5 Best Speech Therapists in Auckland to Help You Find Your Voice

best-speech-therapist-auckland
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Approachability: I looked for therapists who help children feel at ease. It’s hard to practise new sounds when you’re busy wishing you were somewhere else.

  • Specific expertise: I checked for experience with needs such as autism and literacy difficulties, so families can find support that fits.

  • Flexibility: I looked for home visits and online sessions. Auckland traffic doesn’t need a standing appointment too.

  • Caregiver involvement: I favoured therapists who show parents how to practise between sessions. The work shouldn’t end when the appointment does.

Acting school has me noticing every swallowed syllable. Now I’m practising my lines and wondering whether my everyday speech could use some attention too.

Finding the best speech therapist in Auckland can feel daunting, especially when you’re looking for help for your child. You want someone who’ll understand what’s tricky and help you spot progress along the way.

I’ve put together this review to make that search easier. Let’s find a therapist who feels like the right fit, whether you’re working on clearer speech or helping your child be heard.

How much does it cost to hire a speech therapist in Auckland?

A private initial assessment without a written report typically costs $190–$250, including GST. With a written report, expect $380–$480.

A 30-minute therapy session costs around $80–$110. A 45-minute session is usually $120–$130, while a full 60-minute session runs $135–$180.

1. Speech Therapy Connections | West Auckland

Website

Areas Served: Auckland, NZ and surrounding areas (Mobile service)

Contact: 021 027 21317 | [email protected]

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM

Speech Therapy Connections brings its therapy room to West Auckland in a converted van. Your child can have a session near home, school or daycare without you hunting for another waiting room.

Julia Schaefer works with children on speech and language, autism-related communication needs, and dyslexia support through structured literacy.

The van has toys and space for parents, so you’re welcome to sit in and pick up ideas to practise later.

I like that the setup gives children a familiar place for sessions, even when the meeting spot changes. For families juggling school runs and appointments, that’s one less room to find and one less bag to unpack.

There are a couple of practical catches: sessions run Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 4 PM, which may mean rearranging school or work. If you’re in Piha, Kumeu or Huia, you may need to drive partway and meet the van at a reserve.

Pros

  • Converted van brings therapy close to home, school or daycare
  • Support for speech, language, autism-related communication and dyslexia
  • Parents are welcome to join sessions and learn ways to practise at home

Cons

  • Weekday sessions end at 4 PM, which may clash with school or work
  • Families in Piha, Kumeu or Huia may need to drive partway to meet the van

Top Notch Speech Therapy Experience

Julia is a top-notch speech therapist. Our nearly 4-year-old son has just finished up with Julia after 8 months of working with her weekly. We have seen a huge improvement in his speech and his overall happiness and quality of life. Julia is fun, kind, and professional. I recommend her highly!

Kind, Patient, and Caring Support

We are so grateful for the support our child received during his speech therapy sessions with Julia. Even though we only spent a short amount of time together due to family issues, we have already seen great improvement in our child’s confidence and learning ability.

Julia has been incredibly kind, patient, and caring with our son, and always made us feel comfortable and supported throughout the process. She took the time to clearly explain each step of the process and set clear expectations, which we really appreciated as parents.

2. Auckland Speech Therapy

Website

Areas Served: Auckland, NZ and surrounding areas

Contact: 021 02477545 | 027 4269250 | [email protected]

Schedule: Daily, 8 AM – 7 PM

Auckland Speech Therapy works with children and adults, tailoring support to their communication needs.

For children, the team looks for ways to build speech and language skills into everyday activities, so practice can happen beyond an appointment.

Its autism support uses play and interaction to help children connect and communicate. I like that parents and educators can get practical training too, because a useful strategy deserves more than one outing.

That training can take the form of workshops, webinars or smaller consultations. Teletherapy is available when suitable, which could spare some families a trip across Auckland.

The catch is that online sessions aren’t the right fit for everyone, so you’ll need to discuss that option with the team.

Some of the suggested strategies may involve follow-up at home or school, so ask what’s manageable for your family before booking.

Pros

  • Tailored support for children and adults
  • Play and interaction-based autism support
  • Workshops and training for parents and educators
  • Teletherapy available when suitable

Cons

  • Teletherapy may not suit every client
  • Some strategies call for follow-up at home or school

Excellent Communication and Regular Therapy Progress

A couple of years ago, when we started the speech therapy journey for our daughter, we had a less than stellar experience with Auckland Speech Therapy (AST). Once brought to our attention, AST went above and beyond to rectify the situation. Last year, when we decided to proceed with regular therapy, we went back to AST. We have had a therapist named Jumi working with our daughter this past year. Her communication with us has been excellent.

Warm, Dedicated, and Fun Lessons

The speech therapist is warm and friendly. Our 5-year-old boy liked her immediately. She makes the lessons interesting, and some are fun. The dedication she shows is wonderful. We are very pleased with the progress made.

3. Finding Voices

Website

Address: Multiple locations including Mt Roskill, Mount Albert, the North Shore / Rosedale, and Silverdale

Contact: 022 377 9836 | [email protected]

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 AM – 6 PM; Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM

Finding Voices brings speech therapy, literacy support and occupational therapy under one roof, which is handy when a child’s needs don’t fit one tidy box.

Its therapists build plans around each child’s strengths and goals, with families involved along the way.

Food School takes a playful approach to picky eating, food refusal and tricky textures. Children can attend individual or group sessions, while parents can get coaching for mealtimes at home.

I like the choice of clinic appointments, school or home visits, and teletherapy across Auckland. Their structured Social Hangouts give children and young adults a chance to practise communication with peers, without making every conversation feel like a test.

The main budget catch is the assessment fee: speech-language assessment costs $190, or $400 if you need a written report. If that report would be useful for school or another provider, it’s worth deciding before you book.

Pros

  • Speech therapy, literacy support and occupational therapy in one practice
  • Food School offers individual sessions, groups and parent coaching
  • Clinic, school, home and teletherapy options
  • Social Hangouts let children practise communication with peers

Cons

  • A speech-language assessment with a written report costs $400, compared with $190 without one.

Compassionate, Skilled, and Child-Led Care

Finding Voices has supported our autistic son for the past 3.5 years, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Megan’s patience, expertise, and genuine care have made an incredible difference to all our lives, not just my son — she has truly become part of our family. We have also worked with OTs through Finding Voices/Balance who are incredible. To anyone looking for a compassionate and skilled speech therapist who is truly child-led- look no further.

Wonderful Experience Preparing for School

We have had the most wonderful experience working with Lauren at Finding Voices. She has helped my son so much with his speech development to prepare him for a successful start to school. He has absolutely loved his lessons, as Lauren has always provided such a fun, nurturing & caring environment for him. We are so grateful for the help & support we have received in our lessons, and we are so grateful to have come away with wonderful tricks & tips to use with our younger children in the future too. 🙂

4. Speech4all

speech4all

Website

Address: 51 Symonds Street, Onehunga

Contact: 021 0692 506

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM

Speech4all works with children and teens on everything from speech sounds to complex communication needs.

Its small team can meet families in the Onehunga clinic, at home or school, or online, which makes fitting therapy around the week a little less theatrical.

Director Samantha Russell has experience with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), including systems that help children express themselves in different ways.

The team offers workshops for parents and professionals, so useful strategies can travel beyond the therapy room.

I like that Speech4all can work alongside teachers, psychologists and other professionals involved in a child’s care. Its Chit-Chat4all groups give young people a structured chance to practise social skills with peers.

Speech4all focuses on Central Auckland, so families farther west or on the North Shore should check whether an in-person visit reaches their suburb.

Its weekday hours also end at 5 PM, which may be tricky if you need an evening appointment.

Pros

  • Clinic, home, school and online therapy options
  • Director has experience with AAC for complex communication needs
  • Workshops for parents and professionals
  • Chit-Chat4All groups offer social skills practice with peers

Cons

  • Central Auckland focus means families farther away should check in-person visit availability
  • Weekday hours end at 5 PM, with no  evening appointments

Remarkable Progress in Speech Clarity

We are incredibly grateful for the support our daughter has received from her speech and language therapist, Samantha. ❤️She has made remarkable progress in both her speech clarity and confidence. The sessions are always engaging, supportive, and tailored to her needs. The therapist’s patience, professionalism, and genuine care have made a real difference in our daughter’s development. We highly recommend her services to any family seeking speech and language support.

Amazing Play-Based Speech Development Support

Sam has been amazing in helping our boy with his speech development. We have been working with her for maybe a year now. She is so kind & patient and my son loves when she comes to visit. She really focuses on his development through play and has given us such great advice that we have seen a huge increase in his speech development. He’s gone from saying fewer than 10 words a year ago to now being able to have full conversations with us, tell us what he wants and need & us to understand him.

5. The Speech Room

the-speech-room

Website

Address: A9/18 & C4/18 Oteha Valley Road Extension, Albany

Contact: 09 416 9192 | 021 960 479 | [email protected]

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 AM – 5:30 PM

The Speech Room pairs speech therapy with occupational therapy through its partner clinic, The Move Room. That’s handy when a child’s needs refuse to stay in one neat category.

Its therapists support children and young adults with speech, language and stuttering concerns. I like that they develop home programmes and resources, so a useful new skill has somewhere to go after the session.

The team offers free speech and language screening days for Auckland preschools and schools. Director Caroline uses New Zealand Sign Language in her daily life, though families seeking NZSL teaching should ask about that separately.

The Albany clinic is open on weekdays until 5:30 PM, though, which may be awkward if you need a later appointment.

In the Bay of Plenty, the service is also based around school and home visits, so families wanting a clinic appointment would need to check their options.

Pros

  • Speech and occupational therapy available through partner clinics
  • Support for speech, language and stuttering concerns
  • Home programmes and resources help families practise between sessions
  • Free screening days for Auckland preschools and schools

Cons

  • Albany clinic closes at 5:30 PM on weekdays
  • Bay of Plenty service is based on school and home visits, rather than a local clinic appointment

Life-Changing Therapy for the Whole Family

Caroline & the team at The Speech Room have been life-changing. The professional and caring therapy provided supported my daughter through communicating using NZSL, AAC whilst simultaneously working on speech sounds and vocabulary. Caroline supports not only the child, but the whole whānau with tools to help in other areas of life. The therapy is always being adjusted to meet the client where they’re at, whilst also looking towards future language needs.

Without The Speech Room, my daughter would have started school without intelligible speech, severely limiting her ability to connect with peers. Highly recommend
