Kiwis? We take our meat seriously. From weekend grill-ups to family roasts, we only have standards for quality cuts. Because when the meat is good, everything just falls right into place.
But then again, not everything falls into place. Sometimes the cuts are overpriced; sometimes the meat is tough and flavourless.
That’s why we went high and above to find the best butcheries in Auckland. We carefully reviewed each place to give you a list that’ll guide you to the best cuts!
After much review, here are the places that offer premium cuts you can’t find anywhere else.
How much do meats cost in Auckland?
The cost of meat in Auckland ranges from $14 to $18 for beef mince, $35 to $40 for sirloin, $11 to $14 for chicken, and about $20 for pork. Price is usually calculated per kilogram. Speciality items like Wagyu sirloin can reach $60.
1. PNP Farms’ Butchery – Epsom

Location: 590 Manukau Road, Epsom, Auckland 1023, New Zealand
Contact: +64 9 625 6684
Opening Hours:
- Tuesday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Saturday: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Closed on Sunday & Monday
Rather than sourcing from third-party suppliers, PNP Farms operates with full vertical integration, with beef supplied directly from their own South Island farms.
We particularly appreciate this farm-to-butchery model, as it allows for stronger quality control and full traceability from pasture to plate. During our visits, the meat consistently appeared fresh and well-presented.
Their Angus beef deserves special mention. Across multiple visits, quality remained consistent — cuts were well-marbled, clean-tasting, and carefully trimmed.
They are also a strong choice for Asian-style cuts. Whether you’re preparing Korean BBQ or Chinese hot pot, the essential selections are readily available.
The butchery earns additional praise for its selection of house-made sausages and chicken products. These in-house specialties elevate their offering beyond standard retail cuts.
Due to strong customer demand and limited daily preparation, some premium cuts may sell out earlier in the day. Visiting earlier is recommended for the full selection.
Super fresh and full of flavour
“Absolutely love PNP Farms Butchery! Their beef comes straight from their own farm down in the South Island — super fresh and full of flavour. They’ve also got an awesome range of hot pot ingredients, all really tasty and authentic. Perfect for a cosy hot pot night or a weekend BBQ. The team is friendly and always helpful. Definitely one of the best butcheries in Auckland!”

A hidden gem in Auckland
“Found this place on Little Red Book and based on the reports I saw, this place needed a try. The Lady behind the counter clearly knew a lot about a variety of cuts and cooking styles. We bought Scotch and Sirloin pieces for steaks and a plate of thin cuts for hot pot. Absolutely phenomenal. Plenty of meat in the thin cut platter, like three plus layers. This place is a hidden gem in Auckland.”

2. Westmere Butchery

Location: 131 West End Road, Westmere, Auckland 1022
Contact: +64 9 376 5954
Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM, Saturday: 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:16 PM
Westmere has over 45 years of experience in the business. It’s no surprise then that they’re one of the go-to butcheries by locals.
One thing we noted was the quality of the meat. They vacuum-pack and age steaks for 2 weeks. The careful aging practice really made the difference.
The freshness of meat options also met our criteria. We ordered some beef for cooking, and the tenderness and flavour were really evident.
Specialised sausages and smallgoods are in a range that almost overwhelmed us. They have over 30 varieties of in-house beef, pork, chicken, and lamb.
Some international specialists also got our attention. To name a few, there’s haggis, biltong, droewors, and boerewors. This is a plus for the UK and South African communities.
If there’s one thing to note, the prices sit firm in the premium-butcher range. We also heard a few complaints about customer service, though this isn’t the norm in the shop.
Worth the price
“Great quality meat. The chicken satay kebabs are a good find – with no peanuts used!
Excellent choice of sausages. The best pork pies I’ve had in NZ. Give them a try. Sure, it’s a little more pricey than the supermarket, but the variety and quality is worth the difference.”

Fantastic range of meats
“Fantastic range of meats from various animals, produce and cheese section as well which is well stocked. Always packed which makes sense as this is one of the best butchers in Central Auckland.”

3. Aussie Butcher New Lynn

Location: Unit G/10 Margan Avenue, New Lynn, Auckland 0600
Contact: +64 9 827 8827
Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Aussie Butcher is among our favourite butcheries in Auckland when it comes to the range of options. Customers can come here for premium steaks, low-and-slow BBQ cuts, and thick-cut aged beef.
Apart from the generic meat options, they also have strong in-house production. We really liked their sausages, meat matties, koftas, and on-site-made ham.
We ordered a few options across different cuts to assess quality. We’re happy to note that all our orders have been fresh. When cooked, the meats are tender and rich in taste.
The customer service was pretty solid when we visited. We visited during busy periods, and the staff remained efficient and friendly. They take time giving recommendations and even offer cooking advice.
But then again, some customers said that it’s not always like that. There were times when the staff felt dismissive too.
Despite the premium tag, we find their prices to be relatively competitive for a specialty butcher. They’re still not cheaper than supermarkets, but we appreciate the flexibility.
An art gallery of meat
“This place is an art gallery of meat, and everything you may or may not need to help create your own meaty masterpiece. Fantastic staff who couldn’t have been more helpful save for popping around and cleaning the BBQ after you’ve finished.”

Great quality at a reasonable price
“Despite the pre-Christmas rush and the generally busy nature of the place, we still went away feeling valued and appreciated as a customer. Staff still had time to answer questions and offer advice. The products have been fantastic thus far. We bought a wide range of items and have so far eaten maybe half. Prices were decent and given the quality, well-placed. Thanks team!”

4. Pirie’s Butchery

Location: 701 Mount Eden Road, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024
Contact: +64 9 638 9211
Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM, Saturday: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Pirie’s specialises in sausages and smallgoods, and it’s hard to find another option that’s as good as theirs in the city.
We tried a few options ourselves. We were immediately impressed by the range of house-made flavours. When cooked, they held their shape and taste.
There are also plenty of award-winning varieties like black pudding and specialty pork sausages.
We love how knowledgeable their staff is when it comes to their products. They give recommendations, giving that old-school butcher feel even during busy periods.
Sourcing standards were in check. According to the team, they use free-range and sustainably produced meats. The farm-to-fork approach ensures better quality control.
Even their prepared meats impressed us. In fact, many patrons here come for their marinated meats, kebabs, and other ready-to-cook options.
For busy households, that’s a big plus.
The prices are just a bit pricey, which is not surprising for a premium butchery. As a small shop, the place can also feel crowded during peak times.
Enjoyable shopping experience
“Excellent selection of high quality meats at decent prices with top shelf service! 🥩🍖🥓🥧🍗These guys care more about you getting what you want for what you need than they do about making money – they convinced me I needed a smaller cut of loin for my beef wellington for two and they were right! They stock a whole host of lovingly curated cuts of all kinds while also offering some prize winning pies and special sauces. It was an absolute pleasure to shop in an independent butchery with old world charm. Thanks guys!”

5. Pinehill Butchery

Location: 654 East Coast Road, Browns Bay, Auckland 0630
Contact: +64 9 476 0060
Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM, Saturday: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Sunday: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Pinehill brings years of experience to locals, with expertise showing in the quality of every cut.
We love their meat selection, too. They offer many NZ grass-fed beef products, as well as free-range lamb, pork, and chicken. The premium offerings were also solid, including Carrara Wagyu and Black Angus brisket.
If we have to highlight one option, it’s their dry-aged steaks. Their aged steaks are aged for 21 days to the bone, so the flavour and tenderness are really out of this world.
We’re fans of their specialty products too. We liked their biltong and cured meats, which were all made in-house using unique spice blends.
The in-house sausages were equally great. They’re made in small batches, so the quality is well controlled. It emphasises the flavours too, which include traditional and honey-glazed rashers.
That said, communication via email needs a bit of improvement. Certain options run out quickly, too, so calling ahead to check stock is advised.
Well-priced and seasoned well
“I remember my friend giving me my first taste of their extra hot biltong chilli bites. I’ve been one of their customers ever since. That was years ago and the taste still hits the same. The meat selection is really well priced and seasoned well.”

Absolute best
“Whenever I visit from Gisborne, this is THE ONE place on the list I always want to visit. The chilli biltong packs are the absolute best if you’re into spicy meat. Their braai/bbq packs are also mean for feeding masses at a gathering. Highly recommend the chilli biltong though (extra hot), it’s THAT GOOD!”
