera community for over 30 years, the kindergarten has deep roots and an established presence.

One of the coolest things they do is a weekly “Out and About Nature Walk,” where the kids get to explore their local community and connect with nature. My friend loves that it gets her daughter outdoors and learning in a hands-on way, no matter the weather.

As a private kindy, however, spots can be limited and the fees might be on the higher side. But for that intimate, family-like atmosphere, many parents feel it’s well worth it.

Pros

  • Small class sizes with a low teacher-to-child ratio
  • Over 30 years of experience in the community
  • Unique “Out and About” nature program
  • Strong focus on outdoor education
  • Comprehensive transition to school program

Cons

  • Limited enrollment availability
  • Potentially higher fees for a private kindy

According to parents in the area, Young World Child Care Centre creates a truly inclusive and bicultural environment.

They place a big emphasis on New Zealand’s heritage, respecting every child and family’s background, which fosters a wonderful sense of community.

The teachers are constantly praised for being incredibly nurturing and professional, taking a genuine interest in each child’s development.

Parents also love the modern touches, like the use of the Storypark app to share updates, photos, and learning stories throughout the day.  It’s such a great way to stay connected and feel like you’re part of their world, even when you’re at work.

Their approach is very play-based and child-led, which is fantastic for developing creativity.

This might not be the best fit for parents who prefer a more structured, academic setup, but for a holistic and fun learning experience, it’s a top contender.

If the Montessori method is something you’re curious about, then Remuera Montessori should definitely be on your list.

The centre is special for its unique approach, integrating the structured, hands-on learning of the Montessori philosophy with New Zealand’s play-based Te Whāriki framework.

This gives kids the best of both worlds: a structured, hands-on learning approach alongside a play-based, holistic one.

“Being a Montessori teacher myself for many years I was finding it very challenging to find a school for my child mostly due to my high expectations. I came to Remuera Montessori and was so excited to see children involved in their work and following their interests.
