After googling “easy DIY tattoos” and a few too many beers on a Friday night, my friend attempted giving himself a tattoo. Long story short, his spontaneous at-home tattoo experiment looked more like a squished mosquito than anything.
Seeing him endure weeks of embarrassment and hiding his DIY tattoo under long sleeves, I looked into the top tattoo places in Auckland for him to rectify his tattoo disaster.
Fortunately, the rest of the Auckland Magazine team helped me find the best in the city.
After speaking to numerous talented tattoo artists, checking out their portfolios, and speaking with their customers, here’s who’s made it onto our list of the best tattoo shops in Auckland.
How much does it cost to get a tattoo in Auckland? Getting a tattoo in Auckland costs at least 150 NZD. This price is just an estimate and will vary depending on the size of the tattoo, the design, and more. |

Extremely happy and grateful for the awesome job Harman done
“Harman was very professional and welcoming. Studio very tidy with tv screen playing some great music in the back-round. Extremely happy and grateful for the awesome job Harman done on both mother and daughter. It was great how Harman went through the process and ensured that we were happy with the layout of the design before commencing with the ink, he didn’t hesitate to make any changes. The process was smooth sailing. Would 100% have no hesitations referring him to others as I was also referred to Gargoyle Tattoo.
Thanks Harman for your services, will definitely be back.
Well Done!”
Harman was great to work with and was so polite throughout the entire sitting
“This was my first tattoo in NZ and it was an amazing experience! Harman was great to work with and was so polite throughout the entire sitting. He was kind enough to give me movie recommendations since I was there most of the day, and shared some fascinating Indian history with me. The tattoo turned out better than I was expecting and I am beyond thrilled with his work. The next time I am in NZ I will absolutely be coming back! Thank you Harman!

Gordy killed it!
“Absolutely great spot. Gordy killed it! While visiting NZ I decided to get my first tattoo done before I headed back to the states. I booked It last minute, while being three hours away Gordy was able to have a zoom meeting with me. We had an extensive chat about what I was looking for and what he thought would work visually. Super stoked about it, Ill definitely be stopping by when I come back next year. Thanks Gordy 🙏”

He got the design and colour matching to a T
“Just had a tattoo done by Carpe and it was amazing. He got the design and colour matching to a T and it looks fantastic. Aside from the wicked tattooing skills, he was also a lovely person to have as my artist and was very informative about aftercare (great for any people wanting their first tattoo). The price also wasn’t extortionate which is ideal when you’re a uni student. I am so so happy with the outcome! I would trust him for all my future pieces too, so he better not leave haha”

Adrian seemed to draw every line of the tattoo with care
“Adrian did my tattoo at the end of March and he did a fantastic job! It healed well, and Adrian took the time to talk about and adjust the draft before tattooing! He appears to be patient and you could tell how important it is to him that his customers get exactly the tattoo that they would like. Adrian seemed to draw every line of the tattoo with care, and he helped me clean and look after my tattoo, so I could fly home with it on that same day without having to worry too much. I would recommend Adrian to anyone who is looking for a tattoo artist in Auckland 😊 thank you!”
Felt very comfortable throughout the entire process
“Adrian did a fantastic job for us today! He was very accommodating in making room for us on short notice and stayed open late to ensure nothing was rushed. His experience showed as he listened attentively during the consult and produced exactly what we were looking for. Felt very comfortable throughout the entire process, even dealing with someone getting their first tattoo. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area! Thanks Chapter Two!!”
