Top 5 Clothing Alteration Services in Auckland

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Technical Versatility: We looked for tailors who can handle everything from heavy denim and leather to delicate silk and lace without damaging the fabric.

Turnaround Time: We assessed how quickly they can complete standard jobs and if they offer express services for those last-minute wardrobe emergencies.

Pricing Transparency: We prioritised businesses that provide clear, upfront quotes rather than surprising you with a hefty bill at the counter.

Fitting Consultation: We checked if the staff takes the time to pin and measure you properly, offering advice on what cuts actually suit your body shape.

Accessibility & Atmosphere: We considered the location, parking availability, and general friendliness of the shop to ensure the experience is stress-free.

Buying clothes off the rack rarely leads to a Cinderella moment. Usually, the pants drag on the floor, the waist gapes awkwardly at the back, or the sleeves swallow your hands whole.

That’s where a great tailor saves the day.

You might be trying to salvage a vintage find, fit into a wedding dress, properly stitch a hem, or simply need your work trousers to look sharp. In any case, finding the best services for clothing alteration in Auckland ensures your wardrobe fits exactly how it should.

We scoured the city to find the experts who can stitch or alter, hem, and tuck your wardrobe to perfection. Here are the top spots to get your fit just right.

How much does clothing alteration cost in Auckland?

You might be wondering what it costs to get that perfect fit in this city. Generally, the price depends heavily on the complexity of the fabric and the time required.

For a simple job, like shortening a pair of unlined trousers or jeans, you are usually looking at a cost similar to a decent brunch. This sits somewhere between $20 and $40.

However, if you need to take in the waist of a suit or reshape a dress, the price bumps up to the $45 to $75 range. This is because it involves undoing and resewing structural seams.

Formal wear is a different beast entirely. For bridal alterations or restructuring a fully lined blazer, you should expect to pay significantly more. Prices often start around $80 and easily climb into the hundreds for intricate beadwork or multiple layers.

1. Silhouette Alterations

silhouette-alterations

Website: https://www.hotcity.co.nz/business-directory/silhouette-alterations

Address: CML Building, 163 Queen Street, Auckland

Contact: 09 366 3053

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM, Sat 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Hours subject to change without notice.

Workers in the CBD will find Silhouette Alterations a convenient, high-quality option.

This shop handles high-stakes formal wear, specifically bridal and evening gowns, right in the heart of the city.

I stopped by recently to inquire about a silk shirt that needed a very delicate repair. I was impressed by how they explained the specific stitching technique they would use to hide the tear.

Instead of simply pinning and sewing, they consult with you on how the garment should drape. This approach gave me confidence that they wouldn’t rush the job.

However, keep in mind that their central location comes with a downside. Parking on Queen Street is notoriously difficult and expensive, so visiting on foot is your best bet.

Because they specialise in high-quality finishes, their pricing often sits slightly higher than a suburban dry cleaner seamstress. For a garment that truly matters, the extra cost is justified.

Pros

  • Excellent with delicate bridal fabrics
  • Central CBD location is convenient for workers
  • Detailed consultations before cutting
  • Expert staff with years of experience

Cons

  • Parking is difficult and expensive
  • Prices are slightly higher than average
  • Can have longer wait times during wedding season

Customer Reviews

Jenny did an exceptional job with my skirt. She is warm, hardworking, highly skilled, and very attentive. She took the time to explain the steps of how she would alter my skirt and helped me find the perfect fit. Price and timeframe were fair and absolutely worth it. She sent a text reminder when my skirt was ready and the final result was exactly what I had envisioned. Her care and craftsmanship are truly evident. I couldn’t be more pleased and highly recommend her services.

Jenny is a wonderful, talented seamstress who altered all my clothes perfectly. She provides a professional alteration service that is affordable and made to measure.

I can happily buy clothes online, confident she can make them a more bespoke flattering fit.

2. Auckland Alterations

auckland-alterations

Address

  • Morningside: Level 2, 17 Taylors Road, Morningside, Mt. Albert
  • Newmarket: 18B Kingdon Street, Newmarket

Contact

  • Morningside: 09 948 6023, 027 222 4561
  • Newmarket: 09 948 2621, 027 322 4561

Schedule

  • Morningside: Mon-Fri 9.00 AM – 5:00 PM, Sat-Sun 10.00 AM – 4.00 PM
  • Newmarket: Mon-Wed 10.00 AM – 7:00 PM, Thurs-Fri 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM, Sat-Sun 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Two locations, one in Morningside and one in Newmarket, allow Auckland Alterations to cover a wide catchment area. Dropping off clothes becomes easy whether you are out west or central.

They focus on preserving the integrity of older garments while making them fit modern bodies. This shop helps you modernise a thrift store find without losing its original character.

You can trust them to update a piece without erasing its history.

One drawback involves their popularity, which can lead to a busy shop floor. You might wait a bit for a fitting room during peak weekend hours.

Additionally, managing communication between two branches can sometimes be tricky if you call the wrong number, so double-check which store you are dialling.

Despite the hustle, the team consistently maintains factory-level finishing on hems. It serves as a reliable spot for those needing versatility and specific expertise in restoring vintage apparel.

Pros

  • Two convenient locations available
  • Skilled at restoring vintage clothing
  • Late-night hours available at Newmarket
  • Factory-finish quality on hems

Cons

  • The shop floor can get crowded on weekends
  • Phone communication can be confusing between branches
  • Turnaround time varies based on workload

Customer Reviews

Auckland Alterations is absolutely wonderful! I trust them with my favourite (and sometimes tricky or vintage) apparel, and the team always delivers. They take particular care to make sure the fit is right, while maintaining the integrity of the garment. I recommend them to everyone!

Very reasonably priced alterations – I had a pair of pants shortened here, not only the quoted cost was very competitive but also very nice finishing and hemming quality that basically looked like it was straight out of the factory. Highly recommended and we will definitely return again

3. Rose’s Alterations

rose-s-alterations

Website: https://roses.co.nz/

Address: 276 Manukau Road, Epsom, Auckland

Contact: 09 520 5290 / [email protected]

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Sat 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Rose’s Alterations in Epsom operates as a local institution and an authority on suit tailoring.

Their staff demonstrate expertise with structured garments, knowing exactly how to shorten a jacket sleeve without ruining buttonholes or linings.

I have a friend who is proportionate between sizes and swears by this place for his work suits. Looking at the sharp break on his trousers, I can see why he keeps going back.

They understand that a suit needs to sit correctly on the shoulder, not just fit tighter. Getting that silhouette right takes a level of skill that not every generalist tailor possesses

The main downside here is the location if you aren’t based in the inner-south suburbs. Epsom can be a bit of a trek if you live on the Shore or out West.

Also, they close on Sundays, which limits your options if that is your only free day for errands.

Pros

  • Specialists in menswear and suit tailoring
  • Long-standing reputation for quality
  • Staff provide honest advice on fit
  • Fast turnaround for minor repairs

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • The Epsom location is not central for everyone
  • Can be pricier for complex suit restructuring

Customer Reviews

I have used this service twice now and is now my go to place if I need any alterations on clothes.

I have experience only excellent service,  great communication and I have found the staff helpful.  It also didn’t take too long for my suit to be altered. Highly recommend.

I’ve been taking my suits to Roses to get altered for years (I’m short and proportionately between two sizes so can’t find suits off the rack that fit well), and Roses have always done a good job, but my most recent suit alteration by Naomi is by far their best work.

4. Perfect Tailors

perfect-tailors

Website: https://www.facebook.com/PerfectTailorsNewMarket/

Address: 10Q/240 A Broadway (inside Railway Street), Newmarket, Auckland

Contact: 09 522 4974

Schedule: Mon-Fri 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Sat 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Speed and value define this old-school operator inside Railway Street. They charge significantly less than flashy mall-based franchises while often delivering better workmanship.

Locals hold onto this hidden secret tightly to avoid queues. It serves as a go-to spot for standard jobs like taking up jeans or fixing zippers.

Their no-nonsense service gets the job done quickly and reliably. If you need basic repairs done well, their efficiency is hard to beat.

Do take note that you usually have to call them or just show up to see if they can fit you in, as appointments aren’t easily managed digitally.

However, if you want a bargain without sacrificing quality, this spot delivers consistently high standards for everyday alterations.

Pros

  • Cheaper than mall-based competitors
  • Very fast service for standard jobs
  • Friendly and professional staff
  • Consistently high standard of work

Cons

  • Reliance on phone/walk-ins for availability
  • Can have queues due to popularity

Customer Reviews

Perfect Taylor’s has delivered excellent workmanship and service every time I’ve visited—three times now! Their prices are fair, the service is quick, and the staff is always friendly and professional. Highly recommend!

I have used perfect tailors for a few years now. The pricing is good & much cheaper than the mall alterations & of a high standard. I usually have pants to shorten & the occasional dress to alter. The service is always friendly & I’ll continue to come here. This business is good value for money 🙂

5. Wardrobe Clothing Alterations

wardrobe-clothing-alterations

Address: 3/23 Ocean View Road, Hillcrest, Auckland

Contact: Walk-in recommended

Schedule: Mon-Fri 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM, Sat 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Located in Hillcrest on the North Shore, Wardrobe Clothing Alterations operates as a true “hidden gem.”

What I like about this place is that their prices remain a fraction of what larger chains charge, while retaining a personal, mom-and-pop service feel.

Paying $30 for a job that costs $120 elsewhere, without cutting corners on stitch quality. You feel like a valued neighbour here rather than just a transaction number.

Finding that kind of genuine service is becoming increasingly rare.

The downside, however, is their location. If you live in the city or South Auckland, crossing the bridge to Hillcrest creates a hassle.

Additionally, their Saturday hours are shorter, closing at 3:00 PM, so you need to get your errands done early.

They also largely rely on walk-ins, so allowing some buffer time when you visit is wise.

For those on the Shore, the savings make the trip unbeatable.

Pros

  • Incredible value for money
  • Personal, friendly family-run vibe
  • Fast turnaround on bulk items
  • Honest assessments of what can be done

Cons

  • Located on the North Shore (far for city dwellers)
  • Limited Saturday hours (Closes 3 PM)
  • Heavy reliance on walk-in service

Customer Reviews

Wow! I usually never leave reviews but I had to for this place. I previously had a dress altered at Angel’s (waist taken in) and it cost ~$120. This place took in the waist of 2 dresses with lining for $30 each and fixed the lining of the dress I got done at Angel’s (lining was too tight and I couldn’t walk) for $15. Not only that but they completed all 3 dresses in 1.5 days! The workmanship and quality is amazing while with Angel’s one the seams of the lining were messy inside.

I will be going here from now on

Amazing service, flawless alterations at a really affordable price. Used their service twice and will definitely be returning only here in the future. Lovely friendly couple. Really fast too, only needed 2 days for a big waist reduction on jeans. Couldn’t recommend them enough!
