How We Chose the Best

When we dropped by the Community Alcohol & Drug Service, we were really impressed with everything they’ve got going on. To start, the mix of group and individual counseling options makes this place super versatile.
What we really liked was the comprehensive approach—they’ve got medical detox, medication-assisted treatment, and a solid recovery program. We chatted with a few folks there, and they were really happy with the quality of care.
They also point out how the staff genuinely cares about each of their journeys. Another huge plus for us is that their medical detox processes are well managed.
Plus, the medication-assisted treatment helps take some of the edge off recovery, making it more bearable for a lot of people we spoke to. However, something most of us are iffy about is the lack of social media presence.
This can be a bit of a bummer when you’re trying to get a feel for their latest updates or successes.
Costs can be another point of contention, since we find them on the pricier side.
Pros
- Comprehensive counseling options
- High-quality care
- Medical detox available
- Medication-assisted treatment
- Genuine and caring staff
Cons
- No social media presence
- High cost
Warm support and community connection
“I’ve been attending CADS here for a while now. They’ve been great in supporting me to get back on the straight & narrow. They are friendly & helpful & are really informative on all the services they offer. There is free coffee & tea as well as biscuits & sometimes cake. They help anyone with drugs & alcohol addiction as well as anger management, not only court orders but also self referrals. I’ve met a lot of decent people who are just in bad situations through CADS, & some them, I’m happy to call them friends now.”

Wings Trust

Business Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 8 AM to 4 PM

Wings Trust had some solid core programs that really stood out to us. This includes New Beginnings for those just kicking off their recovery journey and the Community Reintegration Program, which helps maintain progress for ongoing treatment.
And then there’s the Wings Intensive Treatment, which is seriously comprehensive and hands-on. They also introduce us to their extended programs, like the aftercare program and the home hosting option.
Financially, they’ve got some sweet relief with the WINZ benefit. Non-members have a shot at applying for it too, although eligibility is something they’ll discuss with you during admission.
However, after talking with a few clients, the process of understanding and applying for the WINZ benefit can be a tad slow. So, while this option is helpful, it might cause some delays.
Another thing we’re just concerned about is the lack of a social media presence. It’s tough when you can’t peek into their day-to-day updates or successes through the platforms most of us use.
Pros
- Comprehensive core programs
- Effective extended programs
- WINZ benefit available
- Warm, supportive environment
- Genuine and caring staff
Cons
- No social media presence
- Slow WINZ benefit process
Life-changing support and stellar staff
“Staff and housing for clients – bloody awesome!! Life changing for me and my whanau. Anyone that says otherwise needs to work on themselves.”

Clinic 77 also doesn’t shy away from tackling concurrent issues like anxiety, depression, and medication dependency. We found their gender groups to be a thoughtful addition, catering to specific needs that different demographics might have.
Talking to both staff and clients, it was evident that a lot of thought goes into their individualized and group therapy sessions.

On the downside, the financial aspect is something to seriously consider when looking into their programs.
