The 5 Best African Food Spots in Auckland to Try This Year

african-food-spots-in-auckland
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

To find the best of the best, we focused on what truly makes a dining experience special. Here’s what we looked for in every restaurant:

Authenticity: We were on the hunt for genuine African flavors that tasted like they came straight from a family recipe.

Value for Money: It’s all about getting great bang for your buck—delicious food and generous servings that feel totally worth it.

Atmosphere: We considered the overall energy, looking for spaces that invite you to settle in for a long dinner and others that serve up a quick, tasty meal when you're on the move.

Customer Service: We looked for staff who were not just polite, but truly happy to have you there and eager to make your meal great.

Menu Variety: A winning menu needs enough options to keep things interesting and satisfy any craving.

Ready to go on a culinary adventure? Auckland’s food scene is a vibrant tapestry of global flavours, and its African eateries are a shining example of this diversity.

Aucklanders with roots in the continent will find a taste of home, while curious foodies can discover dishes that will become new favourites.

In my search, I looked for places that deliver authentic, unforgettable flavours and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

Prepare to sample aromatic Somali stews, gather around a hearty South African braai, and even find the best spot to grab ingredients for your own cooking.

Let’s dive into this review of the best African Restaurants here in Auckland.

How much does African food cost in Auckland?

Expect to spend around $25 to $50 per person for a main dish at most African restaurants around the city. The casual neighbourhood spots tend to sit at the lower end, while places with premium cuts or upscale settings push closer to that $50 mark.

Location plays a part too—central Auckland spots usually charge more than suburban gems. The good news is that portions are typically generous, so you’re getting solid value for what you pay.

1. Banaadir African Restaurant

banaadir-african-restaurant

Website: https://www.banaadir.co.nz/
Address: 6/190 Stoddard Road, Mount Roskill, Auckland 1041
Contact: 020 4069 9202 / [email protected]
Hours: Tue – Sun, 11 AM – 9 PM

Must-Try: Somali Rice

If you want authentic Somali cuisine without breaking the bank, this family-run spot in Mt Roskill is where you need to be.

The menu brings those hard-to-find flavours from the Horn of Africa. Think fragrant rice seasoned with xawaash spice blend and dishes that combine traditional Somali cooking with Italian influences.

Everything’s halal-certified, which makes it a go-to for many in Auckland’s diverse community.

When I visited on a Saturday afternoon, I ordered just one main and a side, fully expecting to need more food.

I was wrong. The portions are massive, and I left with a takeaway container.

The only real downside is the limited hours, especially if you’re looking for a late dinner option. But for lunch or early evening meals, it’s a solid choice that won’t empty your wallet.

Pros

  • Authentic and rare Somali/East African cuisine
  • Fully Halal-certified menu
  • Incredible value with huge portions
  • Warm, family-run atmosphere

Cons

  • Limited operating hours
  • A casual setting may not suit all occasions

Customer Reviews

Went here expecting pretty good food based on the reviews, but even then was pleasantly surprised. We only ordered one main each and a couple of sides, but were completely full and even had leftovers to take home. The flavours were interesting and overall very tasty, would definitely be keen to come back again.

I love coming to this little place, it feels like home.

Every time I am homesick I come here and it feels as though I’m back home at mums.

The food is amazing! And freshly cooked, portions are very very generous too.

Little hidden gem in Auckland.

2. Food Culture Cafe

Website: https://www.cafe.atfoodculture.co.nz/
Address: 107 Harris Road, East Tāmaki, Auckland 2013
Contact: 09 600 3480 / [email protected]
Hours: Mon – Fri, 7 AM – 3 PM; Sat – Sun, 8 AM – 3 PM

Must-Try: Chilli Briskets’ Oeufs Benne

Food Culture Cafe stands out with its unique menu, where South African spices liven up classic Kiwi cafe fare alongside Parsi and Persian flavours.

It’s a creative approach that results in truly special dishes where every item tells a story. The bright and welcoming space invites you to settle in for a relaxed brunch or lunch.

Their must-try dish is a fantastic example of their fusion style: eggs Benedict with a spicy chilli beef brisket instead of the usual bacon.

It was a wonderful combination of flavours that worked perfectly. They are also amazing at accommodating dietary needs, with plenty of gluten-free and keto options.

The only downside is its East Tāmaki location, which can be a bit of a drive for some. But the unique cultural dining experience makes it a worthy destination.

Pros

  • Unique multicultural menu (SA, Parsi, Kiwi)
  • Creative twists on classic cafe dishes
  • Excellent for various dietary requirements
  • Functions as a cafe and private event venue

Cons

  • Location is out of the way for some
  • Only open for breakfast and lunch

Customer Reviews

Contact: 020 4011 2200 / [email protected]

Must-Try: Beyaynetu Platter

Asli Bar offers a complete night out by combinin ga shisha lounge and a full food menu under one roof.

Located on Dominion Road, it has a vibrant, South Asian-inspired atmosphere, often with Bollywood music or a DJ setting the mood.

Groups gather here to hang out in the energetic vibe, making it a go-to for a lively night.

The menu is surprisingly extensive, but you have to order their Beyaynetu Platter. They’re perfectly seasoned and make the ideal food to share with friends over drinks.

On my last visit, the fantastic food was a welcome surprise alongside the great music and shisha. Because of its specific theme, it might not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for fun and flavour, Asli is serving.

Pros

  • All-in-one nightlife (food, drinks, shisha)
  • Vibrant South Asian-inspired entertainment
  • Great for private events and parties
  • Convenient and popular Dominion Road location

Cons

  • Shisha niche theme may not appeal to everyone
  • It can get quite loud and busy

Customer Reviews

Came across this hidden gem and safe to say this is some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. Beautiful atmosphere and kind customer service. The lounge is run by a mum and her son and they have created an amazing space that caters for vegetarians also. Highly recommend
– Nyrene Crowley | Google Review

Absolutely mouth watering cuisine from East Africa. A group of vegetarians were easily catered for with a range of curries,  and tangy dips with the home made bread – awesome. We finished with excellent orange cake and speciality tea / coffee.

Surprisingly inexpensive!

4. Bushman’s Grill

bushman-s-grill

Website: https://www.bushmansgrill.co.nz/
Address: 31 Northcote Road, Hillcrest, Auckland 0627
Contact: 09 418 0056 / [email protected]
Hours: Tue – Thu, 5 PM – 8:30 PM; Fri & Sun, 12 PM – 2 PM & 5 PM – 8:30 PM; Sat, 5 PM – 9 PM

Must-Try: Slow-Cooked Pork Spare Ribs

Bushman’s Grill brings the bold flavours of a Southern African braai (BBQ) to the North Shore.

Their philosophy is all about cooking the “Wild Way,” with high-quality meats marinated for hours and cooked over the flame.

The vibe is super casual and fun—definitely not a place to dress up. While the steaks are amazing, the absolute star is the slow-cooked pork spare ribs.

They are tender and flavourful, with the meat falling right off the bone.

The portions here are legendary. I went with a group and we shared a combo platter so we could try a bit of everything, but the ribs stole the show.

It gets really busy, so booking ahead is a smart move. While they only have one location in the North Shore, it has become a destination for meat lovers across Auckland.

Pros

  • Signature “Wild Way” flame-grill cooking
  • High-quality, free-range NZ meats
  • Famous for massive, generous portions
  • Casual, fun atmosphere ideal for group meals

Cons

  • Single location on the North Shore may need a drive
  • Gets very busy, booking is essential

Customer Reviews

Highly recommend you try this African restaurant. The portions are massive, and not badly priced as you will probably be taking a doggy bag. Great vibe, fantastic service and recommend you book before going as it does get full.
– Ashley Corfield | Google Review

Good old school Southern African food. Delicious! I recommend a combo like calamari and streak and think about sharing meals. It’s a great way to taste everything. Who ever looks after the wine selection is doing a great job too. Thanks I had a great night.

5. Nando’s (Queen St)

nando-s-queen-st

Website: https://www.nandos.co.nz/
Address: 360 Queen Street, Auckland Central, Auckland 1010
Contact: 1300 626 367
Hours: Mon – Sun, 10 AM – 10 PM

Must-Try: Flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken

You probably know Nando’s already, but their Queen Street location deserves mention for bringing accessible African-Portuguese flavours to the heart of Auckland.

The flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken is the star here, with those signature chillies sourced from Southern African farms.

Their PERi-Perks loyalty program also sets them apart. You get a birthday meal and free chips for signing up. On top of that, you also get points that add up quickly.

The menu has options beyond chicken, too, including vegetarian choices and customizable wraps and burgers.

During my lunch visit, the chicken lived up to expectations with that distinct chilli kick, and the PERi-PERi chips were the perfect sidekick.

The central location makes it convenient for a quick meal between errands or after work. However, peak hours can get busy, though.

You can expect to wait if you’re coming during the lunch rush or Friday dinner time.

Pros

  • Authentic, locally-made South African foods
  • Uses high-quality NZ meat and imported spices
  • Offers nationwide online delivery
  • Wide range of groceries and specialty items

Cons

  • Highly-packed during lunch
  • The stock of specialty items can sometimes vary

Customer Reviews

Nandos has always been a hit for me, chicken that never disappoints. Delicious Peri Peri chips and hot chicken make for a filling and rich meal everytime. Great for group setting. Decent service. Fantastic decor and seating set-up. Great price point for high quality food.
– Jade Stewart | Google Review

I visit here once a week with some South African friends as it reminds me of the Nandos experience back home. Friendly staff, clean facilities and excellent location. You can also download the app and earn 10% of your bill in points towards a future meal. Great value for money and healthy too (excl. fries and alcohol).
