With its on-site hospital and large team, the Mangere centre is well placed to handle a wide range of medical and rehabilitation needs.
Injured, sick, and mistreated animals come here for rehabilitation before finding homes. Their full on-site veterinary team ensures that any animal you adopt has been medically vetted.
A volunteer explained that their “Village” setup gives dogs realistic downtime, assessing their true behaviour better than a concrete cell.
However, the administrative machine often moves slowly due to the organisation’s size.

Adopted a kitten from SPCA Mangere about 6 weeks ago. The staff & volunteers here were very friendly and knowledgeable. They made sure my partner and I got all information we needed before taking our cat home. Georgia was looking after us when we were in the shelter and she’s been very patient when trying to help us finding the right kitty. I’d suggest people who’re thinking of adopting to not to be intimidated by the online booking system. If you’re comfortable to do any online shopping, you’ll be fine using the adoption portal to fill in a form and book a time for your visit. I believe it helps the staff to prepare for the meet & greet as well as reducing the stress level of the animals due to foot traffic. We have a very happy kitty calling our home his now :3 Hope all fur babies find their forever home!

Officers are surprisingly helpful, breaking the “dog catcher” stereotype. However, the pound environment creates significant noise and stress for the animals.
Constant barking might mask a dog’s true, relaxed personality during a viewing. Furthermore, stricter time limits compared to private rescues increase the pressure to adopt quickly.

Love everything about this organisation! Could not fault one single thing! From the communication, to the service and their pop up events for the community 🤍 I had an unexpected litter, and needed advice, I came across their group on Facebook and reached out & I couldn’t be more happy with the outcome, they gave me amazing advice and even stopped by to do a check up on the puppies to see how they were doing and brang some goodies, extra bedding and some toys for my fur babies to enjoy, few months later they organised for my girl to be desexed 🥰 so grateful for the time and effort they have put in, making the experience surpass all my expectations!
