Have you ever tried to read a road sign only to find yourself squinting like you’re trying to solve a complex math problem? That used to be me.
One day, I was confidently driving around, completely oblivious to the fact that I was interpreting blurry blobs as street names. It wasn’t until I embarrassingly took the wrong turn—into someone’s driveway—that I realised I needed glasses.
So, if you’re already squinting all the time, it might be time to visit an optometrist.
Fortunately, Auckland is home to some exceptional optometrists. I had some help from the rest of the Auckland team in checking out the top optometrists in the city. Here’s who made it onto our list.
How much does it cost to visit an optometrist in Auckland? The cost to visit an optometrist depends on the type of service you need. A basic eye exam, for instance, costs around 60 NZD. The actual price will still depend on the optometrist’s personal rate. |

The optometrist Angeline was absolutely lovely
I recently visited Gates Eyewear for the first time in the hopes they may be able to help me with a pair of glasses I had purchased from another large chain retailer. The optometrist Angeline was absolutely lovely and made the whole process very easy. Lee was also able to remedy my glasses and replace the lenses to suit my prescription on site, making the whole process seamless. I have never seen such an amazing and wide range of frames anywhere else either, I imagine there is truely something for everyones style at Gates. I will definitely be purchasing my next pair from them.

They are the most comfortable frames I have ever purchased
“I am extremely happy to provide a review for Michael Holmes Premium Eyewear. Funnily enough, we walked into their shop whilst looking for another provider. Needless to say, we went no further. After Louise told us the story of this wonderful and committed family business, we were hooked. It was in the same appointment that my frames were selected, an eye test was done by Michael and my glasses were manufactured ahead of the promised time. The whole experience including fitting with Tiffany was a real joy. I can’t speak more highly of the whole team! I love my Oliver Goldsmith frames. They are the most comfortable frames I have ever purchased and the blue inset gives them a really nice ‘zing’ which helps when you hit my age!”

These new glasses are comfortable and cool – which has given the confidence to wear them
“Apologies this should have been posted over a year ago – I had a wonderful experience getting my glasses made at Parker & Co early last year. The staff working here are truly exceptional with their customer service and technical experience. I was particularly grateful with Lynn who helped me to choose the perfect pair of glasses (after an initial pair I chose which came out very thick and heavy – due to my high power). Lynn was very patient and professional and offered to remake the glasses for me and recommended me with some good options that are suitable for my power. she then went through the extra mile to get the style I wanted from US and a few weeks later I had the perfect pair of glasses which I’m still wearing today! As I have really high power I have always felt embarrassed wearing my glasses (except when I’m at home), but these new glasses are comfortable and cool – which has given the confidence to wear them a lot more outside of my house. Thank you so much Lynn for your professional and exceptional service! I will recommended Parker and co to anyone who’s looking to get some new glasses – the team here is highly professional and they know what they are doing!”

I always find many frames I love
“I have bought a few pairs of sunglasses from Parker & Co over the years and this time I needed to buy prescription glasses. I always find many frames I love and with the help and enthusiasm of all the staff, they help you find a frame you would never consider but suits you perfectly. They are always super friendly and I always enjoy my shopping experience there. They have also replaced two pairs of scratched lenses of my husband’s persol and moscot sunglasses and he was very happy with the result. Highly recommended.”

6. Mortimer Hirst Optometrist

Address: 9 High Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010, New Zealand
Contact Details: +6493798950
Operating Hours: +6493798950
If you’re looking for comprehensive eye exams, stylish eyewear, or specialised services like orthokeratology and myopia control, Mortimer Hirst might be the place for you.
Their optometrists cover a range of services, including eye examinations, visual screening, and children’s vision. They also provide specialised care such as post-surgery treatment, dry eye therapy, and ophthalmology co-management.
Their speciality, though, is orthokeratology, a non-surgical method that uses specially designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea. It’s a great alternative for those who are squeamish about surgery but want clear vision without glasses.
Several customers we spoke to also raved about how their contacts aren’t your run-of-the-mill contacts. They’ve helped slow down the progression of myopia and contribute to long-term eye health.
Still, others mentioned that the prices for eye exams and speciality treatments tend to be on the higher side. Another aspect that some people find less favourable is the limited selection of eyewear in-store.
Pros
- Comprehensive eye exams
- Orthokeratology
- Personalized client care
- Experienced optometrists
Cons
- Higher prices
- Limited eyewear selection in-store

Couldn’t have asked for better service
“I couldn’t have asked for better service, everyone is so nice at Mortimer Hirst, their service is fantastic. My teen loves her new glasses, the frames suit her face and personality, plus they’re great quality. Doctor Aki also specializes in keratoconus, which is an added bonus due to my daughter’s eye condition, and the main reason why I chose to take her there. P.S. I appreciate the little bag of extras they gave her. It was a lovely touch.”
