We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Quality of Cupcakes: We closely evaluated the cupcakes' overall quality, focusing on texture, freshness, and consistency.

Custom Orders and Requests: We assessed how well each cupcake handled custom orders for events, themes, and dietary needs.

Pricing: We compared pricing across standard and custom cupcakes to assess overall value.

Customer Services: We took note of their responsiveness and availability. In particular, we took note of how easy it was to place orders, ask questions, or make changes.

Presentation and Packaging: We reviewed how cupcakes were packaged for transport, gifting, or special events.

Auckland has no shortage of cupcakes. You can spot them almost everywhere, from weekend markets in Grey Lynn to bakery windows in Dominion Road.

But if there’s one thing you need to know, not every cupcake is worth the wait. Some are just clearly made for photos, while others are too expensive per piece for something so dry.

That’s why we decided to dig deeper and take matters into our own hands. We asked around, listened to cafe chats, and scrolled through local communities.

After a few weeks of research and taste-testing, we finally found the best cupcake makers in Auckland. Below are the shops that are trusted by locals for all things cupcake!

How much do cupcakes cost in Auckland?

The cost of cupcakes in Auckland ranges from $16 to $120 per box of 12, depending on the type and design. Individual cupcakes typically range from $2 to $8. For certain orders, delivery fees may also apply.

1. Wildflours

Location: 6/80 Gunner Drive, Te Atatū Peninsula, Auckland 0610

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Saturday: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Website

Wildflours got our attention for their consistent flavours and textures. We love the quality of the cupcakes: soft, moist, and never overly sweet.

The keto and vegan options were also a plus, ideal for clients with dietary restrictions. The best part is that their gluten-free and dairy-free cupcakes tasted close to their traditional counterparts.

According to clients, they need little direction for custom designs. Colours, themes, and decorations were all executed cleanly without back-and-forth.

Wildflours also won our favour in terms of reliability. This is validated by several clients who had successful last-minute orders for special events.

Considering the level of customisation and quality, we find their prices reasonable. Even the packaging feels premium, making entry-level cupcakes accessible without feeling basic.

At times, they can be difficult to reach, although this isn’t a recurring issue with the shop. We also noticed popular items selling out later in the day, which limits ready-made options.

Pros

  • Consistently high-quality cupcakes
  • Excellent range of dietary options
  • Strong custom design execution
  • Friendly and reliable service
  • Reasonable pricing

Cons

  • Popular options sell out fast
  • Can be hard to call at times

Friendly staff and great service

“My favourite go to for Keto treats. The service is always really good and the staff are so friendly. I love popping in for the snickers slice or a quiche. There are other offerings available as well such as cakes, cupcakes etc and of course coffee! Unfortunately I do not have any pictures as everything was devoured before I could, and yes this happens every visit!”

Made the whole process easy

“Wildflours made my four year old sons birthday cake and cupcakes. The service was super friendly and helpful, catering to visiting children’s different dietary restrictions. The whole process was made so easy and my expectations were well and truly exceeded. The out come was an amazing looking cake and cupcakes that tasted delicious. Thank you Wildflours.”

One of the standout qualities of Petal Cupcakes’ options is their frosting. This alone is well-balanced and dense. The buttercream and cream cheese, in particular, were smooth without being heavy.

We also loved how wide the flavour rotation was. Classics like vanilla bean sat comfortably next to bolder picks like espresso and black Doris plum.

They don’t just win in flavours. Petal also delivers on presentation, with cupcakes arriving neatly decorated. Boxes are just right for gifting as well.

For special events, they also offer themed boxes.

Dietary options were also a strong point. We tried their vegan, gluten-free, and eggless cupcakes. Surprisingly, they tasted very close to standard creations.

Another thing we appreciate is their same-day delivery. For last-minute needs, this is a major plus.

While everything is up to our standards, we find that their pricing may give casual buyers pause. At around $5 per cupcake, this feels more like a treat for special events than a daily stop.

Pros

  • Excellent cupcake texture
  • Standout frosting quality
  • Wide, rotating flavor selection
  • Gift-ready presentation and packaging
  • Strong vegan and gluten-free options
  • Reliable same-day delivery

Cons

  • Relatively expensive for individual cupcakes
  • Minor issues with abrupt order cancellation

On another level

“Petal will always be my favourite cupcake shop. I used to eat them all the time during uni several years ago but due to now living in Pukekohe, it’s quite a challenge to get my normal sweet tooth fix. However last week my best friend Suprised and delivered me some, and it reminded me again of how yummy these were and how much I’ve missed visiting. Not only yummy but the texture and presentation is always on another level. If you’re a sweet tooth and love a good old cupcake, you should definitely try Petals.”

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Saturday: 9:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Website

During our visits, we noticed how hands-on Delish Cupcakes is. The owner even stayed involved, chatted easily, and didn’t hesitate to make adjustments on the spot.

The way they handle custom orders is a major win. They’re particularly popular for birthday themes, photo toppers, and gender reveal designs.

Their presentation also ticked our checkboxes. Rather than looking flashy, results also appear clean and polished. Cupcakes were well decorated without heavy icing or unnecessary extras.

Upon tasting, our team agreed that the cupcakes were fluffy and moist. Nothing tasted dry or overworked, even when taken later in the day.

Pricing is pretty accessible too. Most customers we spoke to mentioned speaking under $10 per person here, including other items.

If there’s a downside we want to comment on, it’s that some of the flavours have an overly sweet frosting. We suggest asking for recommendations if you find certain options too sweet.

Pros

  • Fresh, small-batch cupcakes
  • Huge rotating flavour selection
  • Excellent custom cupcake options
  • Strong vegan offerings
  • Friendly, owner-led service
  • Affordable pricing

Cons

  • Certain flavours are overly sweet
  • Inconsistent coffee quality

Satisfies the sugar cravings

“Some days when you just need cake, Delish Cupcakes is the place to go. If you speak nicely to Dean, he’ll even custom make your favorite cupcake! There are too many choices – all worth trying. And add a cake pop, brownie or cookies to satisfy a sugar craving 😋🐩”

Delicious and beautifully decorated

“I had ordered and had cupcakes delivered to my home. The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout the entire process. The cupcakes themselves were absolutely delicious and beautifully decorated. You get what you see and ask for. I highly recommend Delish Cupcakes for their customer service and tasty treats.”

Opening Hours: Open 24 Hours

Website

We checked out different cupcake makers in Auckland, and Bloom Cupcakes is among the ones that stood out for presentation.

Through this, we can clearly tell how much care goes into custom work. Letter cakes, number cakes, and colour-matched designs all came out perfectly balanced.

Customers also confirmed that all their requests were accommodated.

Reliability is also a major win. In fact, they’re quite known for corporate orders. They can easily handle large batches regardless of the theme and specific design.

The taste also met our standards. The bread is light, fluffy, and moist.

As for the frosting, it’s smooth and creamy. Even in more decorative pieces, the frosting never felt heavy when biting into it.

Communicating with the team was seamless. In fact, they can manage short-notice requests for birthdays or special occasions.

That said, delivery experiences may vary depending on location. Pricing also leans on the premium end, making them more in tune with gifting or events.

Pros

  • High-quality texture and taste
  • High-end presentation
  • Excellent with custom orders
  • Offers gluten-free and allergen-friendly options
  • Fast, accommodating communication
  • Can handle large-scale orders

Cons

  • Delivery experiences vary
  • Relatively higher prices

5. Bluebells Cakery

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Saturday – Sunday: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Website

One of the things we liked about Bluebells Cakery is the range of options. We particularly liked their classic flavours, including vanilla and chocolate.

There are also specialty options like tiramisu, matcha, and seasonal specials.

They win in terms of taste too. The frosting is never overwhelming, complementing the moist and flavourful bread.

The presentation was good. For special orders, cupcakes are packed neatly. They often come with flavour cards too, making them perfect as gifts.

For convenience, we have nothing but praise. Online ordering was smooth and efficient as the website is rarely down.

Pickup was quick, and the staff were friendly. They even explain flavours and give storage tips so you can store the cupcakes much longer.

The only downside is consistency. There are times when the flavours just don’t hit the right place.

Additionally, individual prices are more on the expensive end. They may be more ideal for special events than casual eating.

Pros

  • Quality cupcakes
  • Strong visual presentation
  • Wide variety of desserts
  • Vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options
  • Reliable online ordering
  • Smooth and quick pick-up
  • Excellent presentation

Cons

  • Occasional inconsistency in cupcake quality
  • Premium prices

Gave new ways to look at art

“I visited mid week to pick up a box of cupcakes – I got three flavours. The cupcakes  are well presented with a flavour card included in the box. Whilst a little expensive, the cupcakes do taste delicious. I also ordered a iced matcha latte which was made with care and tasted great – authentic matcha taste without being too sweet”

Great and friendly staff

“How good! Love the range of cup cakes and a key is to order online ahead of time including their cake sample box – a slice from each of their top cakes. Gluten free options taste great. Friendly staff. Definitely returning …they also do a take away high tea set up. Great for mums day.”
