Education Changemakers are excited to announce registrations of interest for

IDEAlab - Technology edition

Auckland 2019

"How can we better utilise technology to accelerate student learning?’

FACILITATORS Dave Faulkner (CEO, Co-Founder) + Arnika Macphail, MoE Accredited Facilitator (Director, NZ)

The IDEAlab is tailor made to help schools and leaders increase the innovation skills in their school communities, whilst also creating real world solutions to education challenges and opportunities. Teachers and education leaders in the course work directly on an identified education challenge or opportunity and, across two workshops split over several months, are equipped with world class innovation skills with this learning grounded in practical action.

This is what happens in the IDEAlab:

SELECTION AND PROGRAM PREPARATION: Identifying the right design challenges

The most important setup for this program is the identification of the most appropriate education opportunities or challenges for your unique context, and we are able to work closely with you to identify these. We can also provide assistance with the marketing of this opportunity, and selection of appropriate participants for the program, including liaison with school principals and regional leaders and ongoing communication regarding logistics and scheduling. This IDEAlab is specific to understanding how technology improves learning outcomes for our students. PBTech have kindly offered to provide a space, resources and technology to trial for this program.

WORKSHOP ONE: Learning design thinking tools relevant to education

In this one day workshop, participants are quickly introduced to education design thinking before spending time strategically analyzing the challenges and opportunities that are being focused on in the workshop. With the support of the EC team, participants then rapidly ideate solutions in line with this improved strategic understanding, before stepping into prototyping their innovations for peer feedback. They leave this first day equipped with a tool-kit of design thinking techniques specific to education, as well as a real product or program that they will then aim to test in a safe and controlled environment with students back in their unique education setting.

Throughout the three months of the program, all participants can engage with unlimited strategy and coaching meetings with our lead facilitators through personalised email, phone calls and video conferences. During these meetings, participants access further learning, receive advice on strategic decisions that need to be made and receive encouragement on their specific change initiatives.Overview

BETWEEN WORKSHOP ONE AND TWO: Testing the ideas in the realities of school

During the one to three month period between workshops, participants are back in their unique education settings testing their innovations to measure their effect size on student learning. They are encouraged to pivot their ideas during this time, drawing on the innovation skills they have learned to keep striving towards discovering the most appropriate concepts.

Participants return with the results from their prototypes and receive support to either pivot a concept that has not worked as they expected or refine one that has. They will also be skilled up with the tools they need to see their solution achieve ongoing change for students, scale beyond the original site and be sustainably led by others. This blend of instructional and transformational leadership skills provide approaches that the participants can draw on as they move forward in their education careers.

Our team work closely to monitor not only the changes that takes place professionally and personally in the participants, but also the impact on the learning outcomes of students that are influenced by their change projects. We provide reporting to the local and regional education offices to provide feedback on the program and help to spread best practice within and across schools. Impacts are shared through written reports which include photos after each workshop.
