Your Health Check: The 5 Best Blood Test Services in Auckland

blood-test-services-in-auckland
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Turnaround Time: We looked for labs that process samples efficiently, from same-day collection and processing, to specialized tests taking 2-5 days, and complex bloodwork of 3-7 days.

Patient Comfort: We prioritised locations with phlebotomists known for a gentle touch, because nobody likes looking like a pincushion.

Accessibility: We checked for convenient parking and public transport links, as wrestling with hospital traffic is the last thing you need.

Range of Services: We considered whether the facility offers specialised testing or just the basics, ensuring they can handle whatever your doctor ordered.

Booking System: We valued places that offer online appointments or realistic walk-in wait times to respect your busy schedule.

Diagnosing a new issue, monitoring a chronic condition, or ticking off a pre-employment requirement all demand the same thing: a fast, painless process. You want it over with quickly, without a massive bill.

Auckland offers plenty of options, but wait times and comfort levels vary significantly. Some labs clear the queue in minutes, while others leave you waiting in a sterile room for an hour.

To save you the headache, I’ve rounded up the best places to get blood tests in Auckland to help you get your blood sorted efficiently.

How much do blood tests cost in Auckland?

Individual prices vary, with a simple blood count costing around $27–$50, while complex immigration medical panels often exceed $200.

Routine blood tests referred by a GP are often covered by the public health system for New Zealand residents and citizens, though some labs or clinics may charge a small fee for sample collection or consultation.

In contrast, private patients without a referral or visitors on a visa must pay out of pocket. This usually involves a standard consultation or collection fee between $20 and $30, plus the specific test costs.

Finally, DNA and paternity testing generally cost more, with prices often starting around $345 for non-legal peace-of-mind tests and can exceed $1,600 for court-admissible reports.

1. LabPLUS

labplus

Website: tewhatuora.govt.nz

Address: Building 31, Auckland City Hospital, Gate 4 off Grafton Road, Grafton

Contact: 09 307 8995, 0800 522 7587, [email protected]

Schedule:

  • Mon-Fri 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Sat 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM

As the main regional hub for Auckland’s medical testing, LabPLUS operates directly within the Auckland City Hospital grounds. It serves as the primary destination for serious diagnostic testing rather than routine checks.

Their status as a national reference centre means they handle specialised, complex tests that smaller community labs often cannot process. If your specialist requires an urgent or obscure analysis, this location offers the safest bet for accuracy and depth.

Staff here are highly trained and fully qualified, so the team navigates critical hospital cases with the utmost precision.

However, the hospital setting creates a distinctly clinical atmosphere. You won’t find a cozy vibe here, only top-tier medical science.

Prepare for the hustle typical of a major hospital location, including navigating the large campus. It’s the best option when the medical stakes are high, but perhaps less convenient for a quick cholesterol check on your lunch break.

Pros

  • Handles complex specialist testing
  • High-level medical expertise onsite
  • Open relatively late (7 PM)
  • Direct link to hospital records
  • Reliable public transport access nearby

Cons

  • Parking at the hospital is expensive
  • It can be difficult to navigate to Building 31
  • Not ideal for quick, routine wellness checks

2. Awanui Labs

awanui-labs

Website: awanuilabs.co.nz

Address: Multiple Locations (Areas Served: Central, North, South, West Auckland, and Waiheke)

Contact: 09 574 7399

Schedule: Hours May Vary By Location

Awanui Labs (formerly known as Labtests) anchors community testing in Auckland. Their network spans almost every suburb, placing a collection centre within a short drive for most residents.

Modernised services now allow you to pay for and request wellness tests without a GP referral, streamlining the process for those proactively managing their health. This accessibility makes them the default choice for most Aucklanders needing routine bloods.

Phlebotomists work fast, often clearing full waiting rooms surprisingly quickly.

Since they serve the general public, the “take a number” system can result in unpredictable wait times during peak morning rush hours.

They also manage high volumes well, ensuring standards remain consistent across their network.

While the experience might feel impersonal due to the scale of operation, the convenience of having a location near your home or office usually outweighs the lack of frills.

Pros

  • Massive network of locations
  • Self-request options available
  • Consistent service quality city-wide
  • Online booking is available

Cons

  • Wait times can be long in the mornings
  • Impersonal “take a number” system
  • Parking availability varies wildly by site

The best blood test

Had the best blood test with Liezl at the beginning of Jan 2025. Usually it takes nurses and doctors a while to get my blood. She found the vein straight away and was able to get it within literally 1 minute. Would 100 percent recommend for all blood tests.

Super friendly and capable staff

Without question the best blood test lab in Auckland. No wait, super friendly and capable staff, completely painless blood test. Will come back here for sure!

3. DNA Diagnostics

dna-diagnostics

Website: dnadiagnostics.co.nz

Address: Level 2 Quay Park Centre, 68-70 Beach Road

Contact: 09 571 0474, [email protected]

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

DNA Diagnostics focuses intensely on genetic and legal testing rather than standard cholesterol checks.

They provide court-admissible paternity and relationship testing, offering a level of chain-of-custody security that regular labs do not provide. This level of scrutiny allows them to be considered the gold standard in Auckland for legal and immigration purposes.

Clients undergoing specialised genetic profiling here often report a process that is surprisingly discreet and empathetic compared to a busy public lab.

The staff understand that clients are often in stressful or sensitive situations and take the time to explain the science without overcomplicating it. This specialised nature comes with a higher price tag, reflecting the detailed work involved.

Additionally, they do not operate on weekends, which requires careful planning for those with standard work hours.

If you need privacy and specialised answers, the extra cost and limited hours are worth the investment for the service provided.

Pros

  • Results are legally court-admissible
  • High level of privacy and discretion
  • ISO 15189 accredited facility
  • Specialised genetic counselling is available

Cons

  • Significantly more expensive than basic labs
  • Closed on weekends
  • Not for routine general health bloods

4. Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa (Papakura Clinic)

sexual-wellbeing-aotearoa-papakura-clinic

Website: sexualwellbeing.org.nz

Address: Trust Arcade, 169 Great South Road, Papakura

Contact: 0800 372 546, 07 810 6610

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

If you need a blood test specifically for sexual health screening, like HIV or Syphilis checks, Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa (formerly Family Planning) is, hands down, the best place to go.

Unlike a general lab where you might feel exposed sitting in a crowded waiting room, this clinic offers a discreet, safe space where you can actually talk openly.

When I visited for a routine check-up, the nurse was incredibly reassuring, explaining the specific blood markers they were looking for without making anything feel awkward or scary.

The biggest perk here is the cost and accessibility. If you are under 22, the consultation and blood testing referrals are completely free, which is a massive relief for students.

Even for older adults, the fees are very reasonable compared to private specialists. The process is designed to be as stress-free as possible, as appointments generally allow for a proper consultation before testing, ensuring you are fully informed.

Just keep in mind that they strictly handle sexual and reproductive health bloods, so don’t book here if you’re trying to get your iron levels or diabetes checked.

Pros

  • Free for NZ residents under 22
  • Non-judgmental, specialized staff
  • Low cost for the Community Services Card
  • Discreet environment for sensitive testing

Cons

  • Strictly limited to sexual health bloods
  • Appointments can be hard to get quickly
  • Not for general pathology (e.g., Iron/B12)
  • Closed on weekends

Customer Reviews

The best service I’ve received

It has been probably the best service I’ve received in any medical centre in NZ. You completely get the feeling they care about your physical and mental health. The staff was really kind and helpful. Thank you so much!

Couldn’t ask for more

1st time at the Papakura facility and I am amazed at how organised it is run. Having been to New Market and Otara, I have to say this is the best – fee is much lower than New Market and great customer service too.  I was welcomed by very nice receptionist and Dr Shan. Couldnt ask for more

5. TDDA (The Drug Detection Agency) Henderson

tdda-the-drug-detection-agency-henderson

Website: tdda.com

Address: 22E Te Pai Place, Henderson, Auckland

Contact: 09 835 2918

Schedule

  • Mon 8:00 AM – 3:45 PM
  • Tues-Fri 7:30 AM – 3:45 PM

When most people think of tests, they think of doctors and sickness, but a huge chunk of “blood work” requests in Auckland are actually for employment compliance. TDDA Henderson is the specialist you go to when you need to prove you are fit for duty.

While they are famous for urine and hair follicle testing, they are also a key provider for specialized alcohol biomarkers like Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) blood testing, which is widely considered the definitive method for proving sobriety in legal or workplace disputes.

Walking in, the vibe is strictly professional and no-nonsense, which is exactly what you want when your job or legal standing is on the line. I found the staff to be incredibly disciplined regarding chain-of-custody procedures, ensuring that your results are legally defensible.

It isn’t a general wellness clinic, and you won’t find magazines or kids’ toys here, but the efficiency is unmatched.

Pros

  • Industry leader for workplace/legal testing
  • Offers specialized PEth blood testing
  • ISO 17025 accredited for legal accuracy
  • Very fast turnaround for negative results

Cons

  • Intimidating, strictly clinical atmosphere
  • Closes early (3:45 PM)
  • No general health bloods (e.g., cholesterol)
  • Strict appointment/referral protocols
