Imagine being able to live in a city where some of the most beautiful beaches are just a hop, skip and a jump away, oh wait… we do! Auckland is surrounded by a variety of incredible beaches that are bound to take your breath away. Think black sand, white sand, any type of sand you can imagine, Auckland’s got it! So, whether you’re after a dip in the ocean, a picnic on the beach or a good old surf sesh, Auckland’s beaches will certainly deliver. With so many beaches to choose from, we’ve put together some of our fave’s…

Piha beach - West Auckland

For all you surfers out there, Piha is the perfect spot to ride the waves with its huge swells. Part of the scenic west coast, Piha is certainly a tourist attraction, but don’t let that phase you as Piha’s long stretches of black sand allows surfers, sightseers, and beach goers to unite. The picturesque black-sand plains is a great place for budding photographers, while the Lion Rock gives you the ultimate insta worthy shot of Piha from above. Head out west to visit one of Auckland’s best renowned beaches.

Bethells beach - West Auckland

Another west coast gem, Bethells Beach is the perfect secluded getaway. It’s amazing to think that this incredible surfers paradise is less than an hour’s drive from the CBD. With a bundle of free activities like hiking, fishing, swimming and surfing, boredom is certainly not on the cards. Now, if you’re idea of the perfect day is to relax with your nose buried in a book rather than the sand then Bethells Beach is definitely for you, the beach is slightly tucked away so there are plenty of spaces to hide.

Mission Bay beach - Central Auckland

Now if an hour’s drive still sounds a bit too far for you to travel, then never fear as some of Auckland’s most beautiful beaches are right on your doorstep. Take Mission Bay for instance, this beautiful golden sand beach is very welcoming, it’s the perfect picnic location for both families and friends. With its views of Rangitoto and a short walk to Saint Helliers beach, you’ve got plenty of options to explore. If beach hopping isn’t for you then you can explore the neighbouring bars and restaurants as Mission Bay is home to a variety of eateries, including some of the tastiest ice cream - and what’s better than ice cream on a hot summer’s day!

Muriwai - West Auckland

Muriwai is another beautiful black sand beach that’s always on our list! Head out west to find this beauty, where you can take in the sights (with a coastline stretching 60 kilometres), sandboard down the dunes, surf the huge rips or go take a look at the gannet colony from August - March. But remember the west is wild - so be careful, although surf lifeguards are always on patrol at peak times! Muriwai is the ultimate place to clear the cobwebs and really be at one with nature.

Point chev beach - Central Auckland

If it’s a bit of peace and quiet you’re after, then Point Chevalier is the beach for you. Although it’s pretty central, the golden sand beach is actually quite quiet and is a great spot for a sunday stroll. Pack a picnic and bring the entire family, with a playground nearby, you can take in the views as your children play. Unlike the west coach beaches, the water is calm, so is safe for swimming. The best part is, Point Chev beach is dog friendly, so when we say bring the entire family, we mean your doggo’s too!

Cheltenham Beach - North Auckland

Relax and take in the fresh air as you explore Devonports stunning Cheltenham beach. Similar to Takapuna beach, but without the crowds of people, the picturesque beach is home to panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf. With calm water, it’s the perfect spot for a dip, or work up an appetite with a kayak adventure. After all that hard work, treat yourself to some fish ‘n’ chips on the beach and watch as the sunsets over Rangitoto. Just a short walk from the ferry terminal, there is no excuse to not visit this little gem!
