After a rather unpleasant experience with a lukewarm paper cup and an awkward request to provide a sample, I decided enough was enough.
I thought there had to be a better way to care for myself without feeling like I was starring in a low-budget medical drama.
So, I recruited the rest of the Auckland Magazine writing team to help me find places that offer good health screenings. We’ve found places worth your time—and your hard-earned Kiwi dollars.

How much does it cost to get a health screening in Auckland?

Well for Life’s premier medical screening lasts around two hours, during which you will consult both a doctor and an exercise physiologist. We think this is a clever combination.
We like that they go beyond basic questionnaires to examine sleep, stress, and relationships to get a holistic picture. The medical exam is comprehensive, from heart and lungs to skin and muscles.
For a deeper body composition analysis, measurements go beyond the usual height, weight, and BMI to include body fat and waist-hip ratio.
Blood tests are extensive. They cover everything from basic counts to liver and kidney tests, cholesterol tests, and specific markers like PSA and ferritin.
They even include cardio risk assessment and ECGs at rest and during exercise. The screening concludes with a detailed report, personalized advice, and specialist referrals if needed.
Their 30-minute health check with an exercise physiologist focuses on lifestyle for a faster option. It covers key measurements, musculoskeletal health, nutrition review, and a tailored exercise plan.
The downside is that their popularity can sometimes lead to longer wait times or overworked staff.

Tend stands out because they’re a “digital-first” general practitioner (GP) service provider. They have an app that allows you to book appointments, see doctors online, get repeat prescriptions, and even check your lab results.
We also admire their solid variety of screenings, which cover key health areas for both men and women. Prostate screenings are straightforward and discreet for men, and cervical screenings are provided for women.
Breast and bowel screenings are also part of their preventative health offerings.
We also love their Healthy Heart Check. This screening focuses on cardiovascular health, examines risk factors, and helps you understand your heart health. Many have told us they found it informative and reassuring.
We also appreciate that they have physical clinics where you can see someone in person.
That said, the customer service at these clinics is not the best. Patients have told us the staff was dismissive and not attentive to them.
Clean medical center
“Went there for a general medical examination, the medical center was pretty clean. I don’t know the receptionist’s name, but he was so passionate about his job even at 8am, which cheered me up quite much in that drizzly, cloudy and windy morning, keep it up pal! The nurse and the doctor were all friendly and gentle during the examination. Overall, my experience with Tend was nice.”

Best GP experience ever
“This is the best GP experience I’ve had ever.ive recently moved from the UK and Tend Symonds street was super close to me so I booked in, everything from registering to getting an appointment and then a prescription was super smooth and speedy, the receptionists were very helpful with me enrolling, the nurse was super friendly and Dr Ryan was very professional and helpful! I was dubious given the star rating but I honestly now can’t understand why it has that rating, 5 stars from me thank you! My partner will now also be enrolling :)”

We love that The Doctors Quay Med’s “Well Person Medical Check” is thorough and efficient, cutting out unnecessary frills.
Their structured approach is a key strength. Getting blood tests done beforehand is brilliant, allowing you to focus on discussing the results with the nurse and doctor during your appointment.
The medical check is well-organized too. It starts with a nurse taking baseline measurements like height, weight, blood pressure, and oxygen rate—all done efficiently to set up the doctor’s consultation.
Next, you see the doctor for a primary health check and cardiovascular risk assessment. People we spoke to admired that doctors took the time to explain their cardiovascular risk and offer advice.
The option to add an ECG and hearing test is a good touch, offering customization for those wanting a more complete picture. Choosing your doctor is also a bonus for patient control.
However, the reception experience wasn’t smooth. While the medical staff was professional, the receptionist occasionally seemed abrupt. Their curt tone and clipped responses made many feel unwelcomed, which we think is a minor downside.
Great online booking system
“I have been going to this clinic for 6 or 7 years and have not have a bad experience having seen several of the doctors and nurses. Once registered as a patient the cost for a 15 minute appointment seems relatively low. I like the online booking system. I’ve seldom had to wait long at reception, provided I turn up on time myself. Having a pharmacy across the hallway is convenient. Parking is generally OK plus major train and bus lines close by. Covid did seem to make things a bit more difficult for the practice.”

Manages the booking system very well
“We joined this clinic about 8yrs ago, we used to live and work in the city area but now moved to West Auckland. We are happy to stay in this clinic because the staff are friendly and helpful, and the doctors and nurses are professional and caring about their patients. I’m also working in a clinic, so I understand how difficult to book an appointment during the winter season, especially with the COVID pandemic. If you need a clinic that understands different backgrounds and speaks your language, Doctors 109 is a strong contender. We love how their immigration health screenings are their specialty, not just an add-on.
They have a streamlined process specifically for Immigration New Zealand’s requirements, which is a maze for most.
We value their comprehensive screenings. These cover all the expected bases—NZ eMedical setup, chest x-ray, nurse assessment, and doctor’s exam.
In addition, they efficiently submit everything to Immigration NZ within 48 hours. This speed and accuracy is impressive.
Beyond immigration, the company’s multilingual staff is a significant advantage. Speaking English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and other languages makes healthcare easier. This is especially beneficial for those more comfortable in their first language.
However, Doctors 109 can get busy, and longer waits are the trade-off for their specialist services and multilingual team.

5. Awanui Labs

If you like to be in control and get straight to the point, Awanui Lab’s approach will likely appeal to you. In fact, it’s their straightforward approach immediately grabbed our attention.
What sets them apart is their “Wellness Testing” service. Unlike places that offer comprehensive screening packages with doctor consultations, Awanui Labs’ service is more of a self-service model.
We like that, through their website, you can actually order and pay for a wide range of health tests yourself without needing to see a doctor beforehand.
In addition, many appreciate that they can choose precisely what they want to get checked, from basic blood counts and cholesterol levels to more specialized tests.
However, because they are so focused on self-service, the staff at the collection centers aren’t there to offer in-depth advice or guidance. They don’t assist with choosing tests or interpreting the results regarding your overall health.
