Everybody loves a good Café – after all they give us coffee to fuel us in the mornings and fill our bellies with delicious food. Auckland’s favourite suburb Grey Lynn has plenty of eateries to make you feel right at home. With so many to choose from, we’ve put together a few of our faves… (you can thank us later)
Grey Lynn’s miniature eatery Honey Bones may be small, but it’s packed with plenty of tasty treats. Right in the heart of the West Lynn shops it serves up epic dishes to kickstart your mornings. Whether you’re after a morning coffee to-go or a catch-up brunch with friends, Honey Bones caters for all. Try their buckwheat porridge served with black doris plum, berries, chia, and coconut milk or dig into their Turkish poached eggs. This adorable little venue is sure to be your new Grey Lynn hangout.
Bread & Butter serve a lot more than their name suggests. Grey Lynn’s big sister to Ponsonby’s Little Bread & Butter is sticking to its roots and selling delicious home-made bread amongst a mouth-watering breakfast and lunch menu. Their Breakfast of Champignons is the true champion here, made up of mixed mushrooms in a creamy balsamic sauce, bacon, watercress, poached egg & pesto all served on a brioche bun. With breakfast available until 3pm, there is no excuse not to drop by this hearty organic eatery.
Calling all coffee lovers- Kokako Café is going to be your new best bud. Using their own beans, this popular Grey Lynn caf will cater to all your coffee needs, with a range of options including espresso, filter and a good old flat white. If coffee is not your drink of choice, then never fear as there are plenty of refreshing smoothies to choose from. The a la carte menu will win you over at first glance, with their Matcha Waffle dish, paired with strawberry compote, coconut cream and honeycomb and maple syrup. Sold right? If you haven’t already then head to this well-known bistro, even if it is to check out their awesome décor.
At the heart of Grey Lynn is the Richmond Road Café, with a spacious deck and beautifully presented plates from the all-day menu, you’ll be spoilt for choice. This beloved café welcomes all, if you like to start off the day with something sweet and tasty then definitely try the Pancakes served with apple, mascarpone and lemon balm syrup. Is savoury your thing? Then opt for the goat cheese omelette – it’s egg-cellent! The best part of Richmond road café is they don’t follow by the rules – if you want a wagyu burger for breakfast then go right ahead, no body is judging at this friendly neighbourhood joint.
This family-owned café adds something different to Grey Lynn’s food scene. It not only serves a great cup of coffee but get this… they offer a delicious Turkish eating experience. While eggs on toast are great, a home-made Borek is way better! This unique coffee spot speciality is made from savoury pastry scrolls stuffed with whatever takes your fancy. Why not try the beef mince Borek, filled to the brim with quality beef mince, sautéed onions, pine nuts and blackcurrants or the vegetarian option made with potato, mozzarella and spring onion? They also serve up some healthy and hearty traditional Turkish salads with homemade hummus or babaganush. So, if you feel like trying something new on a Saturday morning then stroll on down to Coffee & Durum.
