The funny thing about this article is that we ourselves could’ve used it not too long ago! Some months back, we actually had a meeting with a potential investor for the publication, so we were obviously eager to impress.
Our manager booked a seemingly decently reviewed caterer for the event, as such. But let’s just say the “gourmet” mini quiches turned out to be more like hockey pucks.
Needless to say, that client meeting went down in company history, not for the groundbreaking ideas but for the catering catastrophe.

Recently, we decided to switch things up for our team’s boardroom lunch and brought in the Free Range Chef to treat us to their WellBeing at Work menu.
Their commitment to organic and sustainable ingredients really shone through, especially in the crisp, fresh salads and the high-quality protein choices that were so thoughtfully prepared.
Everything from energising smoothies to scrumptious raw treats and filling, nutritious salads was on offer. It was great to see such thoughtful inclusions like vegetarian and keto-friendly options.
But those lemony coconut raw cheesecakes stole the show, ending our meal on a high note without any of the guilt usually associated with dessert.
A bit of feedback from the team was that, for the hungrier among us, the portion sizes could have been a tad more generous.
Also, as you might expect with a tailor-made service like this, it doesn’t come with a one-size-fits-all price tag. You’re looking at spending a bit more than you would with your run-of-the-mill caterer.

“We can’t recommend Free Range Chef enough! They recently catered our wedding and did the most incredible job. From start to end, the staff were easy to communicate with, adaptable to our needs and budget and just so professional. On the day I knew there was nothing I needed to worry about and we were blown away by the food. We requested a grazing table during the reception and I had so many of the guests say it was the best grazing table they’d had. The main meal was also a 10/10. We at Auckland Magazine used Southern Spit Roast & BBQ Catering for a corporate event. We ended up choosing their Spit Roast Menu (3 meat choices, 2 vegetables, 6 salads, and 5 desserts).
For starters, the spectacle of the spit-roasted prime lamb being carved on site added an authentic luxury touch to our corporate event. And it didn’t just smell amazing—we lost count of how many servings we had.
We also liked how the Spit Roast team brought their own tables and cloths, saving us time from having to sort it out ourselves.
However, we noted some dishes on the buffet were missing labels, creating a bit of confusion among those of us with dietary restrictions. What we thought were creamed potatoes ended up being coleslaw with mayo. A small detail, yet one that disrupted the otherwise smooth flow of our dining experience.
Additionally, while the serving staff was polite, we felt there was a gap in communication. We were sometimes left wondering about the sequence of the serving (since there are so many of us), which could easily have been remedied with a more proactive approach on the server’s part.
But hey, at least the desserts were a hit, especially that warm apple shortcake.

“First impression of Southern Spit Roast & BBQ Catering was last year over the phone with Shelley I felt rushed and not heard having to call straight back about details left out. My timing for calling probably wasn’t okay and may have woken her up before 7.30am at the time online read open 24 hours. Interaction onwards was very good. They had asked for two hours to prepare catering I’d felt some doubt when 45 minutes had pass until a call came through. One staff arrived and had setup within an hour before we ate what a professional superhuman. Forever impression wow presentation of the menu was exactly as we’d thought to be only praises for so much tasty food (the best fruit salad I’ve ever had) and good words from myself family and friends. The cater made it work with the small floor flow given too. I’m happy I’d chosen them and happy I’d placed my son’s 21st booking last year cause we’d saved alot of money with prices rising.”

We teamed up with Loaves & Fishes Catering for our company’s Christmas party last year. Loaves & Fishes had no problem throwing down a Christmas spread for $50 a head, with a variety of mains, sides, and a dessert platter that’s like Christmas came early.
While a heads-up on potential allergens in their menu descriptions would’ve been a cherry on top for those of us with dietary needs, we made do with the choices available.
It’s also worth mentioning that they cater to crowds of 30 or more, so those having a small gathering have to look elsewhere. Oh, and the local delivery charge doesn’t tag along with the catering fee, just a little FYI.
Despite this, the feast arrived looking like it stepped out of a food magazine—gorgeous arrangements on platters and trays that meant we could skip the frantic search for serving dishes. This was not only a win for sophistication but also gave us back precious minutes for merry-making.
And the portions? Santa’s got nothing on them. We were all over their menu, but the Christmas ham with its cranberry and mustard glaze was the star of the show.

Food can be made to look amazing but to look AND taste so fresh and delicious takes more than care and skill. First off, hats off to Cater Station for making ordering as easy as pie. Their online system is a breeze, making us feel like catering pros.
They’ve got these catering “stations” designed for either a small army of 10–15, a larger battalion of 20–25, 100+, party packs, and corporate feeds too.
And for those of us who can’t resist coming back for seconds (or thirds), there’s even a rewards programme.
But what we really liked the most was the range of grub on offer. From gourmet hot dogs and tacos to the more exotic banh mis and lip-smacking dipper donuts, we were spoilt for choice.
And let’s talk about the portion sizes—generous doesn’t even cut it. We were patting our bellies in satisfaction.
Now, onto the packaging—who knew cardboard boxes could be so cool? These “stations” aren’t just about keeping your grub in one place—they’re tidy, they’re eco-friendly, and they save you the hassle of washing up.

We have staff with dairy intolerances, gluten intolerances, and vegetarians and not a single complaint – even the strictly carnivores loved the tofu! “Excellent all ’round, arrived in perfect time – catering included tacos for 10 – 15, chicken protein chosen, drinks, and add-on chocolate donuts. Ordered for a university team networking/training event. Perfect for all dietary requirements, everyone managed two – three tacos each until they were full (14 in attendance). More than enough left over to nick couple bits home. Donuts had to be shared around office, couldn’t finish ’em after main station. Will 100% be returning & highly recommend. Ngā mihi, my dudes x”
