It’s easy to get caught up in our busy 9-5 office routine – forgetting the beautiful destinations and incredible adventures right in our own backyards, just waiting to be discovered.

2017 Kiwibank Local Hero Robert Bruce set up the social enterprise ‘Got To Get Out’ when he realised he wasn’t getting outdoors enough, and decided he wanted to inspire as many people as possible to get outdoors, be active, see the world and make new friends.

The adventure group has experienced rapid growth since it was established in 2015. The group has over five thousand followers – and Robert has personally hosted or organised over 30 adventures all around New Zealand, often for people who haven’t gotten outdoors before (or for a long time).

Robert has always had an entrepreneurial streak – he set up his first business in 2006 after studying at AUT, operating out of his parents’ spare bedroom. He was just 21, but his marketing agency took off, and he was soon managing big events, sponsorships and tours and employed thousands of promotional staff for major brands throughout NZ. His company was ranked in the Deloitte Fast 50 as one of the fastest growing companies in New Zealand.

In 2014, his agency was purchased by a global PR firm, but he stayed on board, managing major brand activation campaigns across Australasia. Robert was working incredibly hard, and it started to take a toll on his health.

“Running that agency was an unsustainable lifestyle, and I had to make a change. Something had to give. So, I started getting out more often. I found a love for hiking, and got out as often as I could, discovering parts of my country that I never even knew existed. By purely taking care of myself better – being more active, going to the gym and eating better, I lost around 30kg. It was life changing.”

When his ‘time was up’ with the business, Robert booked a trip to hike to Mt Everest Base Camp – so he travelled to Nepal.

It was as he trekked through the Himalayas to Everest Base Camp that Robert first got his big idea.

Surrounded by the world’s tallest mountains, he felt an overwhelming sense of freedom and inspiration – and a need to share it.

“It was at around 5,000m above sea level trekking through the Himalayas where I decided that my purpose was to help people to have amazing experiences, like the one I was having – and to change their lives for the better in the process,” says Robert.

So, Got To Get Out was born, with Everest in the background.

Fast forward two years, and Robert has inspired hundreds of people to get outdoors – from kayaking to Rangitoto Island, to hiking the Tongariro Crossing and Climbing Mount Pirongia, ‘GTGO’ers’ have seen incredible parts of New Zealand and formed a tight community, where they share ideas, carpool, and have made friends for life through their shared experiences.

The adventure group has taken Robert as far as South East Asia, and more recently he returned to the place where it all started – except this time, he had a whole group of people with him to watch the sun rise from Everest Base Camp on New Years Day, 2017.
