The other day, I was chatting with my old neighbor, and he asked me if I could help him search for a good dementia care facility. He had almost lost his breath from exhaustively searching for his glasses, only to find out they were on top of his head.
Lucky for us, Auckland isn’t just about stunning views and incredible coffee spots. It’s also home to some of the best dementia-care facilities around.
So, settle in as I take you through the top dementia care places in our lovely city. These are spots where your loved ones will be in good hands—preferably ones that can help them find their glasses, too!
How much do dementia care facilities cost in Auckland?
In Auckland, dementia care facilities typically cost between $5,000 and $10,000 per month.
This price range covers room and board, assistance with daily living activities, nursing care, and other necessary services for dementia patients.
Takanini Care Centre

Address: Takanini, 9/11 Taka Street
Phone: +6492981352
Business Hours:
- Monday to Sunday – 8 AM to 5 PM
Social Media: N/A
Takanini Care Centre stands out for its comprehensive range of services, specifically in dementia care. They cover four levels of care: rest home care, age-related hospital care, dementia care, and psychogeriatric care.
We liked the facility’s dedication to personalized care, evident in their specialized dementia programs tailored to each resident’s unique needs. The homes are well-equipped with 24/7 nursing staff and biweekly doctor visits.
We were even more impressed with the array of activities designed to keep residents engaged and stimulated. This includes ball games and bingo, which filled the common areas.
Haircut visits and other personal care services add a nice touch of comfort to their stay. However, such extensive care does come at a premium price.
Add to that, their lack of a robust social media presence makes outreach and communication somewhat limited. What’s keeping us positive is the good feedback from both previous clients and staff we have chatted with.

Edmund Hillary Retirement Village

Address: 221 Abbotts Way, Remuera

Business Hours:
- Open 24 hours
Edmund Hillary Retirement Village truly shines when it comes to providing dementia care services. This place is pretty expansive, boasting 195 care rooms.
Their services cover everything from rest home, hospital, and respite care to, of course, specialist dementia care. What we liked most were their dementia care rooms, which are spacious and come with a private ensuite and television.
They also provide personalized and focused care by having a primary caregiver dedicated to each resident. We were happy with the calming garden area included in their setup.
Their manager mentions that this vital space is designed for residents to unwind and for families to enjoy some quality outdoor time upon their visit. Furthermore, the facility is well organized, with engaging activities like workshops, exercise, and more.
However, all these do come with a hefty price tag, making them a bit steep for some budgets. In addition, we noticed that the place can get quite busy during peak times, affecting the availability of caregivers momentarily.
Vibrant community with diverse activities
“A lovely community of people, if you want to break down the typical image of a retirement home, come here. The only exception being the respite care wing, however in a sense, when loved ones are in conditions where their bodies can’t function as necessary it’s understandable that they will be limited. Always a function or other happening in the village, personal garden patches available.”
-Kayin Hey, Google Review
Lively retirement village
“Fabulous place for those who wish to live within a retirement village, it’s full of life and entertainment. Just go and Enquire at the receptionist about how to buy a place of residence here.”

CHT St Johns Care Home

Address: 54 Pah Road, Epsom
Phone: +6496256054
Business Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 9 AM to 5 PM
CHT St. Johns Care Home has a great reputation for delivering high-quality dementia care. The staff we spoke with were incredibly friendly and seemed genuinely committed to providing personalized care to each resident.
One of the standout features is their range of activities tailored specifically for those with dementia, such as board games, art and crafts, local library tours, as well as dance and music performances.
Their amenities are also pretty impressive, ranging from common areas to well-maintained outdoor spaces. We also loved their dedication to ongoing staff training to ensure the best dementia care practices.
Now, the costs are on the higher side. The good thing is that they offer a selected number of grants.
Another thing we’re iffy about is when it comes to gathering detailed information about their dementia care services. You have to request an “Information Pack” first, which is a bit of a hassle for some who just want quick info online.
Exceptional palliative care
“I’ve been very happy with my dad’s care who has been there for 9 mths so far.
Edit 1 yr later, my dad passed and the care in his final week of palliative care was excellent in suite 2.”
-Paul Tupou-Vea, Google Review
Attentive care and convenient parking
“They take great care of their patients.
Off street parking is available and very helpful on a busy road”

Capella House

Address: 39 Bolton Street, Blockhouse Bay
Phone: +6496279780
Business Hours:
- Monday to Sunday – 7 AM to 8 PM
Social Media: N/A
Capella House offers everything from secure dementia care to respite care, rest home care, and private hospital care. What we liked most were the two separate secure dementia care wings.
One of which is dedicated solely to male residents, providing that extra level of tailored care. Their large outdoor area and separate lounge areas provide a relaxing environment for residents to enjoy.
And let’s not forget the 24-hour nursing care, which is so important for peace of mind. We were even more impressed by how the staff participated in monthly training focused on all aspects of wellbeing.
Moreover, we also like the range of activities and amenities available here, like hairdresser visits, shopping trips, and private telephones. Although it’s worth noting that these come with some additional fees,.
However, they don’t have any social media presence other than their website for further referencing. And let’s be real: in today’s world, a little more online presence would be helpful.
Caring and dignified service
“A wonderful team of people who really understand how to look after their residents with care and dignity. Cannot recommend them highly enough.”
-Bobby Dempsey, Google Review
Outstanding care and lively atmosphere
“Best treatment of our beautiful mother, fantastic entertainment for the residents, genuine and lovely little dog, you would be very blessed to get into this facility. Awesome!”

Briargate Dementia Care

Business Hours:
- Open 24 hours
Social Media: N/A
Briargate Dementia Care offers a diverse range of care options. This includes dementia care, daycare, respite care, and even nutrition and stamina care.
What we liked most was the variety of activities they organize for residents. This ranges from Zumba and live music to balloon therapy, quizzes, and newspaper reading.
Even better, family and friends are encouraged to join in, which we felt was a pretty special touch. Speaking of which, one family we were able to contact said they’re glad to receive constant updates from the facility.
Furthermore, we were happy with the outings they planned too, like going to the shops, parks, beaches, museums, or local sights.
What’s more, the manager told us that their staff go through continuous training, seminars, and workshops. This really reassured us about the quality of care residents receive.
However, we’re just a bit iffy about the fact that they don’t have any social media presence besides their website. This might make it a bit harder to cross-reference or connect with them online.
Friendly and caring community
“My mother has only been part of the Briargate community for a few months but she has settled well and attends happily twice a week at this stage. Everyone is so friendly and caring. She feels understood and they make every day a happy day. I am so pleased we found Briargate.”
-Linda and Peter Padoa, Google Review
